Unit 2 The Grand Canyon was not just big.

A great wonder of the natural world

When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east -- the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there.

After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. "Am I going the right way?" I asked. He knew where I was going. "Yes,”he replied, “you'll get there in five minutes," Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it. Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world - the Grand Canyon.

I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge!

I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself. "Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder of the natural world?" I certainly know the answer. What do you think?

Unit 2 We have celebrated the festival since the first pioneers arrived in America.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is an American festival. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It is a time for a special dinner among family and friends. People make short speeches and give thanks for their food.

We have celebrated the festival since the first pioneers from England arrived in America by ship in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they landed, their first winter was worse than any English winter. The local people, the Native Americans, taught the pioneers how to grow corn. The following year they celebrated together by eating a dinner of the new food.

We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. The kitchen is always the most crowded room in our house because we all help prepare the food .We lay the table, and then before we begin dinner, my father gives thanks for the food, so we remember why we celebrate the festival. We usually eat too much, but it is only once a year! We often talk a lot and tell stories after dinner as well. When it is all over, everyone helps wash the dishes.

The festival is a very busy time for travel when friends and families come together to celebrate. During the festival, there are plenty of other things to see and do. We live in New York City, and we go to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The parade goes along several streets and finishes at the famous Macy's store. Thanksgiving is the start of the Christmas season, and we start shopping for presents. Football is also important at Thanksgiving, with many teams playing games. Like many Americans, we usually watch the games on television and enjoy ourselves very much.

Unit 2 There were few doctors, so he had to work very hard on his own

My hero - Dr Norman Bethune

By Wang Lingling

Norman Bethune is one of the most famous heroes in China. He was a Canadian doctor. He came to China to help the Chinese people and died for them.

Norman Bethune was born in 1890. He became a doctor in 1916 and went to Spain in 1936 to treat the wounded soldiers during the war there. He soon realised that many people were dying because they did not get to hospital quickly enough. Dr Bethune developed new ways of taking care of the sick. He invented special medical tools to use outside hospitals and close to the fighting areas so that doctors could treat the wounded more quickly. His inventions saved many lives.

In 1938, Dr Bethune came to China and helped treat the wounded during the Anti- Japanese War. At that time, there were few doctors, so he had to work very hard on his own. His experience of treating people in Spain was useful in China. He developed training courses for local doctors and nurses, and wrote books so that they could learn about how he treated the sick.

Dr Bethune often worked very hard without resting or taking care of himself. Once, he even worked for sixty-nine hours without stopping and managed to save over a hundred lives. One day in 1939, he cut his finger during an operation, but he continued his work without treating it. In the end, he died of his wound.

Dr Bethune's work for the Chinese people made him a hero in China. There are many books and films about him, and he is still remembered in both China and Canada today.

Unit 2 I became so bored with their orders that I wished they would leave me alone.

My "perfect holiday"

As a boy, like all other boys, I wanted to be a man. But my parents did everything for me. Actually, they managed every minute of my life. Although they loved me, I felt a bit unhappy with them. "Zheng Chenyu, do your homework!" "Practise the piano!" "Turn off the TV!" I became so bored with their orders that I wished they would leave me alone.

Well, my wish came true! Although my parents were very worried about leaving me, they had to go away on business for a few days. Now was my chance! I could have some fun at last! As soon as I got home from school the first day, I happily threw my schoolbag on the sofa and ate lots of snacks. Then I enjoyed an exciting film on TV, and after that I played computer games. I liked the games so much that I played until mid-night.

The next morning I woke up late. I had to hurry to school without breakfast, but I was still late. The teacher asked me for my homework, but I could not hand it in. With an empty stomach, I was unable to play basketball with my classmates! I felt tired and sleepy at school all day long.

When I got home, I tried to cook some rice, but I burnt it. I even dropped my father's cup when I was cooking! I found myself so bad at simple cooking tasks. I started to feel lonely. I wanted Mum and Dad to come home soon. Mum cooked such delicious food, and made sure I never forgot my homework. Dad always helped me with any difficult questions, and told funny jokes when I was unhappy. Then I realised being home alone was not always perfect.

When my parents came home, they were happy to find that I could cook and tidy up now. I told them my home alone story and we all laughed.

