Two of the saddest words in the Englishlanguage are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never havingto say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.

My father is famous in our family for saying, “Takethe extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extraminute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, Ialways thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away fromthe edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such astaping padding onto the sharp corners ofa glass coffee table.

I don’t only avoid those “if only”moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only”in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one andregretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you”or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eyedoctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holidayfor my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact thathe’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to seehim. I called him and told him I had

decided to go to work on my day off afterall.

I know there will still be occasions when Ihave to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitelybetter because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid thateventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, orit occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personalconnection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace ofmind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.

(1)Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?

A . Start the car the moment everyone is seated.

B . Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.

C . Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.

D . Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

(2)The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ___________.

A . keep her appointment with the eye doctor

B . meet her father who was already an old man

C . join in the holiday celebration of the company

D . finish her work before the deadline approached

(3)The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ___________.

A . avoided

B . lacked

C . abandoned

D . abused

Why do human beings still risk their livesunder ground and doing one of the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs in theworld? It is an increasingly urgent question, given the recent mining accidentsin Sago, W. Va and Huntington,

Utah. A small group of engineers and roboticsexperts look forward to a day in the not-too-distant future when robots andother technology do most of the dangerous mining work.

Robotic technology, in particular, holds muchpromise, McAteer says, especially when it comes to mapping mines and rescuingtrapped miners — the special operations of the mining industry.

One of the first mining robots was developedfive years ago at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. It wascalled Groundhog. It used lasers to “see” in dark tunnels and map abandoned mines—some of the most dangerous work in thebusiness.

The latest design is called Cave Crawler. It’sa bit smaller than Groundhog, and even more advanced. It can take photos andvideos and has more sensors that can detect the presence of dangerous gases.Incredibly, the robot has a real sense of logic. If it comes across an obstacleit gets momentarily confused. It has to think about what to do and where to gonext. Sometimes it throws a fit just like a real person.

The greatest problem, though, is cost. Themoney of the earliest research project was provided by the government, but thatmoney had dried up, and it’s not clear where future money will come from.Partly for that reason, and partly because of advances in safety, mining is notnearly as dangerous as it was in the past. Since 1990, fatalities have declined by 67% and injuries by 51% , according to theNational Mining Association.

Some experts predict that robots in mines willserve much of the same

function that they do in the automotive industry. Therobots will do the most boring and dangerous jobs, but won’t get rid of theneed for human workers.

(1)The latest robot is more advanced than Groundhog, mainly because ____.

A . it can map abandoned mines

B . it can see in the dark t unnels

C . it’s smaller than Groundhog

D . it has a real sense of logic

(2)We can infer from the text that __________.

A . the mining robots do most of the mining work at present

B . Groundhog can discover the presence of dangerous gases

C . experts are trying to make robots help miners with dangerous work

D . robots can do dangerous work in dark areas

(3)From the last paragraph, we know that __________.

A . robots in mines will serve much in the automatiove industry

B . there will be no need for human workers in mines

C . robots in mines will have a bright future

D . robots in mines will replace robots in the automotive industry (4)What can be the best title for the text?

A . Mining Accidents in America

B . Robots in Mines

C . Cave crawler, the Latest Robot

D . The Future of Robots
