“Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way…” goes the popular Christmas tune. With the song in my head, I felt a bit sorry for myself. Instead of rushing back and forth across a freezing school campus, I could have had a cozy Christmas dinner at home or enjoyed the fabulous fireworks lighting up campus at night. But this Christmas would

not be celebrated as usual.

One month ago, all six girls in my dormitory(including me)had made detailed plans for a more-exciting-than-ever Christmas holiday. But one day we received an unusual mission:we were asked to organize a party that would be a fund-miser for mentally disabled children from the hospital. The children would perform on stage while volunteers offered food to the spectators(观众)and collect some money for the organization.

Naturally, we were supposed to support the idea wholeheartedly, and we did. But wait--the date of the show was set right on Christmas Eve! This meant that all our original Christmas plans would have to be set aside.

However, we took the plunge into preparations for the party. We spared no effort in organizing, designing, propagandizing, making contacts with the potential sponsors, negotiating and so on. We went through thick and thin and finally made it, though with a

bit of reluctance.

Finally, Christmas Eve arrived. As I dragged myself into the auditorium after another day of hard work, I detected the notes of a beautiful Christmas song that immediately filled me with happiness. I looked to find the source of the song-- it was a group of children singing onstage. Though disabled, they appeared extraordinarily earnest and sincere in front of the audience. Everyone attending was deeply moved by

the sight. People wanted to donate some money or show their support. The performers earned recognition and respect from all of us.

At that point, I found all that I had done in the one-month time was worthwhile.

And all the volunteers who had been participating in this Christmas party shared the same feeling: the true meaning of Christmas was giving and receiving love from one another.

56. The author thought her Christmas was unusual because _______________

B. she had a more exciting-than-ever Christmas holiday.

C. she saw performances given by disabled children.

D. she devoted herself to helping the disabled children.

57. Why did the girl believe their hard work worthwhile?

A. Because they had collected more money than they had expected.

B. Because the disabled children gave wonderful performances.

C. Because she had a new experience.

D. Because she had got the real idea of Christmas.

writer meant ________.

58. By saying “We went through thick and thin…”, the

A. they passed through a crowed of people.

B. they found various people, thin and fat.

C. they overcame great difficulties.

D. they did a lot of things—difficult ones and easy ones.

59. What would be the best title of the text?

A. Christmas on campus

B. Help the disabled

C. A wonderful Christmas

D. Get ready to help

B

How can you find out what is going on inside a person’s body without opening the patient’s body up? Regular X rays can show a lot. CAT scans(扫描仪)can show even more. They can give a plete view of body organs(器官).

What is a CAT scan? CAT stands for a kind of machine. It is a special X-ray machine that gets a 360-degree picture of a small area of a patient’s body.

Doctors use X rays to study and determine diseases and injuries within the body, X

rays can find a foreign object inside the body or take pictures of some inside organs to

be X-rayed.

A CAT scanner, however, uses a group of X rays to give a cross-sectional(横截面)view of a specific part of the body. A fine group of X rays is scanned across the body

and around the patient from many different directions. A puter studies the information

from each direction and produces a clear cross-sectional picture on a screen. This picture is then photographed for later use. Several cross sections, taken one after another, can

of the entire body or of any body organs. The newest CAT scanners give clear “photos”

can even give clear pictures of active, moving organs, just as a fast-action camera can giving clear pictures of what appears unclear to the eye. And because “stop the action”,

of the 360-degree pictures, CAT scans show clear and plete views of organs in a manner

that was once only shown during operation or examination of a dead patient.

Frequent appearance before X rays can cause skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body. Yet CAT scans actually don’t cause the patient to more radiation(辐射)than regular X rays do. CAT scans can also be done without getting something harmful into

the patient, so they are less risky than regular X rays.

CAT scans provide exact, detailed information. They can quickly find such a thing

as bleeding inside the brain. They are helping to save lives.

60. What is NOT true of a CAT scan?

A. It is safer than regular X rays.

B. It makes use of puter techniques.

C. It can stop the action of an organ for a short time.

D. It gives clear pictures of active, moving body parts.

61. The underlined words “a foreign object”(Para 3)most probably refer to _________.

A. a badly injured part inside the body

B. a new thing that is unknown to the doctor

C. a strange organ that has grown in the body

D. an object that gets inside the body by chance

62. What is the special use of the latest CAT scanners?

A. It provides clear photos of moving organs.

B. It can take 3-dimension(三维)pictures of inside organs.

C. It won’t cause serious skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body.

D. It helps to find out what is going on inside a person’s body without opening it up.

63. We can infer from this passage that _________.

A. patients in front of CAT may suffer form a bit of radiation

B. doctors need no opening-up of the body with CAT scanners

C. CAT scanners are more expensive than regular X-ray machines

D. CAT scanners can take photos of either the whole body or a part of it

C

There is much discussion today whether economic growth is desirable. At an earlier

period, our desire for material wealth may have justified. Now, however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems. Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much, too fast.

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world’s population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These proponents of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural resources from industrialization.

This debate over the desirability of continued economic growth is of great importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mention cannot be ignored. To find a solution, economists and business munity must pay attention to those problems and continue discussing them with one another.

