There was something funny about my shoes. They were blacker than they had been

since they were bought. But now could that be?

My first thought was, of course, magic because I knew that I hadn’t done anything to create that shine that looked so wonderful at the far end of my legs. Then, I called out to my wife, Anita. “Honey, thanks for shining my shoes! They look great!

I was thinking I needed to get some new black shoes, but now...”“I didn’t shine your black shoes,”Anita said. “I didn’t shine your brown shoes, either.”Wait a minute. My brown shoes? I looked in the closet. A bright glow from the darkest corner confirmed Anita’s report. I paused for a second or two. “So really, thanks,” I said to Anita. “But I didn’t shine them,” she said.

I looked at her, searching for any sign of telling lies. Anita certainly wouldn’t lie, but she would do a bit in the interest of something she considered a greater good--a good joke or a secret act of service. “So, if you didn’t shine them,” I asked, “who did it?” She gave me a confident, self-satisfied smile. So I immediately thought of Beth, my youngest daughter who lived close enough to be able to drop by when I wasn’t home to shine my shoes. But her response to my questions forced me to decide that it wasn’t Beth. Who was it?

To be honest, I still don’t know for sure. That’s why it is with unknown acts of service. I love my shiny shoes. They are finally going to get dirty again. But the memory of those shiny shoes will remain with me, warming my heart forever, and inspiring me to fast acts of kindness of my own.

deeds secretly.

B.

Many people love cats because they serve as excellent human companions. Furthermore, they also help in hunting and controlling the number of some unwanted creatures and pests. Also, these gentle pets have unique behavior that makes them very interesting and endearing to many people.

They typical weight for this kind of animal is somewhere around 2.5 kilograms up to 7 kilograms. In terms of height, the average cat can grow as tall as 23 to 25 centimeters. Compared to other animals, they tend to sleep more as a means of

According to animal experts, female cats also do such act when giving birth. Nursing cats also use this kind of sound to communicate with their kittens. When communicating with people, feline creatures usually purr in order to show love and express friendship. Moreover, purring cats are sending people signals that they are not posing any kind of threat.

Aside from the positive meaning of purring, it can also mean something bad for cats. Some studies show that cats create such sound when they are in pain, ailing or injured. Worse still, this can even serve as a signal that they are about to die.

In addition to purring, these creatures also produce other important sounds for the purpose of communication. These include grunting, squeaking and trilling. They also produce other sounds such as growling, hissing and meowing.

A In 2012, I had just recovered from a serious illness when I received an invitation to a writer's conference in Orlando, Florida. My family persuaded me that a holiday might be just what the doctor ordered, so off I went . Arriving in the Sunshine State was not easy , but I managed to catch a taxi to the hotel. The next morning, I caught another taxi to do some shopping. Later I went to a cafe to buy some lunch, but having my sandwich and drink in my hands , I saw that all the tables were occupied (占用) . Then I heard a friendly voice saying, "You can share my table." I gratefully sat down with the smiling elderly lady and we shared a happy lunch together. As the meal drew to a close she asked how long I would be in Orlando. I had already told her that I hadn't hired(租用) a car, and hadn't realised how costly taking taxis would he, After a while she said, "My dear, don't use any more taxis. I'm retired and it would be my pleasure to drive you wherever you wish." I told her that I couldn't put her to that trouble , but she insisted. She asked me where I was staying and the next morning she drove me to Disney World. She took me through the park’s gates and spent some time with me before leaving me to explore alone. At the end of the day, she returned to take me back to my hotel. The next few days, she droved me around Orlando’s tourist areas. I offered her money but she refused to take any. When we had lunch on my last day, I thanked her for her kindness. I'll never forget that wonderful lady who filled my holiday in Florida with wonderful memories. 1 The author went to Orlando to __________________________. A see a doctor B attend a meeting C meet a friend D visit a family member 2 What did the elderly lady do? A She offered her seat to the author. B She helped the author hire a car. C She drove the author to a park. D She bought the author a lunch. 3 We can infer from the text that the elderly lady is __________________. A hard-working B good-looking C well-known D kind-hearted. B What you communicate through your body language and nonverbal(不用语言的) signals affects how others see you , how well they like and respect you, and whether or not they trust you .Unfortunately ,many people send confusing nonverbal signals without even knowing it. Jack , Ted and Arlene are all speakers who have got disastrous(灾难性的) results while communicating with others. Jack believes he gets along great with others, but if you were to ask any of them, they would say that Jack makes them feel afraid. Rather than just look at you , he seems to eat you with his eyes. And he often shakes your hand so hard that it hurts. Jack is a caring guy who secretly wishes he had more friends , but his nonverbal awkwardness(笨拙) keeps people at a distance. Ted is good -looking, hard-working, and a smooth talker, but he seems to care more about his thoughts than others. When someone has something to say, Ted’s wild eyes make him look like he wants to speak before they have finished . His inability to listen to others make him unpopular with many people. Arlene is funny and attractive , but even though she keeps laughing and smiling , she looks nervous. Her shoulders and eyebrows are noticeably raised, her voice is high, and his body is stiff(僵硬的) . Being around Arlene makes many people feel uncomfortable. These smart, well-intentioned people try their best to connect with others . The sad thing is that they have no idea of the nonverbal messages they communicate. If you want to communicate effectively ,avoid misunderstandings , and enjoy trusting relationships , it’s important to understand how to use body language. 4 What’s the problem with Jack? A He can’t keep a secret. B He behaves improperly(不合适的). C He hates making friends. D He means to frighten others. 5 What do people think about Ted? A He is caring B He is interesting C He is not a good listener D He is not a smooth talker 6 How is the text mainly developed? ABy using examples. B By giving instructions. C By presenting findings. D By providing explanations. 7 What’the main idea of the text? A How to read body language. B How to improve body language. C Types of nonverbal communication. D Nonverbal communication in relationships.
