Part II Reading Comprehension (40%)

Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Questions 31 to 50 are based on the following passage.

Passage 1

In 1975 a doctor in Singapore noticed that hospitals were treating an unusual number of influenza-like cases. Influenza is sometimes called “flu" or a “bad cold". He took samples from the throats of patients and in his hospital was able to find the virus of this influenza.

There are three main types of the influenza virus(病毒). The most important of these are type A and B, each of them having several subgroups. With the instruments at the hospital the doctor recognized that the outbreak was due to a virus in group A, but he did not know the subgroup. Then he reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization in Geneva. W.H.O. published the

important news alongside reports of a similar outbreak in Hong Kong, where about 15~20% of the population had become ill.

As soon as the London doctors receive the package of throat samples, doctors began the standard tests. They found that by reproducing itself with very high speed, the virus had grown more than a million times within two days. Continuing their careful tests, the doctors checked the effect of drugs against all the known subgroups of virus type A. None of them gave any protection. This, then, was something new, a new influenza virus, against which the people of the world had no help whatever. Having found the virus they were working with, the two doctors now dropped it into the noses of some specially selected animals, which get influenza much as human beings do. In a short time the usual signs of the disease appeared. These experiments proved that the new virus was easy to catch, but that it was not a killer. Scientists, like the general public, call it simply Asian flu.

The first discovery of the virus, however, was made in China before the disease had appeared in other countries. Various reports showed that the influenza outbreak started in China, probably in February of 1957. By the middle of March it had spread all over China. The virus was found by Chinese doctors early in March. But China is not a member of the World Health Organization and therefore does not report outbreaks of disease to it. Not until two months later, when travelers carried the virus into Hong Kong, from where it spread to Singapore, did the news of the outbreak reach the rest of the world. By this time it was started on its way around the world.

31. As the doctor in Singapore found the disease, he .

A. set his patients apart from others

B. reported the outbreak to Geneva

C. was keen on naming the disease

D. found the subgroup of virus

32. The truth about the virus in this passage was that it .

A. was a weak type

B. was a derivation from others

C. could reproduce with high speed

D. had been stored in a fridge

33. Which statement is TRUE about the influenza according to the passage?

A. It could only be spread among children

B. It had been identified many years before.

C. There were no effective drugs for it.

D. Animals were alert to this disease

34. According to the experiment on animals, we can find that .

A. the flu was easy to cause death to animals

B. the flu has a more serious effect on animals

C. there was no significant sign of the flu

D. the flu was serious but not deadly

Passage 2

Do you like to eat out? Do you like to eat quickly? Do you like inexpensive food? Some people go to fast-food restaurants for these reasons. In the past, people usually went to diners(路边小餐馆)for these reason. In fact, many people in the States still go to diners today for the same reasons.

A man named Walter Scott had the first “diner” in 1872. It wasn’t really a diner. It was only a food cart. People on the street walked up to the cart to buy food. These carts served late-night workers who wanted a cup of coffee and a late-night meal. The meal was a sandwich or boiled eggs. In 1887, Samuel Jones built the first diner big enough to allow the customers to come inside. However, they did not sit down. Later, people built diners with counters and benches, and people sat down while they ate.

Before long, many diners stayed open around the clock. In other words, people were able to eat in a diner at any time. Diners changed in other ways, too. The original menu of sandwiches and coffee became bigger. It included soup, favorite dishes, and a breakfast menu. In addition, diners soon became permanent buildings. They were no longer carts on wheels.

Diners today look similar to the diners of the early 1900s. They are usually buildings with large windows. Inside, the diners have shining counters, tables and chairs. People can eat all three meals in a modern diner.

Today, many people eat in fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s and Burger King. However, the diner remains an American tradition, and thousands of people still enjoy eating there. It was popular a century ago, and it is still popular today.

Passage 3

The people who lived in Rome 2000 years ago were already complaining about the noise in their city. They couldn’t sleep, they said, with all that traffic in the streets. For us it has become a real danger. We know that the sounds of an average city are loud enough to cause serious damage to the inhabitants’ hearing in the United States, one person out of twenty has suffered some hearing loss. All over the world the situation is getting worse all the time since noise levels increase with the increases in population.

