Students in the United Kingdom will be using textbooks almost identical(完全相同的)to the ones that students in the Chinese city of Shanghai use from January 2018, in a bid to improve ailing mathematics test results.

The UK government will carry out the plan, worth US $ 54 million, which allows half of all primary school teachers to use the real Shanghai mathematics textbook series. As a result, the course’s 36 books will be adopted in their curriculum. The materials will be roughly the same, simply replacing Chinese Renminbi symbols with the British Pound’s. According to a New York Times report, Shanghai students topped international standardized testing of mathematics in 2010 based upon a “mastery”(熟练掌握)approach to maths education. “Maths mastery involves children being taught as a whole class, building depth of understanding of the structure of maths,

supported by the use of high-quality textbooks,”the British government said last July.

With the help of funding up to £41 million, more than 8,000 primary schools —half of the total number in England—will receive support to adopt the approach, which is used by some of the leading performers in maths in the world, including Shanghai and Singapore.

Unlike many Western countries, Chinese students’ performance in mathematics is above average in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).Data from the Programme for International Student Assessment released in 2015 by the OECD showed one in four students in Shanghai are top performers in mathematics. This means students can handle tasks that require the ability to formulate (确切表达)complex situations mathematically, using symbolic representations. The UK, however, has slightly lower numbers of top performers in mathematics than the OECD average.

“All the time, Asians have been learning from the Western education system,”Yong Zhao, a professor of education at The University of Kansas said as quoted by The New York Times.”Suddenly, it’s the reverse(相反的情况).”

24.What does the underlined word “ailing”in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/6b2983873.html,petitive.

B.impressive.

C.terrible.

D.stable.

25.What makes Shanghai’s students stand out in mathematics tests based on the passage?

A.Adopting excellent teaching methods.

B.Simplifying complex maths concepts.

C.Valuing students’ independent learning.

D.Subscribing to high-difficulty textbooks.

26.What does the content of Paragraph 3 mainly indicate?

A.Britain has a lack of high-quality textbooks.

B.Britain devotes a lot to advancing its education.

C.British education falls far behind that of Singapore.

D.British primary schools need people’s support most.

27.What can we infer from Yong Zhao’s words?

A.Cultural exchange should be advocated strongly.

B.China takes the lead in maths education in a way now.

C.Western and Asian countries should respect each other.

D.The Western education system needs improving greatly.

18-day-old Mariana Reese Sifrit was born a healthy baby girl. Just six days after her birth, she stopped eating and became unresponsive. She has died just 10 days after she was hospitalized with an unexpected illness. Doctors detected a type of virus in her body that’s responsible for cold sores(唇疱疹).Both parents tested negative for the virus, leading doctors to conclude that the virus had come from someone else who had touched or kissed Mariana—someone with the cold sore virus—but not necessarily with an open or noticeable sore.

By age 40, over 90 percent of the population has been exposed to the cold sore virus, according to Katherine Miao. And it can be spread without a noticeable cold sore, says Dr. Jarrett Patton. While in adults, the virus doesn’t usually present much risk, in babies, it can become serious and even deadly if it spreads throughout the body.

If someone with the virus touches a baby’s hand, says Dr. Patton, and the baby then touches its eyes, nose, or mouth, the virus can infect(使感染)the baby. Because a newborn baby has an underdeveloped immune system(免疫系统),the virus can quickly take the form of meningitis—a serious illness in which the tissue surrounding the brain becomes infected and swollen.

Does this mean that we need to keep people from touching and kissing our babies? Dr. Miao says that “exposure to the world is part of how the baby’s immune system develops”. She therefore advocates a “common sense approach”. Anyone who is obviously ill shouldn’t be getting anywhere close to a newborn. And people who want to touch a baby should wash their hands first. In addition, it’s a good idea to limit the touching on the stomach and forehead.

“This is a rare and extraordinary sad event,”says Charles E. Crutchfield, professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School,“and it reminds us all that we have to be very discreet around babies.”

28.Why did Mariana die at the age of 18 days?

A.Her immune system functioned abnormally.

B.She was born with a genetic disease.

C.She suffered from a virus infection.

