Part II Reading(40%)

1

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the differences between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught_ to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle __ compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself , let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer to that problem is, whether or not this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exams, and marks. Let us throw them all out, let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn and how to measure their own understanding, and how to know what they know or do not know. Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learned at school and used for the rest of one’s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the world?” Don’t worry! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it.

According to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average weekly income for a woman in 1983 was $ 260. For the same year, men had average weekly earning of $ 393. For some people, these figures are clear evidence that there is still sex discrimination in the area of pay in the situation, we find that certain occupations seem to be primarily female while others seem to be primarily male occupations. In the medical and legal professions, for example, statistics show that 85% of all doctors and lawyers are men ( although this situation is changing). More than 90% of all engineers are men. Women, however, have been the majority for a long time in other occupations. For example, 99 out of every 100 secretaries are women, and 95% of all nurses are female. From these statics, it is clear that women tend to enter certain occupations and not others, The occupations which they enter are often in service industries and often have one common feature: : They do not pay well. It can be argued that this is the principal reason for the difference in earnings between men and women. In addition, we can expect the pay situation to change in the future, because more qualified women are beginning careers in medicine, law, business, scientific research, and engineering.

A. Jobs as doctors and lawyers.

B. Jobs in service industries.

C. Jobs in areas without sex discrimination.

B.There is still a difference between the earnings of men and women.

C.The difference between men’s pay and women’s pay will become larger and larger.

D.Women and men will exchange their jobs in most areas.

28.In the opinion of the writer, why do women still earn less money than men?

A.Some professions are not suitable for women.

B.The principle of “ equal pay for equal work” isn’t observed.

C.It is very difficult to change people’s attitude towards the roles of women.

D.Women are often in the majority in low-paying jobs.

29.According to the passage, what can we expect in the legal profession in the future?

A.There will be more male lawyers.

B.The number of female lawyers will increase.

C. The salaries of female lawyers will increase.

D.Male and female lawyers will get equal pay.

30.What is the author’s attitude towards the U.S. bureau of Labor Statistics?

In most people the left side of the brain deals with such things as logic, language, reasoning,

numbers, and analysis, the so-called” academic” activities. While the left side is engaged in these activities, the right side is in the “ alpha wave” or resting state. The right side if the brain deals with rhythm, music, visual imagines and imagination, color, parallel processing, day-dreaming, face recognition, and pattern or map recognition.

Research showed that when people were encouraged to develop a mental area they had previously considered weak, this development, rather than detracting from other areas, seemed to produce an effect in which all areas of mental performance improved.

At first glance history seemed to deny this finding, for most of the “ great brains” appeared very irregular in mental terms: Einstein and other scientists seemed to be mostly”left-brains”dominant, while Picasso and other artists and musicians appeared to be “ right_brain” dominant.

A more thorough investigation, however, discovered some fascinating facts: Einstein failed mathematics at elementary school, but numbered, among his other activities, violin playing, art, sailing, and imagination games.

Einstein gave credit to his imagination games for many of his more significant scientific insights. While day-dreaming on a hill on a summer day, he imagined riding sunbeams to outer space, and upon finding himself returned, “illogically”, to the surface of the sun, he realized that the universe must indeed be curved, and that his previous” logical “ training was incomplete. The numbers, formulas(公式) and words he wrapped around this new image gave us the theory of relativity__ a left and right brain combination.

Similarly the great artists turned out to be “both-brained”. Rather than notebooks filled with stories of drunken parties, and paint splashed on randomly to produce masterpieces, a good example of just how an artist works was found as follows:

Up at 6 a.m. Spent seventeenth day on painting six of the latest series. Mixed four parts orange with two parts yellow to produce color combination which I placed in upper left-hand corner of canvas, to act in visual opposition to spiral structures in lower right-hand corner, producing desired balance in eye of the perceiver.

When I was studying at Yale, some phenomena puzzled me greatly. I found that Chinese students

or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.

I was impressed by the role of the professor in the seminar(讨论会). The professor didn’t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a researcher looking for answers to questions together with the students. One linguistic(语言的) feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal(情态的) verbs—far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said, “This is my personal opinion and it could be wrong.” or “You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.”

In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct reactions. Therefore, students always expect the professor to give an answer to the question. I still remember how frustrated they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than that of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they were sure about it.

Education in China is valued for united thinking. I remember American teachers who taught in our university complaining about the fact that Chinese students uniformly expressed the same idea in their English composition. The examinations in America usuall y do not test a student’s ability to memorize the material but his ability to analyze and solve problems. Education in America is valued not only as a means to obtain employment but as a process of enhancing critical thinking.

36.In the USA, when the students are in class, ____. DACDC

B. He holds that the major purpose of Chinese teaching methods is to improve students’ remembrance.

D. He holds that American teachers hate to give a test.

After a while the Dutchmen saw that the two Belgians only had one ticket between them and asked how they managed to achieve this. The Belgians explained that when they heard the conductor approaching from the other end of the carriage, the two of them left their seats, went into the toilet and locked the door. When the conductor knocked on the toilet door, saying, "Tickets, please!", they pushed one ticket under the door. It was then stamped and pushed back under the door again. The Dutchmen thought this was a very good idea and the following morning bought one ticket between them. When they got to their carriage there was only one Belgian. They told him what they had done and asked the Belgian if he had a ticket as he was traveling on his own. The Belgian said he did not have a ticket at all and when they asked how he proposed to manage to travel free of charge, he told them they would have to wait and see until the conductor arrived, but he had no doubt that he would manage it without difficulty. As soon as they heard the conductor coming, the two Dutchmen immediately went to the toilet and locked the door. A few moments later, the Belgian followed them down the corridor and knocked on the toilet door, saying, "Tickets, please!" One ticket appeared under the door. Questions: 1. Where did the story take place 2. What did the two Dutchmen want to know from the two Belgians 3. How did the Dutchmen feel about the Belgians' behavior 4. What did the Belgian do when asked if he had a ticket 5. I work as a salesclerk in a big department store in Fuji, Japan. Six years ago when I was 21 years old, I went to California to attend college. Life in the United States was much more difficult than I had ever imagined. It wasn't like the descriptions I had read in my textbooks. People often seemed tense and so I felt very alone. One of my hardest classes was physical education. We often played volleyball. All the other students were good at it, but I clearly wasn't. One afternoon, the teacher asked me to hit the ball to my classmates. For most people, this would be easy but I was terrified that I would make a fool of myself. When one of the boys on my team saw how nervous I was, he walked up to me and whispered, "Come on, you can do that." You can't imagine how those words of encouragement made me feel. I was so happy that I almost cried. I managed to hit the ball and I think I thanked the young man, but I'm not sure. I have never forgotten his kind words of encouragement. He probably doesn't even remember what he said to me or how much his kindness meant to me. Whenever things aren't going well, I think of those simple words of encouragement: Come on, you can do that.
