Task 2

You are the sales manager of a big sports facilities store located near two campus universities. You are writing an email to a sports facilities supplier asking them to fill your order. It’s the first time that you deal with the supplier. (c.f. p33, Course book, 参照教材P33)

Task 3

Read the following case about Susan’s problem. How would you solve her problem if you were in her shoes?

·Write a proposal in the form of an email to Susan.

Susan, the Director of Human Resources at a large paper company, was leading a self-directed work team to implement a project in her organization. She was bumping into some resistance. “Most people are really excited about what we are doing,”she said. “But then there are the resisters. They don’t want to do anything with teams. Mostly, the resisters are people who have been here more than twenty years. Every time they come to a meeting, I already know what they are going to say. They simply don’t want to act.”

范文一

Dear Susan,

The problem you are facing is quite common in the workplace. Here I’d like to share with you my thoughts of how to get over it.

First, it’s absolutely essential that you find out why they don’t want to act. One way to do so is to put yourself in their shoes, trying to stand on their side. Then you may find the reasons are varied. Maybe it’s because those people of seniority are too contented with the status quo and don’t want to venture out. Or maybe your management style is not what they like, letting them feel no sense

of being respected or no sense of being valuable. Or it’s just they simply don’t think much of you as their leader as you are much younger than them.

Second, whatever the reasons are, communication is the key to the solution. So try to create opportunities to talk with the team, and especially to approach the team members individually. Find out the most influential members and the impossible ones, have open and frank discussions and above all, show them adequate respect. In communication, of course, you need to show patience, persistence, not to mention empathy.

The next important point is you should cultivate skill of leadership. Senior workers defying young leader’s command is an all-too-general phenomenon. When it comes to the problem of disobeying, the only solution to it is the power of the leader. In other words, older employees sometimes mess up your action just because they doubt your ability to lead. So why not show your assertiveness, your expertise in the project, and speak and act with authority whenever necessary.

Susan, I sincerely hope you can work out the problem soon.

Cheers

Tom

范文二

Dear Susan:

I’ve known what you have been puzzled by. It is a common problem on the way to becoming a good manager.

Your organization needs older workers more than ever. They transfer knowledge between generations, transmit your company's values to new hires, make excellent mentors for younger employees, and provide a "just in time" workforce for special projects.

But they don’t obey your commands. Then how to manage or deal with the relationship with them? Recognize that boomers' needs differ from younger generations and then adapt your management practice accordingly.

●Lead with mission: As employees age, they become more altruistic. Emphasize

the positive impact of older workers' efforts on the world around them.

●Shoulder the responsibility: Divide them into several groups; let them lead a

group with young employees with full authority.

●Establish a system of rewards and punishment: Rewarding those groups that have

been doing a good job in team-working and have high work efficiency, as well as

punishing those unqualified quarterly or monthly.

●Forge social connections: Many older employees keep working to maintain social

relationships. Offer tasks that require interaction with others.

●Communicate frequently: Knowing what they are thinking about is a good way to

help solve the problem of management.

I hope these suggestions can be of some help to your problem.

Best regards,

Tony Lau

Exercise 1 With only two weeks to go before Christmas, buying presents is a high priority for a lot of people. However, this year not so many people are leaving their homes to go shopping. These days lots of people can do their shopping in the comfort of their own home with the help of the Internet. Online shopping is becoming more and more popular for a number of reasons: prices are often lower online; you don’t have to queue up in busy shops and you can buy almost any product imaginable with just a few clicks of your mouse. Exercise 1 College pays off financially. A wide range of statistics shows the economic advantage of a four-year college education. Over a lifetime, students who graduate from college can expect to make about 60% more than those who do not, well over a million dollars more than they would otherwise. But what about the benefits of college that are more difficult to measure? They are equally significant and add up to a lot of value over the course of a lifetime: College takes students to places they’ve never been to before. College is a passport to different places, different times, and different ways of thinking —from learning new languages to considering the development of human history to diving deep into the building blocks of matter. It gives students a chance to understand themselves differently, seeing how their lives are both like and unlike those who populated other eras(时代))and other lands. College introduces students to people they've never met before. One of the most important ways in which students learn, at colleges and universities everywhere, is by interacting with people who are different from themselves both inside and outside the classroom. Students learn more at a place full of engaging people with a wide range of viewpoints. In these ways and in so many others, college helps students see themselves differently, giving them the room and the license to imagine new possibilities. Yes, it opens opportunities reflected in earning and employment statistics. But, perhaps even more valuable, it opens minds and worlds in ways that are beyond measurement. The value of higher education is symbolized by people who dream bigger and achieve more, who create their own futures and shape their own futures. 参考答案: According to statistics, college makes a great difference to students’ earning power,(要1) while it also contributes to other valuable aspects beyond assessment in life.(要点2) Firstly, college motivates students’ self-realization through various learning activities.(要点3) Secondly, it shapes students’ diverse perspectives by encouraging them to communicate with different