Unit 2 If you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum

The Science Museum in London

By Tony Smith

Welcome to the most friendly museum in London. In most museums, there is no shouting and no running, and you must not touch anything. But the Science Museum is different... It is noisy! People talk about what they can see and do here, and there are some very noisy machines as well. If you want answers to all your questions about science, this is the right place for you.

I like to visit the rooms on the second and third floors. You can learn about communications and the environment as well as maths, physics and chemistry. For example, you can find out how people dig coal from the ground and use it to create energy. And in one room they even explain how X-rays let you sec inside your body.

The Launchpad on the third floor is the most popular room, and it is my favourite too because there are lots of physics experiments. For example, if you want to fill a bag with sand, you have to control a kind of truck on wheels and move it into the correct place. You can also find out how people travel into space and back again.

On the fourth and fifth floors, you can learn about what medicine was like in the past. If you compare the medicine of the past with the medicine of today, you will feel very lucky next time you visit a doctor!

The Science Museum is interesting for people of all ages. You can always find something new and have a wonderful time there. The museum is free to enter, so you can go in for a few minutes or stay all day. It is open daily from10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum. It is my favourite museum in the whole world!

Unit 2 If you tell him the truth now, you will show that you are honest.

Do you have a problem? Write to Diana at New Standard Magazine and ask for her advice.

Dear Diana,

Last week, my friend David came round with a new computer game and asked to play it on my dad's computer. I was worried, because I should ask my dad before I use his computer. He uses it for his work, and I can only use it for my homework. The reason is that he thinks it will go wrong if I play games on it.

Well, while my dad was out, we decided to try out David's game. We copied it to the computer, and after we finished playing, we took it off the computer. However, when I started the computer again to check if everything was OK, some of my dad's documents were missing. Then, when my dad used the computer last night, he was really angry. He could no longer find the documents anywhere! They were very important ones.

I did not tell him about the computer game because I did not want him to be angry with me. Now I feel terrible. I am not sure whether a computer engineer can get the documents back. Should I tell him about the computer game?

Should I pay to repair it?

Yours,

Steve

Dear Steve.

Oh, dear! You have made two mistakes. It is bad enough that you used your dad's computer to play games when he told you not to. And it is even worse that you did not tell him about it. If you tell him the truth now, he will be angry with you, but at least you will show that you are honest.

You should apologise to your father. You should also pay the bill to repair the computer. If you offer to give up your pocket money, your father will realise that you are very sorry. Remember, next time, play football with David and not computer games!

Best wishes.

Diana

Unit 2 It is still read and loved

A book review of The Adventure of Tom Sawyer

By Betty King

One of my favourite great books is The Adventure of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. The story is set in the town of St Petersburg, Missouri, the US, in the nineteenth century. It tells some exciting stories about a boy who has many adventures.

Tom, the hero of the book, lives with his aunt Polly. He is a lively and clever boy. He does not like people telling him what to do, so he always gets into trouble. He and his best friend, Huck Finn, run away to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River. Tom has more trouble because a bad man named Injun Joe is looking for him. Later, Tom escapes from a cave with another friend, Becky. He also finds Injun Joe's treasure box and takes it away.

My favourite part of the book is when Tom and Huck start their adventures on the island in the Mississippi River. At first, they are happy. But when they hear that everyone thinks they are dead, they feel very sorry, so they come back home. They hide and watch for a time when they see their family and neighbours coming to their funeral in the church. Then, Tom and Huck suddenly appear. Everyone is surprised to see them at first, but very pleased to find that they are alive.

The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a great book. It is more than an adventure story. Mark Twain wrote it in 1876. It describes people's lives in the southern states of America at that time. It tells how young people grow, how people love each other and how bad people pay for their actions. It is written in everyday English, and the dialogues sound especially real. Today, it is still read and loved by people all over the world, and it is thought to be one of the greatest American stories.

Unit 2 He was invited to competitions around the world.

Liu Xiang---trained to win!

For Liu Xiang, life as a sports hero began in 2004. First, he was invited to competitions around the world. Then, he was chosen for the Chinese team at the Athens Olympic Games and won a gold medal.

Liu Xiang was not a successful sportsman at first. He was born in Shanghai on 13th July 1983, and started training when he was very young. In Grade 4, he went to the Sports School of Putuo District of Shanghai. Liu was encouraged at first to train for the high jump.

