第二部分:阅读理解(共25小题;第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题1分;满分45分)

第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

The last time Teddy Bacon saw his expensive gold watch, it was sinking down into the harbour in Gibraltar. That was in 1941, and the watch slipped off his wrist when Teddy Bacon threw a line to shore from his ship, HMS Repulse. After two divers failed to find his lost treasure, he gave up on ever seeing it again.

But 67 years later, it turned up at the door — still running. The Bulova Automatic, wrapped in a brown paper bag, didn’t seem at all the worse for wear after decades on the ocean floor.

The timepiece was discovered by the workers dredging (疏通) the harbour in 2007, who dug it up with other things. Because in 1941 Teddy Bacon made a log with a description of the watch and its approximate location, people there knew who it belonged to. So they posted it back to the address Teddy Bacon left for them on a piece of paper all those years ago. After being redirected from his many former homes it eventually landed at the door of his house in Tarvin, Cheshire.

“I wasn’t more surprised then,” said Mr. Bacon, a father of four who is almost 90. “It truly was a miracle (奇迹) that I could reunite with that watch after a lifetime. Now I wear it every day. It’s really excellent and I consider it a long-lost friend.”

Teddy Bacon bought the watch in the Azores for 55 dollars on his way to Singapore as part of a fleet sent to fight against the Japanese, and was wearing it in Gibraltar. He saw the watch slip off his wrist when he was showing one of the sailors how to throw a line to shore.

41. After Teddy Bacon lost his watch, ______.

A. he did nothing but wait

B. he believed the workers could dig it up

C. he left some information about his watch

D. he had been in search of it for many years

42. After staying in the water for 67 years, the watch ______.

A. wasn’t damaged at all

B. wore out

C. was wrapped in a bag

D. kept changing its location

43. What does the underlined part “The timepiece” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. The line.

B. The ocean floor.

C. The bag.

D. The watch.

44. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A. Mr. Bacon bought his watch in Gibraltar

B. Mr. Bacon had ever been a soldier

C. Mr. Bacon would keep the watch in his case

D. the watch would bring Mr. Bacon good luck

On April 10, 2008, scientists in Indonesia announced the discovery of a rare frog that has no lungs and breathes through its skin. Researchers believe that the little creature could provide some big clues as to how environmental factors can cause certain species to evolve (进化) so drastically (剧烈地) over time.

The frog was found in a remote part of the Indonesian island of Borneo during an expedition last summer. The unusual creature is the world’s first known lungless frog species. Only a few amphibians (两栖动物) share this unique quality.

David Bickford is a biologist at the National University of Singapore. He led the research team that came across the rare frog. “These are the most ancient and unusual frogs you can get on the planet,” he says.

Indonesian biologist Iskande r, a colleague of Bickford’s, first spotted the frog in 1978 and has been searching for it ever since. But no one knew that the frog lacked lungs until the recent lab studies were conducted.

Bickford says it’s possible that the frog may have evolved in o rder to adapt to the cold, fast-moving, and oxygen-rich streams in which it lives. The biologist adds that this “extreme adaptation” was probably necessary to reduce the frog’s ability to float. That way, it could keep itself from being swept down the mountainous rivers.

Scientists say that the new discovery has made it even more critical to protect the frog’s river habitat. In the last few years, illegal logging (伐木) and gold mining have caused the once-clean waters to turn brown with pollution.

“The gold mining is completely illegal and small-scale,” Bickford says. “But when there are thousands of them on the river, the frogs will have to run out of the

river.”

49. The frog is unusual most probably because _____.

A. it has no lungs at all

B. it doesn’t use its lungs to breathe

C. it’s the world’s first lungless species

D. it can breathe either through its lungs or its skin

50. What might make the frog as it is today according to the passage?

A. Illegal logging.

B. The gold mining.

C. Its living conditions.

D. Changes of the climate.

51. When did the scientists discover that the frog has no lungs?

A. In 1978.

B. Not long before April 10.

C. On April 10, 2008.

D. Before the expedition last summer.

52. What does the author want to tell us from the last two paragraphs?

A. Industrial waste is the main source of water pollution.

B. The frog must improve its ability to float.

C. The frog will have to live on land.

D. It’s high time to protect the frog’s habitat.

The World History of Science Online (WHSO) is a relatively recent project with a goal of creating a website where researchers can access bibliographical (书目的) information related to history of science around the world. It is a project of the Division of History of Science and Technology of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science. Initiated (发起) by the Secretary General, Juan José Salda, WHSO was put forward at a meeting of experts in Paris in 2003. It received much support from many international organizations.

