The 90-minute long game includes two goals, black and white balls, goalkeepers, and no hand use. This sport, of course, is soccer — or football as the majority of the rest of the world says. It’s confusing that some count ries call this sport “football” while Americans and a few other countries say “soccer”, but obviously the British are mostly to blame.

The name confusion is actually thanks to British universities in the early 1800s who tried standardizing various sports games that had different rules and regulations to differentiate(区分) between them.

Rugby, formerly known as “rugby football” or “rugger”, is a version of “football” where you can use your hands. Soccer, originally “association football” or “asoccer”, is the traditional version of “football” where people don’t use their hands. People in England started shortening the names by dropping the “association” part of the phrase as well as the “a” in “asoccer”.

Now comes the complex part: in 1869, Rutgers and Princeton colleges held the first traditional, recorded football game using a unique combination of rules from both rugby and soccer, creating what we know as “American football”.Thanks to the popularity of American football, soccer players in America stuck to “soccer” to help differentiate themselves.

If the nickname “soccer” stuck in Britain, and if Americans came up with a better nickname for American football, there would be much less confusion. So why did “football” become more popular than “soccer” in Engla nd anyway? Originally, American influence on Britain during World War II made “soccer” the popular term in England before the 1980s. Once the sport became more popular in America around that time, the British stopped using “soccer”.

Once upon a time, toys didn’t flash. They never needed new batteries. They just sat there doing nothing...until a child came along and unlocked the fun waiting in an ordinary marble(弹珠) or wooden building block.

But will future children want to play with such old-fashioned toys? Many experts hope so. The American Specialty Toy Retailing Association provides kids with toys that “focus on what the child can do, rather than what the toy can do.” Some toys help kids develop important skills. Too many special functions make play more about the toy and less about the child. In fact, electronic toys could actually slow down language development in babies, according to a 2016 study. The study found that parents spoke to their babies less when the child had a talking toy.

But none of this means that technology and toys shouldn’t mix. Digital toys offer totally new ways to play. Robotic toys may get kids to act as fellows. And augmented-reality toys combine video games with real life. Imaginary things can mix with reality. Or real things can become part of a virtual(虚拟) world. Play-Doh Touch, for example, allows kids to see creatures they’ve made out of Play-Doh and play with them in a mobile game.

Perhaps stacking(堆叠) virtual blocks or playing with virtual marbles could offer the same sorts of open-ended experiences as the real-world variety. Besides, blocks and marbles could change size, fly, or do any number of amazing things. And virtual toys could adjust themselves to a player’s age and developmental level. For example, as the child gets better at stacking, blocks could change, increasing the challenge.

Digital or virtual toys are most relevant today. Who knows if there will be a place for old-school wooden blocks?