In 1998, Liu Xiang's ability in hurdling was noticed by Sun Haiping, who later became his coach. In 2001, a special programme was set up to help young sportsmen and sportswomen. Liu Xiang was among them. His races were recorded, and he was compared with the world's best sports stars. Sun Haiping used the information to change his training methods for Liu Xiang.

In May 2001, Liu Xiang won his first international 110m hurdles race in Japan. In 2004, he won the first Olympic gold medal for China in the 110m hurdles race, and at the same time broke the Olympic Games record. It was also the first time an Olympic gold medal for hurdling was hung round the neck of a sportsperson from an Asian country.

Liu Xiang trained very hard. In fact, he trained so hard that he hurt his foot. From 2008 on, he suffered a lot from his foot problem, but he did not give up. Though he missed some competitions, he still returned to first place in the world 110m hurdles race in 2012.

It is a pity that his foot problem stopped him from completing the 2012 London Olympic Games. But he is still a symbol of courage and success, and we continue to take great pride in him.

Unit 2 Will books be replaced by the Internet?

Every morning, my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every day, I open my books in class and start my lessons. Every evening, my mother looks through magazines at home. And very night, I look at the photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or printing?

Paper was first created about 2,000 years ago in China. After its invention, people started to write on paper to make a book. In those days, books were only produced one at a time by hand. As a result, there were not many books, and they were expensive. So, few people had the chance to learn to read.

Printing was invented in China during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Later, developments in printing made it possible to produce books more quickly and cheaply. A trade in books resulted, and more people learnt to read. Knowledge and ideas spread faster than ever before. In a way, we can compare the invention of paper and printing to the introduction of the Internet in the twentieth century.

Although the Internet is still young, it is growing very fast, and may become more powerful than printing. A much larger amount of information can be stored on the Internet than in books. Someone with an Internet connection can find information much more easily than they can find in printed forms. And the machines we use to read it are now small and light, often smaller and lighter than a single book.

Computers and the Internet are used in classrooms now, and newspapers and magazines are already read online. So what direction will traditional printing take in the future? Will books be replaced by the Internet? Let's wait and see.

Unit 2 The game that they like most is Australian football

Dear Mum and Dad,

I am writing this letter to you from the centre of Australia. At the moment, we are staying near Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a plane tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometres long and 348 metres high! During different periods of the day, the colours of the rock turn dark blue, purple, yellow and red. Ayers Rock is a centre of local Aboriginal culture. The Aborigines are the people that have lived in Australia from the earliest times, and their ancient stories descried the spirits that created the world.

The Australians have a close relationship with the British. Many have British relatives, and they are like us in many ways. The foods that Australians like most are ham and beef with lots of salad. They also grow grapes and other fruits. They love all sports, but the game that they like most is Australian football. Because most Australians live near the coast, they also love going to the beach for swimming and surfing or just lying in the sun.

Although it is December, it is summer over here. The sun is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the middle of the country has no trees or grass, just rocks and sand…And kangaroos!

Australians speak English, but in their own way. For example, when they say “G'day!”and “No worries.”, they mean “Hello!”and “Don't worry about it. It's not a problem!”

On the second day, we went horse riding. The horse that I rode was lazy, so I was left far behind the others. But I enjoyed the slow and relaxing ride.

Later this evening, we are taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home. It has been a wonderful trip.

Love, Tony

Unit 2 The photo which we liked best was taken by Zhao Min

Results of the photo competition

Tonight I am more than happy to read out the winners of the photo competition. We were very pleased with our competition this year. Compared with other years, we received many more photos. Even though all of the photos are excellent, we are sorry to say that we cannot give prizes to everyone.

The person who won the prize for the subject Nature is fifteen-year-old Li Wei. Li Wei took a photo of the trees in Xiangshan Park. His photo shows the different colours on the hill.

The photo which we liked best in the City and People group was taken by Zhao Min. Zhao Min is only twelve years old. Her photo shows a person rushing across a street on a windy evening. It is a beautiful girl who is wearing a blouse and skirt, and who is protecting her books against the showers.

The best photo in the Music group was taken by He Zhong. His photo of the group Crazy Feet shows the singer, Becky Wang, and the band playing at a concert. He Zhong manages to show howthis great new band moves and sounds, and the good time which their fans are having.

A group of photos which show Beijing and Cambridge in England have won the prize for the subject Home and Away. They show some of the experiences of a young visitor to our country, and some memories of his home. The winner is Tony Smith!

