第三部分阅读理解(30分)

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play an important role in the process (过程)of recovery from illness .

As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries (陈列室)and into public places, some of the country’s best-known artists have been called in to transform older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings . Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain , almost 100 now have precious collections of

contemporary (当代的)art in corridors , waiting areas and treatment rooms.

These recent initiatives owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience .

A typical hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week . What better place to hold regular exhibitions of art ? Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the out-patients waiting area of the Manchester Hospital in 1975 .

Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates .

The effect is striking . Now in the corridors and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colours , playful images and restful courtyards .

The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness . A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only brick wall to look at .

36. We learn that Peter Senior is _________ .

A. modern hospitals have lost a lot of patients

B. art is not enjoyed by a large number of people in modern society

The AIDS virus has been around for a very long time, but the spread of the disease within the last twenty years or so on such a scale has caused real concern. It seems that in the 1980s the principal carriers of the disease were homosexuals, drug users and prostitutes. Now it is becoming evident that heterosexuals also spread the disease, that children can be born with the virus and that patients in hospitals are being infected too.

Just as the WHO fought the spread of children’s disease throughout the world in the 1960s, so now they must again use education to fight this killer disease. The organization proposes to write newspaper articles and books, and to make videos and TV programmes. These will be translated into the major languages of the world so that as many people as possible can be educated about the danger of AIDS.

However, we are still faced with two big questions. Is educating the public enough if we are to control the spread of AIDS? Does the WHO have enough money and resources for hospitals throughout the world to help and care for sufferers? One fact is becoming clearer and that is that the WHO has not focused enough on the need to educate medical staff. There are still hospitals and health centers in some parts of the world which do not accept AIDS patients, while there are others where too little care is taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

46. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. AIDS is a disease for which a cure has been found.

B. AIDS is a disease which has just been found.

C. AIDS is a disease which has existed for a long time.

D. AIDS is a disease which spreads very slowly.

47. Who is easily infected with AIDS?

A. People who use drugs.

People who visit prostitutes.

Patients who stay in hospital.

All of the above.

In WHO’s opinion, what will help most e ffectively in fighting against the spread of

More education.

More medicines.

More doctors.

More equipment.

From the passage, we can see that the writer is not happy about ____________.

the education the general public get on AIDS

the education the medical staff get on AIDS

the TV programmes on AIDS

the newspaper articles on AIDS

Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?

It is not enough only to educate the general pubic.

There are some hospitals in some parts of the world which do not accept AIDS

Great care has been taken to prevent the spread of AIDS everywhere in the world now.

More money and resources are needed to control the spread of AIDS.

高二英语期末考试

第二部分(50分)

就文章主要内容提问题,并回答

What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be

useful in many jobs.

Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.

Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs wh en you handle tools, perhaps you are a poor speller or can’t add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

One possible version:

In the above cartoons, a young woman happily eats bananas and throws the peels on the street, unaware of the fact that such actions not only pollute the environment but also bring dangers to others. A disabled man struggles to properly pick up the peels she has left behind and put them in the dustbin.

In my opinion, despite the girl's beauty, it is the disabled man who is truly beautiful. Being well dressed is of great importance in keeping a good appearance. However, we should always keep this in mind: True beauty comes from one's actions . The old man is displaying a more beautiful virtue even though he is disabled , compared with the young girl.

While most of us enjoy pretty appearances, I think it is more important to have a clean and beautiful soul. Only such souls can create a beautiful society.
