V. Reading Comprehension (40 points)

( A )

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people adversely. A person’s self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, having low self-esteem(尊重),are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.”Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleaded by compliments(恭维) because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a compliment with a statement like this one: ”You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.”It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient effort in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. For example, most people would like to be “A”students in every subject. It is not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have difficulty in some areas. People’s expectations of themselves must be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to a sense of inadequacy.

81.The topic of the first paragraph is that __________.

83. According to the writer, a person’s comfortable feelings always depend on ___________.

A) the reactions from others

B) his own self-awareness

C) all areas in his life

D) the way he behaves

84. Which of the following can NOT be used to describe a shy person?

A) He is likely to be inactive and yielding.

B) He has no confidence in himself.

C) He is unworthy of any praise.

D) He is over-sensitive to remarks about him

85. Which of the following is NOT included in the passage?

A)--Too much self-consciousness proved to be harmful to our personality.

A century ago, most families relied on income from agriculture. Today over half of all labor is in white ―collar occupations ―a category that includes doctors, lawyers, teachers, managers, and sales and clerical(文秘)workers. Employment in blue-collar work (assembly lines and construction are examples) and, especially, farming has declined over the years.

The most dramatic change in labor markets over the past few decades has been the surge(激增)of women into the labor force. In the 1950s,only one woman in three worked outside the home, more than half hold jobs today, and 44 percent of all workers are mothers with small children. Even more remarkable is the threefold increase in working mothers with small children.

Several theories have been advanced to explain these changes. A revolution of rising expectations about living standards propelled many women into the work force that might have been housewives in an early era.

Legal reforms and changing attitudes about women’s work roles have opened doors to careers that were previously closed. The flight from the worst types of household hard work was facilitated by such innovations as washers and dryers, microwave oven, and permapress(耐久压烫)clothing .Options to postpone children and control family size have been made available by cheap and effective birth control ,also increasing women’s labor force participation rates.

These changes have not occurred in a vacuum. The labor force participation rates of men fell slightly over this same period, partially because more young men are going to college, while mature men have typically been retiring at earlier ages.

86.According to the passage, more than fifty percent of the working people used to be__________

A)blue- collar workers

A)The relief of housework by virtue of wide use of electric appliances

B)Highly effective and generally acceptable methods of family planning

C)Legal support for and changed opinions about women’s work roles

D)The rise of modern living standards because of the introduction of automation

88.As more and more women go out to work,_________

A)--the labor force participation rates of men fall dramatically

B)--higher and higher living standards are desired and pursued

C)--they spend less and less time on child care than ever before

D)--there are more and more mature men who are made unemployed

89.The passage suggests that_________

A)--women make up a large proportion of the labor force than men

B)--most male employees retire at earlier ages than women do

C)--changes are taking place in women’s economic status

D)--at present more than half of the employees in the labor force are mothers with small children

90.Which of the following can be best sum up the passage?

A)The change of lifestyle brought about by technological innovations

B)The changes in the labor force and their causes

C)Women’s roles in white collar occupations

D)Social trends in the world of today

America’s national parks are like old friends. You may not see them for years at a time, but just knowing they’re out there makes you feel better. Hearing the names of these famous old friends ―Yosemite. Yellowstone, Grand Canyon ―revives memories of visits past and promotes dreams of those still to come.

From Acadia to Zion, 369 national parks are part of continually evolving system. Ancient fossil beds. Revolutionary War battlefields, magnificent mountain ranges, and monuments to heroic men and women who molded this country are all a part of our National Park System (NPS). The care and preservation for future generations of these special places is entrusted to the National Park Service. Uniformed Rangers, the most visible representatives of the Service, not only offer park visitors a friendly wave, a helpful answer, or a thought―provoking (引人深思) history lessons, but also are skilled rescuers, firefighters, and dedicated resource protection professionals. The National Park Service ranks also include architects, historians,

archaeologists, biologists, and a host of other experts who preserve and protect everything from George Washington’s teeth to Thomas Edison’s wax recordings.

Modern society has brought the National Park Service both massive challenges and enormous opportunities. Satellite and computer technologies are expanding the educational possibilities of a national park beyond its physical boundaries. Cities struggling to revive their urban cores are turning to the Park Service for expert assistance to preserve their cultural heritage(遗产),create pocket parks and green spaces, and re energize local economies. Growing communities thirsty for recreational outlets are also working with the NPS to turn abandoned railroad tracks into bike and hiking trails, as well as giving unused federal property new life as recreation centers.

To help meet these challenges and take advantages of these opportunities, the National Park Service has formed partnerships—some dating back 100 years, some only months old—with other agencies, state and local governments, corporations, American India tribes and Alaska Natives, Park Friends Groups, cooperating associations, private organizations, community groups and individuals who share the National park ethic(观念).

National Park Week 1996 is a celebration of these partnerships.

Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry------if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of neighborhood store flashes to me ,I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. If an incident occurs, the story of which I think the local Catholic priest could see, I call him up and tell him about it, though I am not a Catholic myself.

One discovery I made about giving away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told that there were no boxes left and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it that you wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a speech delivery to your home?”I said it was. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

My Ideal Job

I have long cherished a dream. Since my childhood, I have got a special interest in all the books about geography and adventure. Each time I read them, I envied the hero and heroine very much. Then I made up my mind that one day I world be just like them-to go around the world.

But, how could I realize it? Now it seems the best way is to be a tourist guide who can have so many chances to make free trips to almost anywhere in the world. How excellent it would be to see all the beautiful scenes all over the world-the vast prairie in Africa, the thick tropical forests in America, the crystal world in Antarctic, and so many other marvelous places! And, how interesting would it be to see people of different colors, to learn their native languages, to know their customs and habits, and to listen to their folk music, too!

If only I could get my ideal job one day, I should say with content when I end my day, “What a wonderful life I have lived”.

[专升本类试卷]专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷5 一、Part III Reading Comprehension Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. 0 On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy(多泥的)water running down the slopes(斜坡)of a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes. Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded(侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion. Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need. Plants need water and salts from the soil. We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation(保护). One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall. Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting "steps" called terraces(梯田). Water carrying soil cannot run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow(流速)of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces. There are some other ways for soil conservation. 1 On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because______ . (A)there are no terraces on the slopes (B)there are no small plants on the slopes (C)it washes away soil from the slopes