This spring a governing board was established along with a formal organizational structure. Stephen P. Weldon agreed to chair the governing board, which also includes

representatives from Australia, Brazil, France, India, Japan, and the UK. This global project is quite ambitious and it is still in its early stages. One quickly realizable goal will be to make sure that the website provides continually updated information about major online tools for researchers. A central aspect of WHSO is to promote bibliographic and archival (档案的) work that can be integrated (整合) with a web-based search engine. To that end, a Commission on National Bibliographies was created that will be working to find ways to locate and promote such work through volunteer efforts. There are plans to hold a meeting sometime next year that will bring people together to work on both the technical and human aspects of the problem. The goal is to have an integrated search engine functioning on a basic level with some main data set within a couple of years.

The great value of this project is that it starts trying to solve one of the most serious problems faced by the international history of science community — the lack of access by scholars in developing countries to first-rate scholarly tools, like those many of us in the West take for granted. This inequality even exists in wealthy Europe. With the great increase of web-based tools and online data and with the increasing access to the Internet around the world, we may hope that WHSO will become a major resource for scholars worldwide.

53. One of WHSO’s aims is to _____.

A. provide a platform for researchers to communicate

B. offer researchers bibliographical information

C. offer courses on history of science

D. provide researchers with fund

54. What does the underlined part “such work” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The establishment of a governing board.

B. The update of the latest information.

C. The bibliographic and archival work.

D. The cooperation with other international organizations.

55. What’s the significance of the project?

A. It will provide researchers in developing countries with first-rate research tools.

B. It will include representatives from all over the world.

C. It will promote the development of developing countries.

D. It will mainly benefit the western countries.

56. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. All the developed countries have access to first-rate research tools.

B. WHSO was established last spring.

C. Experts from developed countries make up the governing board.

D. The project will have a bright future.

Parents are only humans, and they can feel offended when their views are ch allenged. So what can you do to get your points across in a way that doesn’t turn ugly? Remember this motto: Disagree without disrespect.

Using respectful language and behavior in your everyday interactions is important. Resist the temptation (诱惑) to yell at or put down your parents, and you’ll have a much better chance of getting what you want.

Nonverbal (非言语的) actions reinforce (增强) respectful language and show that you mean what you say. If you’re helpful and considerate toward family members, teachers, or coaches in your everyday actions, it demonstrates respect and helps establish a foundation for those times when you may disagree. Plus, acting respectfully demonstrates maturity. Parents are more likely to think of their children as grown-ups —and, as a result, capable of making more important decisions —when they see them acting maturely.

If your parents just don’t seem to be on the same track as you, try these tips for disagreeing constructively:

Don’t make it personal. If you get upset, try to remember you’re mad at the idea or concept your parent or another adult is raising, not the person.

Avoid putting down your parents’ ideas and beliefs. Instead of saying “That’s a stupid idea”, try “I don’t agree, and here’s why.”

Use “I” statements to c ommunicate how you feel, what you think, and what you want or need. Using “you” statements can sound argumentative. For example, telling your mom or dad, “You always remind me about my chores on Wednesdays when you know I have a lot of homework” has a very different tone from “I’m feeling pressured because I have a lot of homework tonight. Can I do those chores tomorrow?”

Listen to the other point of view. Doing so makes it more likely that a parent or adult will listen to yours.

57. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. It is no easy task to express disagreement.

B. Respecting others means agreeing with others.

C. Expressing disagreement is disrespectful.

D. Show respect when expressing disagreement.

58. If you show your respect in your everyday actions, your parents will think _____.

A. they are too old to teach you

B. you are old enough to make your own decisions

C. their beliefs are being challenged

D. you are setting an example for them

59. Which of the following is a good example to express your disagreement according to the passage?

A. I am very tired now. Shall I do it later?

B. You make me nervous. Can you speak less?

C. I don’t believe you at all.

D. You always forbid me to watch TV.

60. The passage is mainly about ______.

A. how to show respect for your parents

B. how to win the respect of your parents

C. how to express your disagreement with parents

D. how to deal with your strict parents

Nowadays, with more attention paid to education, more private schools have been set up. Most of these private schools provide good learning environment for students.

However, they also bring about some problems.

These schools usually charge students very high tuition fees, which are more than what an ordinary family can afford. Thus, many excellent students are rejected just due to lack of money.

I don’t think it is good to run schools in this way. The pu rpose of education is to develop students’ talents and interests. Schools should be different from companies which aim to make profits. They should recruit all the outstanding students regardless of their financial conditions.