64. According to those who argue against economic growth we must slow down for the following reasons EXCEPT that_______ .

A. our natural surroundings are in danger of being destroyed by industry.

B. the fixed supply of natural resources marks a point beyond which economic growth cannot continue.

C. the world population is ever increasing

D. more efforts should be made to improve the quality of our material life

65. We may infer from the context that “proponents” most probably means_______ .

A. arguments in support of something

B. disagreements

C. people who argue for something

D. people who argue against something

66. The passage is mainly about________ .

A. the contradiction(矛盾)between economists and business munity

B. the present debate on economic growth

C. the advantages and disadvantages of economic growth

D. the importance of the debate on economic growth

67. We may infer from the passage that________ .

A. the author describes the case as it is

B. the author is for economic growth

C. the author is against the continued economic growth

D. the author is very much worried about the problems caused by continued economic growth

D

I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand

in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓约) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here’s what I wanted to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure (休闲), it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking

it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems

to be the hardest lesson of all:

I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, pletely and totally. And

I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.

By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy

and passion (激情) as it ought to be lived.

68. The best title of this passage probably is .

A. Love your friends

B. Live a real life

C. Don’t waste time

D. Be a good mother and wife

in the fifth 69. By the underlined sentence “It is so easy to exist instead of to live”

paragraph, the author really means that people tend to .

A. make a living rather than live a real life

B. work rather than enjoy life

C. waste a lot in life

D. forget the most important lessons in

life

70. What’s the author’s attitude toward work?

A. Do it well to serve others.

B. Earn enough money to make

life better.

C. Try your best to get higher position and pay.

D. Don’t let it affect your real life.

71. It can be inferred from the passage that .

A. the author is a success in personal life

B. the author didn’t try her best to work well

C. the author spent all her time caring for her children

D. the author likes traveling very much

E

Wouldn’t it be great if you could just look up at the sky and read the weather forecast right away? Well, you can. The forecast is written in clouds. If you can read that writing, you can tell something about the atmosphere. With some practice, you can bee a pretty good weather forecaster. Who knows, you might even do as well as meteorologists.

Meteorologists use much more information than just the appearance of the clouds

to make their forecast. They collect data(数据)from all over the world. Then they put it into powerful, high-speed puters.

This does give meteorologists an advantage, because they can track weather patterns as they move from west to east across the country.

But you have an advantage, too. You can look at the sky and get your data directly.

A meteorologist uses a puter forecast that takes several hours to make a local forecast.

What are you seeing when you look at a cloud? “A picture of what moisture(湿度)is doing in the atmosphere, ”says meteorologist Peter Leavitt. There’s moisture throughout the atmosphere. Most of the time you don’t see it, because it’s in the form of an unseen gas called water vapor.

Sometimes, the temperature of the air gets cold enough to cause the water vapor to change to liquid water. That’s called condensation, and we see it happen all the time(for example, when damp air hits the cold glass of a mirror). When enough water vapor condenses, tiny drops form in the air. These drops spread light. A cloud is seen. Watching clouds over a day or two tells you a lot more than a single cloud about the weather to e. Changes in clouds show changes in the atmosphere.

You should begin to notice patterns. Certain clouds, following each other in order,

can signal a ing storm. But don’t take our word for it; see for yourself.

72. This passage mainly tells us about how to ________ .

A. bee a meteorologist

B. keep an eye on the weather

C. be an assistant to a meteorologist

D. change water vapor to liquid water

73. According to the passage, ordinary people might do as well as meteorologists in

weather forecast ________.

A. with the help of the high-speed puters

B. through a plex process of calculation

C. with simple practice looking up at the sky

D. asking for information from a weather station

74. Your advantage in weather forecasts is that ________.

A. you have more powerful puters at home

B. your brain works as well as a high-speed puter

C. you observe the sky and obtain your data directly

D. meteorologists give their data to you as soon as they get them

75. What causes vapor to change into water?

A. A lot of moisture.

B. Thick clouds.

C. Warm atmosphere.

D. Cold air temperature.

Text 10

People like to talk about “first”. They like to remember their first love or their first

car. But not all firsts are happy ones. Few people enjoy the firsts that are bad. One of history’s bad but important firsts was the first car accident. Cars were still young when it happened. It took place in New York in May 1896. A man from Massachusetts was visiting the city in his new car. At that time, bicycle riders were still trying to get used to

the new set of wheels on the road. No one was sure who was at fault. Anyway, a bike

and the car collided. The man on the bike was hurt. The driver of the car had to stay in prison and wait for the hospital report on the bike rider. It was lucky that the bike rider

was not killed.

Three years later, another car accident took place. It was again in New York City. A man named Henry Bliss got off a street car. He was hit by a passing car. Again, no one

was sure just how it happened or who was wrong. The driver of the car was put in prison. Poor Mr. Bliss became the first person to die in a car accident.

Hope you can e back to our city in the future.

I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing th in little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. 36.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Lady, are you rich? B.A story of Thanksgiving Day C.Don't forget how rich you are D.Does cups and saucers match well? 37.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.The girl thought the writer was rich just because she wanted to make the writer happy. B.The writer had thought she wasn't rich because her supplies were not expensive. C.If cups and saucers match well, they are a best pair even though cheap.