Congratulations to our winners and thanks to everyone who entered the competition. Now let's welcome our headmaster to present the prizes to the winners!

Unit 2 Repeat these three words daily: reduce, reuse and recycle.

How to be green

How green are you? Answer these questions and find out.

.Do you walk or ride a bike to school?

.Do you buy new clothes just because they are modern?

.Do you turn off the lights when you leave the room?

.Do you take your own bag when shopping and not ask for a plastic bag?

.Do you buy drinks in bottles? And what do you do with the bottles whey they are empty? .Do you divide the waste into things to recycle and things to throw away?

We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day, and it is harmful to our environment. Repeat these three words daily: reduce, reuse and recycle.

Reduce

Reduce means “use less”. Do not waste things. It saves money and causes less pollution. Do not order more food than you can finish. Turn off the lights when you do not need them. Before you buy something new, think whether it is really necessary, because maybe the old one is just as good!

Reuse

Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. Look after them so that they will last. Repair them if possible. Do not throw them away and buy new ones. Do not use paper cups or paper bags. It is better to use china and cloth bags because they can be used many times. Recycle

Recycle means “change things into something else to be reused”. Although it takes energy to change things into something else, it is better than throwing things away or burning them. We throw tons of rubbish away each year, and we have to make a change. Divide your rubbish into plastic, glass, paper and rubber. Develop a recycling policy for the whole community. Buy products such as recycled paper to help save trees.

We cannot hope for rapid change, but let's take these simple steps today so that we will save the world for our grandsons and granddaughters tomorrow.

I feel nervous when I speak Chinese

FROM: Sally TO: Lingling

SUBJECT: Re : Welcome to China

Hi Lingling,

1. Thanks for your last message. It was great to hear from you, and I can't wait to meet you.

2. I hope you will know me from my photo when I arrive at the airport. I'm quite tall, with short fair hair, and I wear glasses. I'll wear jeans and a T-shirt for the journey, but I'll also carry my warm coat. I've got your photo----you look very pretty, so I'm sure we'll find each other!

3. Thanks for telling me about your hobbies. You sound just like me! I spend a lot of time playing classical music with my friends at school, but I also like dance music---I love dancing! I enjoy sports as well, especially tennis. My brother is in the school tennis team---I'm very proud of him! He's good at everything, but I'm not. Sometimes I get bad marks at school, and I feel sad. I should work harder.

4. You asked me, ---How do you feel about coming to China?‖Well, I often feel a bit sad at first when I leave my mum and dad for a few days, and I'm quite shy when I'm with strangers. I feel nervous when I speak Chinese, but I'll be fine in a few days. I'm always sorry when I don't know how to do things in the right way, so please help me when I'm with you in China! Oh, I'm afraid of flying. But I can't tell you how excited I am about going to China! See you next week!

Love,

Sally

They have seen the Pyramids.

Mike Robinson is a fifteen-year-old American boy and his sister Clare is fourteen. At the moment, Mike and Clare are in Cairo in Egypt, one of the biggest and busiest cites in Africa.

They moved here with their parents two years ago. Their father, Peter, works for a very big compa ny. The company has offices in many countries, and it has sent Peter to work in Germany, France a nd China before. Peter usually stays in a country for about two years. Then the company moves hi m again. His family always goes with him.

The Robinsons love seeing the world. They have been to many interesting places. For example, in Egypt, they have seen the Pyramids, travelled on a boat on the Nile River, and visited the palaces a nd towers of ancient kings and queens. Mike and Clare have also begun to learn the language of t he country, Arabic. This language is different from English in many ways, and they find it hard to spell and pronounce the words. However, they still enjoy learning it. So far they have learnt to spe ak German, French, Chinese and Arabic. Sometimes they mix the languages. It's really fun, said Cla re.

The Robinsons are moving again. The company has asked Peter to work back in the US. Mike and Clare are happy about this. They have friends all over the world, but they also miss their friends i n the US. They are counting down the days.

We have not found life on any other planets yet.

Scientists think that there has been life on earth for hundreds of millions of years. However, we have not found life on any other planets yet.

The earth is a planet and it goes around the sun. Seven other planets also go around the sun. None of them has an environment like that of the earth, so scientists do not think they will find life on them. The sun and its planets are called the solar system, and our solar system is a small part of a much larger group of stars and planets, called the Galaxy or the Milky Way. There are billions of stars in the Galaxy, and our sun is only one of them.

