Let’s Take a Rest for a While

It was a cloudy Sunday afternoon. I sat quietly in a classroom, but in a vague mood. When I raised my head up, my eyes were cast on a bare tree with few leaves left, waving in the chilly Autumn wind. This little sad scene was strongly reminiscent( 怀旧的)of my childhood.

I used to live with my grandmother who loved planting flowers and trees in the yard. In the

In reality, it’s the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair.

you and never make progress?

This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we can’t focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, a nd so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become … take immediate action. If you’re clear about where you want to go, th e rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.

A new study led by Colorado State University( CSU)and Wildlife Conservation Society showed that outdoor recreation activities in protected areas can do more harm than benefit in wildlife living in the area.

The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, showed that outdoor recreation activities, such as hiking, in protected areas can negatively affect wildlife by making nearby animals flee, taking time away from feeding and running out of their reserved energy.

“People generally assume that recreat ion activities are compatible with conservation goals for protected areas,” said Courtney Larson, a graduate student at CSU’ s Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology and lead author of the study, in a press release. “However, our review of t he evidence across wildlife species and habitat types worldwide suggests otherwise.”

For the study, the researchers analyzed 274 scientific articles that were published between

1981-2015. These articles discuss the potential effects of recreation on different animal species living across all geographical areas.

Among the reviewed scientific articles, the researchers observed more than 93 percent indicated at least one effect of recreation on animals living nearby．Out of those， about 59 percent were negative．Reptiles， amphibians and invertebrates（无脊椎动物） are at most risk of the negative effect of recreation activities. On the other hand，birds in the crow family and mammals in the rodent（啮齿目动物）family seem to benefit from recreation activities in protected areas. These benefits include increased abundance and reduced flight responses.

The most documented negative effect of recreation activities includes decrease in species diversity. The researchers also observed that the species negatively affected by recreation activity experience decreases survival, reproduction and abundance. These species may also experience behavioral and psychological disturbances, such as decrease in foraging(觅食)and increased stress.

With their findings, the researchers noted that there should be a clear distinction between recreation and conservation, and the combination of the two is not appropriate for all species, in all areas. The study also shows the importance of developing a science-based solution to avoid or reduce the negative effects of recreation activity, especially now that 94 percent of the protected areas around the world are open for nature-loving tourists.
