Dear Pam,

Thanks for your message. I’m having a great time on my student exchange program.

When I first arrived in America, I was surprised by the honesty of my classmates. Over my first mo nth at school, I didn’t see or hear anyone cheating. I found two reasons for this.

First, if any student cheats, he or she will get punished. My school has a rule called the “Honor Code”. It asks students not to steal, lie or cheat. If someone goes against the code, he or she will have to leave the school. During my first year in the school, seven students left the school

because of cheating.

Second, American students don’t care about scores as much as Chinese students do. They know that colleges will look at their all-round abilities instead of only scores. So they have fewer reasons to cheat.

Middle school students in Louisville, US, would give the man a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR, 心肺复苏). It is a type of first aid. That is because they learn CPR in class.

Louisville started the CPR Anytime program a few months ago. The program teaches middle school students CPR with face and lung (肺部) dummies (仿制品) and DVDs in class. “We know CPR can help save people’s lives,” said Joseph Laskowski, who works for the program. “The more people can use CPR, the more injured people can get help. And we know that the best way to teach CPR skills to everyone is to build it into our school.”

Through the program, students learn and practice the CPR skills on a dummy while watching a DVD. Each student can also take back home a set of face and lung dummies so that they can use them to share CPR with family and friends.

Shawna Jackson is a 12-year-old student at Lassiter Middle School in Louisville. She said that she found CPR was very difficult the first time she tried it, but now she feels “it’s quite easy.” Jackson is very glad that she has learned this important skill for saving people’s lives. “If I’m somewhere and I see someone who is injured, I can help him or her until the ambulance arrives,” said Jackson.

Television is one of the greatest technological inventions of the twentieth century. A Scottish man called John Logie Baird invented it. Inventors in the USA and Europe were working on electronic television systems (系统) but Baird used a mechanical (机械的) system. In 1925, he was able to send the first black and white picture — of the head of a doll — from one end of his flat (公寓) to the other. He then used a local office boy, not the doll, and this teenager was the first person ever to appear on TV. Baird made the first television programmes for the BBC in 1929.