Scientists have also discovered many other galaxies in the universe. They are very far away and their light has to travel for many years to reach us. So how large is the universe? It is impossible to imagine.

Scientists have sent spaceships to the plant of Mars to take photos. They even have sent spaceships to travel outside the solar system. However, no spaceship has travelled far enough to reach near other stars in our Galaxy.

Scientists have always asked the question: With so many stars in the universe, are we alone, or is there life out there in space? Have there been visitors to the earth from other planets? Why has no one communicated with us? We do not know the answers…yet.

We have played football for a year now.

Healthy living

1. I was not feeling very well so the doctor checked my heart and said I needed more exercise. I have never been very active, and I do not like sports. I have always wanted a pet, so my parents gave me a dog for my birthday. Now I get exercise by taking him for a walk every day. I have had him for three months now and I feel really healthy. ----Anna

2.Our teacher decided to start a girl's football team and I thought: ―What a great idea!‖I was the first member of the team. We have played football for a year now and we all feel very fit. Our teacher is the coach, and she also takes part in the same training with us. She is in excellent condition too. ---- Wang Wei

3. In the last few years, I went to work by underground. When I got to work, I always felt very sleepy and I was not happy. I bought a bike in January. Science then, it has become part of my life. Now I ride to wok every day. It is my daily exercise. I arrive at work with a smile on my face. ---- Thomas

4. Feeling weak after a long illness, I wanted to exercise more. Then a friend suggested, ―Why don't we go for a run before school?‖So we started running a week ago. But I do not enjoy running, and when I get to school, I feel awful. My legs hurt and I am hot all over. Perhaps I am too weak to do any exercise. What do you think? ----Richard

Cartoon heroes

Nemo is a cute orange-and-white fish and Shrek is an ugly green animal. They look very different, but both of them have won the hearts of young people all over the world. The pictures of these popular cartoon heroes are everywhere, on office desks, handbags, and computer screens.

There are also some older cartoon favourites. Monkey King has just had his 50th birthday‖. He is the hero of a story called Making Havoc in Heaven. He leads a group of monkeys against the Emperor of Heaven and his guards. He is brave, clever and humorous. Parents and children laugh together as Monkey King makes a terrible mess in heaven. They always expect to see more Monkey King cartoons.

Tintin is another favourite cartoon hero. He has been popular for over eighty years, ever since the artist invented him in 1929. Tintin has red hair and a small white dog. He works for a newpaper and has lots of exciting experiences. Fans have bought about 200 million copies of Tintin's stories in more than fifty languages. Tintin appeared in China in the 1980s. SUBJECT: Wonderful time in Zhangjiajie Dear Mum and Dad,

I promised to write, so...

We're staying with Lingling's uncle in Hunan Province, and I'm having a wonderful time here in Z hangjiajie. It's a magic land of mountains, forests and rivers. It's very large, about 480 square kilo metres. It's famous for the strange shape of its tall rocks. Some of them look like humans, and othe rs look like wild animals.

Last night we camped by a small lake. During the night, we heard some noise! It woke everyone u p. We thought somebody was moving about. Lingling's uncle said it was an animal. We came out without making any noise, and found it was just a hungry monkey looking for food.

This morning, we climbed Mount Tianzi! From the top we hoped to see the lakes and forests. But i t was a pity that it was cloudy. We could only see the mountain tops above the clouds. Then we wa lked down the path, along a river, past trees and other plants and back to the camp. I pulled a leaf off a plant, but Lingling's uncle said that it was wrong to pull leaves off plants and that we should protect everything here. I was very sorry.

Tomorrow we're going to Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in China. We'll to bac k home next week! Wish you were here!

Love,

Betty

A beautiful smile

By Zhang Bei

When I was thirteen years old, a girl gave me an important gift. It was a smile. It was the early autumn of my first year at a new school. No one knew me. I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone. Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt even more lonely. I could not talk to anyone about my problem, and I did not want my parents to worry about me.

One day, my classmates are talking with their friends, but I sat in silence. At that moment, a girl entered the classroom. I did not know who she was. She passed me and then turned back. She looked at me and, without a word, smiled. Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy, lively and warm. It was like a hidden treasure.

That smile changed my life. I started to talk with the other students. Day by Day, I learnt to trust people, and they included me in their circle of friends. The girl with the bright smile has become my best friend now, and we stick together like glue. One day, I asked her why she smiled at me that day. She said she could not remember!

