Introduction

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is one of the oldest and most important festivals

in China. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, which usually lands in late May or early June. In this festival, the Chinese people commemorate the

patriotic poet Qu Yuan and ward off evil spirits by eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), drinking realgar wine, and racing dragon boats.

Significance

The Dragon Boat Festival has been celebrated in China

for more than 2,000 years. It originated from the legend that Qu Yuan, a Chu kingdom loyal, jumped into the Miluo River to protest against the corrupt government and injustice, which

led to his death. The local people rowed their boats to

rescue Qu Yuan, but failed, so they threw sticky rice balls into the water to prevent fish and other creatures from

eating his body. Since then, it has become a custom to commemorate Qu Yuan by eating zongzi and racing dragon boats