It has also increased greatly in the 20th century with the development of machines. We live in places surrounded by loud planes, trucks motorcycles(摩托车), buses, electric tools, radios,

pneumatic drills (风钻)---all of which roar (吼叫)day and night up to levels of 90 or 100 decibels. The decibel is the unit used to measure the loudness of sound. A normal conversation reaches 55 decibels; thunder roars at 70 decibels; a jet plane goes to 100 decibels and more. An ordinary subway train, approaching the station, can be twice as loud as the loudest jet. The average discotheque (迪斯科舞厅)reaches levels around 118 decibels. At 120 decibels the ear stops hearing sound, and pain starts.

Unfortunately, the human ear does not judge clearly the degree of loudness of a noise. A sound, which is felt twice as loud, is in fact ten times louder. Since we cannot measure the increase or decrease of noise, we never know to what danger we are exposed.

However, it is not only our hearing that is threatened. It has been proven that loud noises, over a period of time, cause loss of sleep, anger, and many mental and physical problems. Such problems have been observed among factory workers, prisoners in large prisons, and people who drive heavy trucks, operate pneumatic drills, or go frequently to rock-and-roll (摇滚)concerts.

41. Two thousand years ago the Romans complained about the noise made by _____.

A. thunder roars

B. a jet plane

C. the traffic in the streets

D. the population increase

42. The noise people are experiencing now is _____ than that the Romans experienced.

A. even worse

B. more favourite

C. Less dangerous

D. not louder

43. The unit we use to measure the loudness of sound is _____.

A. discotheque

B. decibel

C. pneumatic drill

D. loudspeaker

44. The ear cannot hear the sound higher than _____.

A. 100 decibels

B. 118 decibels

C. 70 decibels

D. 120 decibels

45. What does the author think of the fact that the human ear does not judge clearly the degree of

loudness of a noise? _____.

A. It is good

B. It is helpful

C. It is fortunate

D. It is unfortunate

Passage 4

The murder took place around ten o'clock p.m. on June 10. Thirty-two people watched Kitty being killed right beneath their windows. She was their neighbor. Yet, none of the 32 helped her. Not even one called the police. Was this inhuman cruelty(狠心)? Was it lack of feeling for one's fellow man?

“Not so,”say scientists Dr. Darley and Dr. Fatane. They've found the reasons why people don't act. According to them, a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice there is an emergency(紧急情况).

Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall onto the ground. Is he having a heart attack, or some other physical trouble? Or is he simply about to sleep off a drunk(醉酒)? So it's not always easy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency.

Second and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel himself responsible. He must feel that he must help.

The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They asked college students to come in to be “tested”. Some came alone, some with one or two others, and some in large groups. When they came in, either alone, in pairs, or in groups, a lady went into the next room. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of something falling and a cry for help. All of this had been pre-recorded on a tape-recorder.

Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped.

In other words, in a group, American often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn't. They do not feel any direct responsibility.

46. Why didn't the thirty-two people act to help Kitty according to the passage?

A. Because they were afraid to be killed.

B. Because they were cruel in their hearts.

C. Because they thought others would help.

D. Because they didn't notice the emergency.

47. Which of the following is an emergency?

A. Someone is falling onto the ground.

B. Someone is having a heart attack.

C. Someone is having a trouble.

D. Someone is sleeping off a drunk.

48. When a person notices an emergency, he must _____ before he acts to help.

A. feel himself responsible

B. call the police

C. hear a cry for help

D. be with a group

49. The result of the tests shows that _____.

A. the more people there are together, the more people will act to help

B. college students would be more likely to help than ordinary Americans

C. the more people there are together, the fewer people will act to help

D. none of the tested students acted to help

50. Americans don't _____ in a group.

A. notice an emergency

B. go through two steps before they act

C. depend on each other

D. feel direct responsibility