Now I believe that the world is what you think it is. If you think you are lonely, you might always be alone. My suggestion is: Smile at the world and it will smile back.

Radio times

“How old are you?” the radio studio manager looked down at me.

“Fifteen,” I said.

“And you want a job in radio? Shouldn’t you be at school?” he asked.

How could I explain? I’ve always loved the radio. I still remember, When I was about four years old, I sat close to the radio in the living room, listening to my favourite programmes, and to the voices of my favourite presenters. It seemed that they were speaking not to lots of listeners but to me in person. At the age of nine, I asked for part–time jobs in small radio stations.

As I grew older, my interest in radio grew. One day I learnt about Internet radio. Once a week, I played my favourite music from my father’s computer, talked about life at school, and hoped someone might be listening.

Soon my friends at school started to listen, and then they wanted to help. We prepared a programmes once a week, doing research on articles about music, sports news, jokes and the weather report (I did this by looking out of the window).

“OK, come with me,” the manager said. I sat down in the studio. He was in another room, behind a glass wall.

“OK, let’s do a sound check. Just tell me what you had for breakfast.”

All radio presenters need to answer the same question before they begin work. The purpose is to check the sound level.

“I had eggs, fruit and some milk.”

“OK, that’s great!” The man behind the glass said.

This was how my first real job in radio began.

M1-Unit 2

You should smile at her!

Send your questions to Diana, the Language Doctor.

Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English. Here are three basic questions. The first question is about understanding English films and songs. Li Hao from Hubei wrote, “I like watching English films and listening to English songs, but I can only understand a little. What can I do?”

Watching films and listening to songs are great way to learn English! Watch and listen several times, and guess the meaning of the new words. Each time you will learn something new. I also advise you to talk about the films or songs with your friends.

The second question is about speaking. Wang Fan from Jilin wrote, “Our school has a teacher from the US. I am shy and I am afraid to speak to her. What should I do?”

You can say, “Hello! How are you?”“Do you like China?”These are good ways to start a conversation. And before you begin, you should smile at her! Remember this: Do not be shy. Just try.

The third question is about vocabulary. Zhang Lei from Anhui wrote, “I write down new words, but I forget them quickly. How can I remember them?”

Do not worry. It is natural to forget new words! I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room. Read the words when you see them, and try to use them.

M2-Unit 2

Cambridge is a beautiful city in the east of England.

Cambridge, London and England

By Tony Smith

I come from Cambridge, a beautiful city in the east of England. It is on the River Cam and has a population of about 120,000. My home is especially famous for its university. Many famous people studied here, such as Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. There are lots of old buildings and churches to visit. Students and tourists enjoy trips along the river by boat.

Cambridge is 80 kilometres from London. London is in the south of England and it is on the River Thames. It has a population of about seven and a half million, so it is bigger and busier than Cambridge. It is about 2,000 years old, and it is famous for Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge.

England itself is a part of an island, and you are always near the sea. The small villages and beaches on the coast are popular for holidays. Tourists like the areas of low and beautiful lakes in the north, and the hills and pretty villages in the south. Everywhere in England you will notice how green the countryside is.

It is never very hot in summer or very cold in winter. So come and see England any time of the year, but bring an umbrella with you. You will need it most days.

M3- Unit2 This year we practice more carefully.

Training hard

By Li Daming

It is Saturday tomorrow, but I am going to school. I am not going for lessons, but to play football.

I am in our school team and we are going to play against another school next week. The practice st arts at 10 am. We all arrive as early as we can so that we have time to warm up. We are training ha rder than usual because the other team beat us last year. This year we want to do better.

It is more difficult to practise in winter because the days are short and the weather is cold too. It ge ts dark earlier, so it is important not to be late for after-school practice.

Our coach is pleased because we are playing better as a team now. Last year we were sometimes c areless when we passed the ball and we lost to the other team in the final match. What a pity! This year we practise more carefully. That means we have a better chance of winning.

The fan club has fewer people this year. We hope to play well so that we have more fans to watch t he matches. It is good to have our fans around. They cheer us on loudly and we feel more confiden t to win the game.

M4-Unit2 What is the best way to travel?

Question: What is the best way to travel from London to Amsterdam.

