ANNABEL Greene used to be the girl who had everything: cool friends, a close family and good grades.

She and her best friend Sophie are always invited to all the parties. But then, at a party on the last day of school, Sophie sees Annabel being intimate with her boyfriend. Suddenly, Annabel is the girl who has nothing –no friends and no reputation (名声).

After a difficult summer, Annabel starts the new school year alone. During her lonely lunch hours, she becomes familiar with Owen Armstrong.

Owen was kicked out of school the previous year for getting into fights. He is back from his anger management classe s. Annabel is accustomed to holding back her true feelings, but she is taken aback when Owen points out the ways she uses certain language to avoid expressing her true feelings.

As Owen pushes Annabel outside her comfort zone, she slowly begins to change. She then gains the courage to tell Sophie what really happened that night at the party.

Just Listen by US writer Sarah Dessen ranks second in the 2007 Teens Top Ten book awards. More than 6,000 teenage readers across the US listed their favorite books from October 14 to 20.

Land Rover once used the slogan "The best 4x4xfar," and we have

to agree for the 2011 model year. We may have laughed at this

latte-sipping luxo-truck when it arrived, but by the end of the week we

were all digging out our kahki shirts and buttoning up our sleeves. The

Land Rover PR guys even admitted that they had been spending too much energy on the high end of the market and not enough on off-road ability, but not anymore. The LR4 impressed every judge who drove it. It is a buggy in the rocks, a sports car on the street, and a prerunner in the desert, and it still has room for too much equipment (plus, did we mention that you can sleep in it?).

Complaints? It costs too much, needs better tires and wheels, and we had an unexplained failure of an ABS https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,/ https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,/

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,/https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html, sensor near the end of the test. This caused the computer to lower the vehicle's suspension to a limp-home mode as well as change all the brake parameters. Despite the crippled sensor, the LR4 still performed superbly.

The LR4 was a delight in almost every going, but it only won in the rockcrawling and

urban/highway tests outright. Even though it didn't get the blue ribbon in hillclimbing, highspeed, or sand, it did rank high enough while the competitors flip-flopped without gathering consistently high numbers.

In the end, the LR4 won because it made four-wheeling fun. It has steering, gearing, and power in a package that offers great visibility and protection. What more could you ask for?

45. What’s people’s impression of the vehicle at the first sight?

A. It doesn’t look very nice.

B. It is too costly to owe one.

C. It is big enough for a bedroom.

D. It was a delight for everybody there.

46. How did it perform in the upcoming competitions?

A. It defeated all other competitors.

B. It won in some and failed in others.

C. It did well but never got the blue ribbon.

D. It disappointed everybody in the competitions.

47. Why did it win in the end?

A. Because it performed the best in the desert.

B. Because it is especially good at climbing hills.

C. Because it makes driving a pleasant experience.

D. Because it can run faster than all the other vehicles.

C

Our boat floated on between walls of forest. It was too thick to allow us a view of the land we were passing through, though we knew from the map that our river must from time to time be passing through chains of hills which crossed the jungle plains. Nowhere did we find a place where we could have landed: where the jungle did not actually spread right down into the river, banks of soft mud prevented us from going ashore. In any case, what would we have gained by landing? The country was full of snakes and other dangerous creatures and the jungle was so thick that one would have to advance slowly, cutting one’s way with knives the whole way. So we stayed in the boat, hoping that when we reached the sea, a friendly fisherman would pick us up and take us to civilization.

As for water, there was a choice. We could drink the muddy river water, or die of thirst. We drank the water. Men who have just escaped from what appeared to be certain death lost all worries about such small things as diseases caused by dirty water. In fact, none of us suffered from any illness as a result.

One day we passed another village, but fortunately nobody saw us. We did not wish to risk being taken prisoners a second time: we might not be so lucky as to escape in a stolen boat again.

48. It can be inferred from the passage that the only thing they could see in a boat was _______.

A. walls

B. chains of hills

C. vast land

D. tall trees

49. From the passage, we can learn that _______.

A. they were on a journey home

B. it was not better for them to go by land

C. they could find a proper place to go ashore

D. they would be picked up by a friendly fisherman

50. What was their experience in the first village?

A. They found food and clean drinking water.

B. They were treated as guests by the villagers.

C. They were caught and locked up in a room.

D. They got refreshed and built a new boat.

51. Which of the following might be the best title for this passage ?

A. The Problem of Landing

B. An Escape

C. An Entirely New Experience

D. An Adventure

The library is one of the most popular places at a western university. Students turn to it for research, conversations about class, and many other services.

Compared with Chinese libraries, college libraries in the US and UK tent to offer more resources. A postgraduate at Yale University can borrow as many as 225 books at a time.

In addition to borrowing books, there are online and electronic resources. These include a database search of popular and academic materials, such as LexisNexis Academic, which offer items from newspapers and magazines.

Although books and articles are the items that students ask for most frequently, some libraries provide audio and video recordings, maps and sheet music. At some schools, teachers and tutors put electronic https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,/https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,/https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,/ https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,/bloghttps://www.wendangku.net/doc/9b3030659.html,/gene201copies of their teaching PPTs on the library Web to give easier access for students.

Another useful service in Western college libraries is the Interlibrary Loan. This allows a student at one school to borrow books from another school. The loan request is made through the student’s college library, which gets the book, gives it to the user, and arranges for its return.

Technology has brought more services to students and has made libraries attractive. Some universities have services for students to send messages through the computer or mobile texts to ask the library staff for information.

Earlier this year, Harvard University introduced a new Scan and Deliver service, allowing students to make requests for parts of books and articles. Requests made through the system are

handled by library staff. The student receives and e-mail with an Internet link to the scanned pages. The service is free and all material comes within four days.

It used to be that libraries didn’t allow food or drinks. But that rule is changing and many of them now contain a café so students can spend as much time as they want in the library.

Actually, some US university libraries are now all-night affairs, or have at least one study room open all night.

52. In Western college libraries a postgraduate can ______.

A. have a free drink or a meal

B. borrow as many books as they want

C. access not only books but other study resources

D. ask questions and get answers from their tutors

53. LexisNexis Academic is the name of ______.

A. a database

B. a library

C. a university

D. a guide

54. How can a college student borrow books from other college’s librar ies?

A. By going to these libraries.

B. By getting them through the Internet.

C. By borrowing them through their own library.

D. By sending messages through the computer or mobile texts.

55. Why are university libraries more attractive now?

A. Because students can eat and drink there at any time.

B. Because students can have a stay-over there all night.

C. Because students can borrow anything they want there.

D. Because students can enjoy quicker and more convenient services.
