A

Suppose you’re in a rush, feeling tir ed, not paying attention to your screen, and you send an email that could get you in trouble.

Realisation will probably set in seconds after you’ve clicked “send”. You freeze in horror and burn with shame.

What to do? Here are four common email accidents, and how to recover.

Clicking “send” too soon

Don’t waste your time trying to find out if the receiver has read it yet. Write another email as swiftly as you can and send it with a brief title explaining that this is the correct version and the previous version should be ignored.

Writing the wrong time

The sooner you notice, the better. Respond quickly and briefly, apologising for your mistake. Keep the tone measured: don’t handle it too lightly, as people can be offended, especially if your error suggests a misunderstanding of their culture(i.e. incorrect ordering of Chinese names).

Clicking “reply all” unintentionally

You accidentally reveal(透露)to the entire company what menu choices you would prefer at the staff Christmas dinner, or what holiday you’d like to take. In this instance, the best solution is to send a quick, light-hearted apology to explain your awkwardness. But it can quickly rise to something worse, when everyone starts hitting “reply all” to join in a long and unpleasant conversation. In this instance, step away from your keyboard to allow everyone to calm down.

Sending an offensive message to its subject

The most awkward email mistake is usually committed in anger. You write an unkind message about someone, intending to send it to a friend, but accidentally send it to the person you’re discussing. In that case, ask to speak in person as soon as possible and say sorry. Explain your frustrations calmly and sensibly—see it as an opportunity to clear up any difficulties you may have with this person.

21. If you have written the wrong name in an email, it is best to ________.

A. apologise in a serious manner

B. tell the receiver to ignore the error

C. learn to write the name correctly

D. send a short notice to everyone

22. What should you do when an unpleasant conversation is started by your “reply all” email?

A. Try offering other choices.

B. Avoid further involvement.

C. Meet other staff members.

D. Make a light-hearted apology.

23. How should you deal with the problem caused by an offensive email?

A. By promising not to offend the receiver again.

B. By seeking support from the receiver’s friends.

C. By asking the receiver to control his anger.

D. By talking to the receiver face to face.

In the U. S. state of Washington, a road called Interstate 90 cuts through a wild mountainous area to reach the city of Seattle. For the area's many kinds of animals, the busy highway greatly limits their movements. Animals need to move to find food, to find mates and to find new places to live. Crossing I-90 as the road is called is a risky but sometimes necessary act. But soon, animals will have a safer choice.

To help the animals, the state is finishing work on its largest-ever wildlife bridge. The 11-meter-tall, 20-meter-wide bridge begins in the forest. Workers are adding fencing anti-plants to help guide the animals across the bridge. The I-90 bridge is part of a growing number of wildlife crossings across the United States. Some are fences, some are overland bridges, and some are underpasses. They all aim to keep drivers and animals away from each other.

A U.S. Transportation Department study found crashes between animals and humans rose year by year. The accidents made up about 5 percent of all crashes nationally, and cost the economy about $8 billion. Such costs come from car repaid, emergency room visits and removal of the dead animals on roads. Collisions between animals and drivers are rarely deadly to people. But they are often deadly to wildlife. The study also found that 21 endangered or threatened species in the U.S. are affected by vehicle hits.

Patty Garvey Darda of the U. S. Forest Service says the $6-million bridge will one day pay for itself because the highway will not have to be fully or partly closed each time a large animal is struck. “If you shut down Interstate 90, you shut down interstate trade.” she adds.

24. Why is moving across highways necessary for animals?

A. To survive.

B. To find food.

C. To follow their habit.

D. To free their movements.

25. What are those wildlife crossings in the U.S. built for?

A. Avoiding human deaths.

B. Preventing car accidents.

C. Increasing interstate trade.

D. Protecting wild animals.

26. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?

A. Highlight the harm caused by car accidents.

B. Show the costs related to car-animal crashes.

C. Explain the necessity of wildlife crossings.

D. Present the urgency to protect wild species.

27. What is Darda’s attitude towards the building of I-90?

A. Opposed.

B. Concerned.

C. Favorable.

D. Indifferent.

C

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.

Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.

Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.

Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin –offs of space exploration. The technical improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems have long been in effect.

While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human

beings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.

28. What might be the key to those questions mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A. Humans’ nature.

B. Knowledge.

C. Civilization.

D. Potential dangers.

29. Which of the following can best replace “spin-offs” underlined in paragraph 4?

A. Applications.

B. Shortcomings.

C. Advantages.

D. Gains.

30. In which situation may this text be applied properly?

A. A private conversation.

B. A class presentation.

C. A cartoon picture.

D. A fashion review.

31. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. How Knowledge Benefits Us

B. What Humans Spread for

C. Why to Explore Space

D. How Humans Save Ourselves

D

There are billions of people on this planet, and many of us love to eat meat. In 2018 alone, the average American will consume more than 100 kgs of red meat, according to a report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). At the same time, the environmental impact caused by meat consumption – waste, animal treatment, health issues and even the greenhouse gas effects – has given rise to a number of startups (新兴企业)looking for ways to fill our growing demand for meat. But can the demand be filled in a sustainable and affordable way?