D.The doctors treated her wrongly.

29.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A.The features of cold sore viruses.

B.The targets of cold sore viruses.

C.How cold sore viruses spread.

D.Why cold sore viruses can be deadly.

30.Which suggestion may Dr. Miao agree with?

A.Parents should always keep newborns’ hands clean.

B.People had better not touch the newborns frequently.

C.Sick people should be kept away from newborn babies.

D.Babies should be exposed to the world as much as possible.

31.What does the underlined word “discreet”in the last paragraph mean?

A.Careful.

B.Patient.

C.Tolerant.

D.Considerate.

June 2017 was the third-warmest June in history, putting 2017 on track to make a hat-trick(一人连续三次取胜)of the hottest years on record.

Experts said it is now“almost certain”that 2017 will become the third year in a row to break global temperature records. The first half of 2017 was the second-warmest on record for Earth, behind only the last year, according to new temperature data. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced today that the Earth’s average temperature from January to June 2017 was 14.4℃, which is 0.9℃ higher than that of the 20th century.

Globally, June 2017 was the third-warmest on record in records going back to 1880, beaten only by the two preceding Junes in 2015 and 2016. The figures are similar to NASA data released last week, which found that the June of this year was the fourth-hottest on record. NASA climate data is calculated in another way, and found that the June of 1998 was slightly warmer than that of this year.

Based on these results, Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said that 2017 will “almost certainly”be among the top three hottest years. “With a update to June, 2017 will almost certainly be a top 3 year in the GISTEMP record(most likely 2nd warmest—57% chance),”he said on Twitter.

Michael Mann, from The Pennsylvania State University, has previously published research showing that recent recorded temperatures have less than a one in a million chance of occurring naturally. “We have a follow-up article that we've submitted showing that the likelihood of three consecutive(连续的)record-breaking years such as what we saw in 2015—2017 is similarly unlikely,”he told The Guardian. “In short, we can only explain the recorded warm years by accounting for human-caused warming of the planet.”

32.What's the Earth's average temperature from January to June in the 1900s ?

A.12.8℃

B.13.5℃

C.14.4℃

D.15.3℃

33.What does Paragraph 3 suggest ?

A.The June of 1998 is the hottest month actually.

B.Different measures can cause different results.

C.People should dare to challenge NASA data.

D.NASA's measure isn't the most scientific.

34.What would Michael Mann probably agree with ?

A.Humans are to blame for global warming.

B. 2017 will surely be the hottest year on record.

C. The recent record of temperature isn't authentic.

D. The record-breaking hot years seem to continue.

35.What is the best title for the text ?

A. 2017—the warmest year in history.

B. Global warming — a serious problem.

C. Authoritative NASA data — a surprising result.

D. The third-hottest June —a continual warm year.

高三英语周练(1)试题 命题人:考试时间:50分钟总分:89分 Ⅰ. 阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held? A. In New Mexico. B. In the Caribbean. C. In Australia. D. In China.

四川省宜宾市一中2018-2019学年高三英语上学期第12周周练题 A As smart devices continue to fill people’s daily life, the debate over their place in the classroom has grown increasingly. Now, a study conducted at the United States Military Academy just might put an end to it. In a recent investigation, researchers found that students who were permitted to use laptops or tablets in the classroom performed worse than those who did not—and those with higher initial GPAs(平均成绩) were most heavily affected. While some argue that laptops aid students in note-taking and comprehension, many say that they couldn’t pay attention to the lessons. To get to the bottom of the issue, researchers investigated the effect of laptops and tablets on student performance in a course at a school. In the study, the class was then divided into two treatment groups. The first treatment group was permitted to use laptops and tablets for purposes relating to their lesson. If the students were obviously distracted, professors could stop them from using the devices. In the second group, students could only use tablets, making the screen easily visible to the professors. When it came time for final exam scores, the researchers found that using a laptop or tablet in the classroom had caused a drop of roughly one-fifth of a standard. The results for the two treatment groups were nearly the same, they say. And, the negative effects were seen most heavily in male students. The estimated effects of the two treatment groups are nearly the same, suggesting that even