I am planning to travel from London to Amsterdam. How long does the journey take and what is t he best way to travel? Could you please tell me about the trains or ships to get there? The more inf ormation, the better. Thanks!

Best answer: There are four ways to travel.

A journey by train is more relaxing than by coach, but a lot more expensive. When you go by trai n, buy your ticket a long time before you travel. It is usually cheaper. You can go by car and by s hip across the North Sea. This is the most comfortable way to travel but also the most expensive. Book your ticket before you book your hotel. Remember that parking in Amsterdam is very expen sive, so stay outside the city centre and travel in by bus or by train.

The third choice is by coach. This is usually the cheapest, but in summer the coaches sometimes g et crowded! And it takes you about twelve hours to get there. However, it will not cost as much as going by train.

Finally, you can fly. It is the fastest and the second cheapest, but you may have to wait for hours a t the airport because of bad weather. Well, I hope this helps! Have a great trip.

Born in 1879 in Ulm, Germany, Albert Einstein was two years old when his parents moved to Munich, where his father opened a business in electrical supplies. Psychologically there are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue absorption in the past.

One day, while I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan put my big rag doll into my lap also, spelled “d-o-l-l” and tried to make me understand that “d-o-l-l” applied to both. If they are disappointed at one place, the drillers go to another. It is like a dream to me now, floating through my mind in slow motion. Many children were playing close to the water, and we were stunned by their ignorance and daring.

There was something wrong with my computer yesterday. When(we are)in difficulty/When we meet with difficulties/When we have difficulties ,what we need is not to blame each other but to help each other. We should do something to prevent the spread of this disease. What can we do to prevent the spread of this disease? He is likely to get the driving license with his own efforts. 其实,学生对likely这个key word的使用也是会的,完全能够使用be likely to do或It’s likely th at… Shanghai has gone through…,it has become…,这已成为很多学生的一个习惯,句子和句子中随便用逗号隔开,英语不像中文,必须要考虑到句子的结构,逗号也不能随意使用。

They are as like as two peas . (形容词)He likes mathematics more than physics . (动词) Wheat, oat, and the like are cereals . He is the last man to come . He is the last person for such a job . He should be the last man to blame. This is the last place where I expected to meet you .

Confucius was a great thinker and educator in Chinese history. He was the founder of Confucianism and was respectfully referred to as an ancient "sage". His words and life story were recorded in The Analects. An enduring classic of ancient Chinese culture, The Analects has had a great influence on the thinkers, writers, and statesmen that came after Confucius. Without studying this book, one could hardly truly understand the thousands-of-years' traditional Chinese culture. Much of Confucius' thought, especially his thought on education, has had a profound influence on Chinese society. In the 21st century, Confucian thought not only retains the attention of the Chinese, but it also wins an increasing attention from the international community. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, August 15 of every year is a traditional Chinese festival — the Mid-Autumn Festival. This day is the middle of autumn, so it is called Mid-Autumn. One of the important Mid-Autumn Festival activities is to enjoy the moon. On that night, people gather together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, looking up at the bright moon and eating

共同关心的问题questions of common interest 解决问题solve a problem 问题的关键the heart of the matter 关键问题a key problem 原则问题a question/ matter of principle 悬而未决的问题an outstanding issue 没有什么问题Without any mishap 摩托车有点问题。Something is wrong with the motorcycle. That is not the point. Serious cases of embezzlement, bribery, and bureaucracy have been brought to light

recently. For Those Fallen for Their Country,北外出版社将《儒林外史》译为:The Scholars。 And tossed the pen on the table. He intoned the verses to himself,

如“I decidedto sit at his feet”这句话的字面意思是“我决定坐在他的脚上”,但实际上,“sit at his feet”是一个习语,表示“拜他为师”。

(1)John likes to pat himself on the back. (2)Then it happened that I had to answer the call of nature, and, passing, I saw the risen dough, which seemed to say to me, "Do it!" In brief, I let myself be persuaded. (3)He kissed the hare's foot. There is no love lost between them. (1) It is a good horse that never stumbles. (不宜译成"良马不失蹄")(2) It is a good man that never stumbles, and a good wife that never grumbles. (不宜译成"从不失足的丈夫是好丈夫,从不唠叨的妻子是好妻子")(3)It is an ill bird that fouls its own nest. (4) Time and tide wait for no man. (5) Of soup and love, the first is the best. (6)In choosing a wife and buying a sword we ought not to trust another.