A bunch of companies are not only optimistic but are working to make this happen sooner. All of these companies harvest cells from animals and grow them in a lab. For example, San Francisco-based Memphis Meats is developing cell-based meats in its laboratories by manufacturing fat and muscle cells without requiring any animals. And don’t worry if you’re not a meat lover. Startups such as Jet Eat, which is based in Israel, are working on food products grown in labs that are plant based and produce meats using natural ingredients while still maintaining flavor, consistency and the “overall sensory experience”.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of hurdles facing the industry. Educating the public is a big one. Another controversial issue is the labelling of the products. Meat industry trade groups have been pressing the USDA to more strictly regulate alternative meats, labeled as “imitation products”.

Many of us have concerns about the challenges facing future generations as our global population swells and the earth’s natural resources shrink. The good news is that there are plenty of companies around the world – like those producing lab-grown meats - who are working to solve some of these problems and make a few bucks in the process. Nothing wrong with that.

32. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?

A. Protecting the meat industry.

B. Promoting a healthy lifestyle.

C. Reducing meat consumption gradually.

D. Meeting human demands for meat sustainably.

33. What kind of meat does Jet Eat produce?

A. It tastes as good as real meat.

B. It is harvested directly from animals.

C. It looks like plants completely.

D. It contains fat and muscle cells.

34. According to the passage, how can consumers tell the lab-grown meat?

A. By receiving public education.

B. By referring to the label.

C. By observing it closely.

D. By consulting the USDA.

35. What is the text mainly about?

A. Extraordinary jobs done by new startups.

B. Lab-grown meat ready to feed the world.

C. Effective strategies applied when shopping.

D. The existing threat faced by humans.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选择中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Telepathy(心灵感应)is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses. It is an instinct ( 本能),and although quite inactive in many of us, we are often capable of tapping into our latent ( 潜在的) abilities in times of emergency or need.

36 Some say that it is located in the huge area of our brains that are wholly unused, whereas others argue that instinct existed before the brain developed gradually and must therefore lie else-where in the body.

When we unconsciously know that something is happening, or about to happen, our instinct has kicked in. We are drawing upon resources within the unconscious mind. 37

Telepathy can be either prospective or perceptive; in other words we either send or receive. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person, and they call you, you are most likely better at sending.

38 Think of somebody and try to make him or her contact you. Be patient; the other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normall y be expected. Or whenever the phone rings, try “feeling” who's contacting you. Don't guess, try to feel the vibrations. 39 As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to kick in under emergency.

Dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other, and find that their dreams had a clear connection. These people are probably mutually linking to the unconscious mind.

The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link

up to the others' mind, especially when separated. 40 One is that they understand the others' mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child desperately wanting his/her mother, knowing that this

is the person who would always want to be there for them, and the mothers have deep desire to protect her child from harm.

A.There are two reasons for this.

B.Where this instinct lied is uncertain.

C.Y ou can easily put your abilities to the test.

D.Let’s have an understanding of what telepathy really is.

E.People are using resources within the unconscious mind.

F.However, if neither of these work for you, that doesn't mean that you are not

capable of telepathy.

G.W hen the resources of two unconscious minds link together into the same

frequency, we call it “telepathy”.

Part of her couldn't wait. This Saturday, the great Ana Wolff famous pianist, would perform at the concert hall in town. For four years, Elizabeth had listened to Ms Wolffs recordings over and over again, loving the way the notes flowed like a rushing mountain stream.

Part of Elizabeth was terrified. Her music teacher at school, Mr.Leaf, had asked her to present the flowers to Ms Wolff after the performance. But Elizabeth knew herself well. She had severe stage fright and she really hated it when she had to talk in front of people.Even so, Elizabeth was determined to take the challenge this time.

“How's the speech going?"asked Elizabeth's mother."Want to practice on me?”

"No,thanks."said Elizabeth."Mum,I can't do this! I'll forget.I might even pass out!”

“Oh,honey. Think about it...sharing the stage with Ana Wolff. What an honour!” Mum gently comforted her.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer for the Chinese Painting Exhibition which will be held in your art gallery. I think I am qualified for this job, because I have learned Chinese painting since childhood. Besides, I am fluent in both Chinese and English, which is beneficial for introducing Chinese paintings. If I am lucky enough to be chosen as a volunteer, I can show visitors around the gallery and get them to know more about Chinese painting.

I would be very grateful if you could offer me the opportunity. I’m looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Then came the dreaded moment. Clutching the roses, Elizabeth got up the courage to walk slowly to the spot where Ms.Wolff was standing. Elizabeth opened her mouth, mouthing the very six words. But no sound came out. She tried again, only to feel the words stuck in her throat. She began to see dots in front of her eyes. She took a deep breath and murmured,"Beaut...Beautiful flowers for a beautiful performance! "With this, she tentatively presented the roses to Ana Wolff, who,in return, wrapped Elizabeth in a big hug.

The audience cheered and clapped loudly for them. Through the glare of the footlights, Elizabeth could see the crowd smiling. Backstage, Elizabeth told Ms Wolff about her stage fright."That is how l feel every time l go onstage! You need to swallow that fear and go out here anyway."said Ms.Wolff,smiling. "Just the way you did tonight. "Then the great Ana Wolff gently drew a single red rose from her bouquet and gave it to Elizabeth. "Here is a beautiful flower for a brave girl."
