In the last month I focused on generally overviewing the work of <跨文化交际学概论>, Having gotten a fairly good idea of this course, I further consulted my English textbook and generally overviewed the content to clarify my observations.

Before I read the book <跨文化交际学概论>I just think that intercultural communication is a kind of communication between Two people from different countries, organizations or between countries, exchange and communication is the cross-cultural communication, exchanges with the two different regions of a country's culture is not cross-cultural communication. Because I think that since it is the 'cross' cultural differences between the two cultures is a great, very different cultural sources and cultural backgrounds, there is not the same course of development and evolution, the formation of two very different cultural connotations. For example, the plains of Mesopotamia and the Euphrates nurtured culture, culture nurtured by the Yellow River each have their own characteristics. With the development of economic development and progress of transport and means of communication, cross-cultural communication has become people's needs and the needs of economic globalization and "global village". And I know something about this book. The so-called cross-cultural communication, it’s about that people of different cultural backgrounds come together to share ideas, feelings and information happening. The English name of the cross-cultural communication, Intercultural Communication, early also known as Cross-cultural Communication. And I know something about the author. Working in the Beijing Foreign Studies University, the famous linguist Professor Hu Wenzhong engaged in the study of intercultural communication in the early 1980s, works quite good, has now edited the publication of many books of "Intercultural Studies", "cross-cultural and language communication.

In his book, The first viewpoint is that for cross-border, inter-racial, cross-national studies should not only be cross-cultural communication, including the content, and should be the first place. As for the different levels of regions, classes, class, occupation, gender, age differences should also be given attention. As for the only meaningful differences between individuals only as if they were groups of representatives. It’s said any communication between two people can called intercultural communication. It stress that The definition of culture and for discussion of the definition of culture can help us understand the nature and characteristics of the culture It gives me a new understanding of intercultural communication. The book told me intercultural include not only inter-national, inter-racial and inter-country but also different area, different age, different, different class, different job, different sex and so on.

My English textbook teach me more detail about intercultural communication, it let me know we humans cannot live in a culture-free situation, nor can we survive without communication. In today’s “shrinking” world, our communication behavior is extended from that within our own community to that among and between others. It let us students understand the basic concepts and theories of cross-cultural communication science, and apply these theoretical analysis, to solve the problem of values, awareness, expectations and interaction patterns in language learning, or contacts with people of different cultural groupsand conflict, to develop our cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity, improve their intercultural communicative competence and interpersonal communication skills.In my textbook I look at aspects of culture, and the relation ship between culture and communication. Through read that book I believe that I will improve my skills of communication.

At first I want to introduce the author of <跨文化交际>, Hu Wenzhong. Professor Hu

Wenzhong, who worked at Foreign Literature Institute, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), is the President of China English Language Education Association, President of China Association for Intercultural Communication and President of China University English Speaking Association. Moreover, he was the Academic Vice President of BFSU (1984-1990), the Director of Foreign Literature Research Institute, BFSU (1995-1999), the Chair of Advisory Board for Foreign Language Teaching for the Ministry of Education and the President of Australian Studies Association of China.

Compare these two books I prefer my textbook, I think it is more suit for me. These two books both have rich content. At first they both explain what cultural really is, then tech us how to communicate with other people. The former book is very thin but has a lot of definition of intercultural communication and just tell us in general.

But the text book is more detailed. It does have not only definition but also a lot of examples, the text book teach us how to communication with words first then it even teach us some nonverbal communication.

From this two books I find out that we can not control the skill of communication just in book, we need more practice. In our class we suppose teacher should give us more opportunity to let us speak, because of our classmates come from different part of our country, it’s a good condition to let us “do clutural”.

Table Manners As we know, people in China and western countries all pay lots of attention to good table manners.