summary writing(原文及范文) Writing Directions: For this part, you are to write a summary of either of two articles that are presented to you in the following. Your summary should be 150-200 words. Remember to write neatly. Science and Humanity The twentieth century saw more momentous change than any previous century: change for better, change for worse; change that brought enormous benefits to human beings, change that threatens the very existence of the human species. Many factors contributed to this change but—in my opinion—the most important factor was the progress in science. Academic research in the physical and biological sciences has vastly broadened our horizons; it has given us a deep insight into the structure of matter and of the universe; it has brought better understanding of the nature of life and of its continuous evolution. Technology—the application of science—has made fantastic advances that have affected us beneficially in nearly every aspect of life: better health, more wealth, less drudgery (单调沉闷的工作), greater access to information. Sadly, however, there is another side to the picture. The creativity of science has been employed to the detriment(损害) of mankind. The application of science and technology to the development and manufacture of weapons of mass destruction has created a real threat to the continued existence of the human race on this planet. We have seen this happen in the case of nuclear weapons. Although their actual use in combat has so far occurred only in 1945—when two Japanese cities were destroyed—during the four decades of the Cold War, obscenely huge arsenals(武器库) of nuclear weapons were accumulated and made ready for use. The arsenals were so large that if the weapons had actually been detonated (爆炸) the result could have been the complete extinction of the human species, as well as of many animal species. William Shakespeare said: "The web of our life is of a mingled (混合的) yarn, good and ill together. " The above brief review of the application of only one strand of human activities— science—seems to bear out this adage (格言). But does it have to be so? Must ill always accompany good deeds? Are we biologically programmed for aggression and war? I am not an authority in genetics, but from my readings and life-long observation I do not see any evidence that we are genetically condemned to commit evil. On the contrary, on very general grounds I would say that genetically we are destined to do things that are of benefit to the human species, and that the negative aspects are mistakes, transient errors in the process of evolution. In other words, I believe in the inherent goodness of Man.

Summary Writing

In every simple statement or any formal dissertation, you can always find a summary. It is the part where the writer does a recap and states the highlights of the whole point that he/she is making. It is also where suggestions and recommendations are provided in order to give a clear view of the subject.Every discourse or essay parts is composed mainly of three parts. That is the introduction, the body, and the summary or the conclusion. As Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it, a summary is “a brief statem ent that gives the most important information about something”. It offers a better understanding of what is stated. What Is Summary Writing? Summary writing is the act or the formal writing process of creating or making a conclusion using a few words to highlight the most important information of an essay, speech, or other address. It is done by choosing the most essential elements that the writer has stated in the main body or main dialogue and try to present it briefly once again at the last part. This is an effective way of letting the readers recall and remember what transpired and make them think once again. A summary writing offers an opportunity for the writer to express any last and final words as takeaway for the readers. How to Assess Summary Writing To assess summary writing, you need to look at the essential elements and factors of a summary or a essay conclusion. The essential elements are the conciseness of the general statements, the effectiveness of how it was written, and the overall impact of the summary.

Summary writing Directions: Please read the following passage and write a summary of it in no more than 60 words. In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory (法定的) policy requiring companies to offer their normal pay will benefit the individual companies, the economy as a whole as well as the employees who decide to take the option. The shortened workweek will increase company profits because employees will feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they will make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work will be accomplished will not result in additional payroll cost(工资成本) because four-day employees will only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies will have fewer overworked and error-prone (容易出错的) employees for the same money, which will increase company profits. For the economy as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it will reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee can be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek will be better for individual employees. Employees who can afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time can improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities. _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ (60 words)

Exercise 1 A father’s relationship to his child’s current and future academic success and the level of his or her development in academic potential and scholastic achievement are both factors with some rather interesting implications that educators are beginning to study. As a matter of fact, “life with father” has been discovered to be a very important factor in determining a child’s progress or lack of progress in school. A recent survey of over 16,000 children made by the National Child Development Study in London revealed that children whose fathers came to school conferences and accompanied their children on outings did better in school than those children whose fathers were not involved in those activities. The study, which monitored children born during a week in March, 1992,from the time of their birth through the years of their early schooling, further revealed that the children of actively involved fathers scored much higher in reading and math than those children whose only involved parent was the mother. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the role played by fathers in the raising of a child. It indicated a much higher level of parental involvement by the father than had been anticipated. Over 66% of the fathers were said to have played a major role in parental responsibility. The study also suggested that the greatest level of parenting took place in the families of only child. As the number of children and financial expenses increases, the father’s apparent interest and involvement with the children decreased. However, no matter what the size or financial condition of the family,a father’s active participation in the child’s development made a definite difference in the child’s progress. The study further revealed that while the frequency of overnight absences reflected a corresponding deficiency of the child’s level in math and reading, a father’s employment on night shifts appeared to have little effect on the child’s academic progress. The information evaluating the level of the father’s parenting performance was taken primarily from the admittedly subjective observations of their wives. 参考答案:
