第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Kyle MacDonald had a red paper clip (回形针) and a dream: Could he barter that

paper clip for something better, and trade that thing for something else—and so on until he had a house?

MacDonald had spent years delivering pizzas and working other part-time jobs. He paid his rent by occasionally promoting products at trade shows. But he longed for a house, which he knew he could not afford.

He advertised it in the barter section of https://www.wendangku.net/doc/c67899865.html,. MacDonald said merely that he wanted something bigger or better for his red paper clip. No mention of a house.

While he was visiting his hometown of Vancouver, two women gave him a fish-shaped pen for the paper clip. Later that day, MacDonald headed to Seattle to catch a flight home. Before the airport, though, he stopped to see Annie Robbins, an artist who answered MacDonald’s posting. MacDonald left her home the proud owner of a small door knob.

Next up was Shawn Sparks, who was packing up to move from Amherst to Alexandria. Sparks offered MacDonald a camping stove. Sparks had two, and didn't want to carry both on his move. And he needed a new knob for his coffee machine. The men celebrated with a barbecue at Sparks’ house.

MacDonald gave the camping stove to an officer, getting a generator in return. MacDonald exchanged the generator for an “instant party package”. The beer package went to a Montreal DJ, in exchange for a snowmobile.

Now his blog, https://www.wendangku.net/doc/c67899865.html,, was attracting attention, and MacDonald was invited onto Canadian television. Our wandering man was asked if there was anywhere he wouldn’t go to trade the snowmobile. He said: Yahk (a small village in the Rockies).

A snowmobiling magazine offered an expense-paid trip to Yahk in exchange for the snowmobile. The trip went to Bruno Taillefer, manager for a supply company. He got headquarters to let him give MacDonald a van that he had been planning to sell.

MacDonald gave the van to a musician. In turn, the musician, who works at a Toronto recording studio, arranged a recording contract. MacDonald handed the contract to Jody Gnant, a singer in Phoenix who owns a duplex (双单元住房).

And that is how Kyle MacDonald has turned a paper clip into a year of shelter in the desert.

Where it goes now, who knows? He says he has offers from Hollywood studios to turn his story into a film. Asked what he has learned from all this, he responded: “If you say you’re going to do something and you start to do it, and people enjoy it or

respect it or are entertained by it, people will step up and help you.”

21.How did MacDonald barter his paper clip for something bigger or better?

A. By traveling.

C. At trade shows.

D. Via the Internet.

22.When he left Annie Robbins’ house, MacDonald felt ______.

At first sight, Elana Schlenker’s pop-up store, Less Than 100, which was open in Pittsburgh during the month of April appeared just like any other gift store. However, when shoppers went to pay, they were in for a surprise. That's because while men paid full price, women received a 24% discount.

Though that may appear to be blatant (公然的) discrimination, Elana was merely obeying the store’s slogan “pay what you are paid”. And since women in the US get paid an average of 76 cents for every dollar men earn for the same job, it is only fair that they pay less.

As the store’s pricing policy was not enough to get the message across, Elana also distributed pamphlets(小册子). Entitled “What Are Women Worth?”, it explained the status of the wage gap both in Pennsylvania and across the country, and also gave women tips on how to better negotiate salaries. A 2015 study conducted by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research found that although the rate of women’s

income has been rising, men still earn more in every state in the country.

Though the Less Than 100 project will not resolve the wage inequality, it is a thought-provoking way to bring to the forefront an issue that is increasingly causing a lot of worry among women. Fortunately, Elana is not the only one trying to change the unfair system. Ellen Pao, appointed as the temporary CEO of Reddit, recently announced that new employees would be forbidden from negotiating salaries. She believes that men are better negotiators than women, and therefore, tend to receive higher wages!

What’s encouraging is that male CEOs are also joining the fight! Earlier this month, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff launched a company wide program to address the issue. Called “Women Surge” it aims to remove all gender-based pay inequalities, hire and promote more women and ensure that they are better included in meetings! With all these visionaries taking the lead, it will not be long before gender pay inequality is something we will only read about in history books!

24. Men had to pay more at Less Than 100 probably because _______.

A. the shop was operated by a young woman

B. they received more salary than women

C. the gifts in the store were very expensive

D. the owner of the shop didn’t like men at all

25. Elana handed out pamphlets to _______.

A. sell more goods in the store

B. seek more support from others

C. teach women to ask for more salary

D. beg for the customers’ forgiveness

26. Ellen Pao may agree that_______.

A. the wage system should be reformed

B. Elana does well in her jo

C. women don’t care about salary at all

D. men should get more salary than women

C

Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.

Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades after that the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern, though.”

Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my laptop and kitchen appliances yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a scary thought!

Professor Stephen Hawking warned a few months ago about the possibility that artificial intelligence could evolve and end up beyond human control. He suggested that machines could “spell the end of the human race”.

Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil or rebellious. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals; the destruction of people might be just additional damage. A machine would not take pity on you.

I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my vacuum cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants to take over the world!

27. We can conclude from Gates’ statements that __________.

A. he is embarrassed that he is afraid of robots

B. he doesn’t think machines are intelligent

C. machines should be fully employed

D. machines’ super intelligence should be a concern

28. The underlined word “spell” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to __________.

A. record

B. cause

C. explain

D. develop

29. Why are computers dangerous according to Nick Bostrom?

A. They are too evil and rebellious.

B. They are indifferent to humans.

C. They show pity on humans.

D. They are too clever and efficient.

30. What can be inferred about the author?

A. He doesn’t agree with Bill Gates.

B. He is not content with the present kitchen appliances.

C. He is scared about the super intelligence of machines.

D. He expects that machines will take place of humans.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

31 Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They cannot or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones. They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar

into the blood, etc. 32

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

33 They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “ 34 Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 35

A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

B. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

C. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.

D. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

E. Do not express your anger while angry.

F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

G. Anger may cause you cancer.

An English Writing Competition

第二节:概要写作(满分25 分)

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60 词左右的内容概要。

According to most people, after a long period of studying or working, we need to have a rest to refresh ourselves. However, that may not be the case. According to a recent report, you don’t need the break as much as you may think that makes you feel less tired.

Scientists have long assumed that willpower is a limited resource, which is why you feel the need to have a rest, have a snack and then get back to task when you are feeling better. They argue that the only way it restores willpower is by rest, food or entertainment.

But psychologists have challenged this theory, saying weak willpower is all in

your head. They have found that people’s belief in willpower determines how long and how well they’ll be able to work on tough mental exercise. “If you think of willpower as something that is not really used up, you can go on and on.” said Professor Veronika Job.

The researchers designed four experiments to test students’ belief in willpower. After a tiring task, those who believed, or were led to believe that willpower is a limited resource, performed worse on standard concentration tests than those who thought of willpower as something they had more control over. They also found that leading up to the final exam week, students who believed the limited resource theory ate junk food 24 percent more often than those who believed they had more control in resisting the temptation.

Mr. Job said, “The theory that willpower is a limited resource is interesting. Belief in willpower as a non-limited resource makes people stronger in their ability to work through challenges.”

The findings can help people who are battling against temptation. Willpower isn’t driven by a biologically-based process as much as we used to think. The belief in it is what influences your behaviors.
