In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719—but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy(识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the

authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad.

In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters —from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim—were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens' greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂)of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa.

How did Dickens get to the top? For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60, 000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It's partly true that Dickens' style. of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It's partly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it's also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible — and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one.

My First Marathon(马拉松)

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn?t do either well. He later informed me that I was" not athletic".The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn?t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line,my shoe laces (鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

At mile 3, I passed a sign:" GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was starving!

As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

8. A month before the marathon,the author_____.

A. was well trained

B. felt scared

C. made up his mind to run

D. lost hope

9.Why did the author mention the P.E.class in his 7th year?_____

A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher.

B. To amuse the readers with a funny story.

C. To show he was not talented in sports.

D. To share a precious memory.

10.How was the author?s first marathon?_____

A. He made it.

B. He quit halfway.

C. He got the first prize.

D. He walked to the end.

11.What does the story mainly tell us?_____

A. A man owes his success to his family support.

B. A winner is one with a great effort of will.

C. Failure is the mother of success.

D. One is never too old to learn.

D

Measles(麻疹),which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗).But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly.Already this year,115 measles cases have been reported in the USA,compared with 189 for all of last year.

The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high,as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called"herd immunity",which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can't be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn't work. But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in.When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger.

That's exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County,California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month,to Brooklyn,N.Y.,where a 17-year-old caused an outbreak last year

The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer.

Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加)of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten.Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免),sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine. Now,several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out.But no one

does enough to limit exemptions.

Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough.Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they'll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks.

12.The first two paragraphs suggest that ______ .

A. a small number of measles cases can start a dangerous trend

B. the outbreak of measles attracts the public attention

C. anti-vaccine movement has its medical reasons

D. information about measles spreads quickly

13.Herd immunity works well when ______ .

A. exemptions are allowed

B. several vaccines are used together

C. the whole neighborhood is involved in

D. new regulations are added to the state laws

14.What is the main reason for the comeback of measles?______

A. The overuse of vaccine.

B. The lack of medical care.

C. The features of measles itself.

D. The vaccine opt-outs of some people.

15.What is the purpose of the passage?______

A. To introduce the idea of exemption.

B. To discuss methods to cure measles.

C. To stress the importance of vaccination.

D. To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment.

Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral or just plain bad。

Today Dickens' greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon (名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa.

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead"

I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was" not athletic"可以推出作者没有运动天赋。故选C。

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished!" 故选A。

4.

Measles vaccine health

The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend。

表达为misinformation that is spreading quickly,是关于麻疹的错误消息。

根据文中第三段第一句herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in 可知需要群体中所有人参与才能形成群体免疫力,C项意为"整个社区都参与",符合文中题意。

根据文中第一段第二句 caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly 以及第六段第一句Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten。

D项中的An active mind与前面的keeps your mind
