It was a hot morning when I started my flight training. Nearly two hundred of us stood at attention. We were very excited that on this day, we would finally begin the “hands-on” part of flight training. We had been through thirteen tough weeks of basic training.

That morning, we were delighted to wait for the moment to climb into the training plane to actually begin learning to fly. Each of us was convinced that we would soon fly “above the best”.

As we stood facing the officers, waiting for instructions, a tiny bird jumped out in front of us. It seemed confused and a little frightened. Suddenly, its mother flew over, as if encouraging it to fly. Everyone’s eyes followed the birds. Even our officers turned to watch, mesmerized by the scene.

Over and over, the tiny bird ran as fast as its little legs could move, but it still failed to fly into the sky no matter how hard it had tried.

Completely ignoring the crowd of staring bystanders, the mother bird went on flying to and encouraging her little bird. All two hundred of us watched breathlessly. Each time it made its way across the grass in front of us, we sighed at its failure.

Finally, after we had stood at attention for what seemed like hours just watching, those tiny wings could fly at last. You could almost see the little bird feel very proud. Then, we burst into wild cheers. We watched, as the little bird followed its mother to fly into the sky. Our officers

turned back to us, smiling. We learned a lot from the little bird.

21. Why was the author excited before his flight training?

A. Some birds would accompany him during the training.

B. His outstanding ability to fly would be proved soon.

C. He would begin to get practical experience on planes.

D. There would be no boring basic training any more.

22. What does the underlined word “mesmerized” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. attracted.

B. touched.

C. influenced.

D. puzzled.

23. What did the author learn from the experience?

A. Keeping practice can make a person braver.

B. One should not give up when meeting with failure.

C. The young must be modest to learn from the old.

D. Nothing is more important than mother’s love.

24. What can be the best title for the text?

A. My Exciting Experience

B. Strict Flight Officers

C. A Strong-minded Bird

D. The Best Flight Lesson

B

It is common to have difficulty sleeping during the day. Humans usually sleep best at night and are awake during the day. However, modern work schedules require some people to try to get used to the unnatural schedule of shift (轮班) work — being awake at night and sleeping during the day.

In order to make this adjustment, you need to pay special attention to your sleep environment and your preparation for sleep. If shift work is a necessary part of your work life, here are some suggestions that may help.

Arrange to sleep in a quiet, dark room. This means you may have to turn off your phone, hang dark curtains on the windows or wear a sleep eye mask, and train your family and friends to leave you alone while you sleep.

Fit in a nap (小睡). When your daytime sleep period is too short, taking a short nap of less than 30 minutes just before work or during a break has been shown to improve performance.

Develop and follow a sleep routine(常规). It’s best if you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Try not to vary this too much on weekends. Your body likes routine.

Take extra care to make healthy choices. You may have a desire to reach for unhealthy foods to stay awake or alcohol to try to sleep. But these choices are more harmful than helpful.

If you have tried all these methods and are still having problems getting enough quality sleep during the day, talk to your doctor or a sleep specialist. Sometimes medications (药物治疗) may be helpful and safe. In other cases, there may be a potential sleep disorder.

25. The purpose of the text is to ________.

A. persuade workers to have a good sleep

B. advise night workers to keep healthy

C. encourage workers to do day work

D. help night workers to sleep well

26. What does the author recommend(推荐)?

A. A suitable amount of alcohol to help sleep.

B. A regular life on weekdays and weekends.

C. A dark room without phones to sleep in.

D. A break for sleeping anytime during the day.

27. On which condition should a person turn to a sleep specialist for help?

A. If he suffers from a sleep disorder for the first time.

B. If a good sleep environment is greatly needed for him.

C. If he fails to get quality sleep through his own efforts.

D. If he has the problem of failing to sleep in the daytime.

28. We can learn from the text that ________.

A. night workers need a long time to fall asleep

B. constant breaks at work help to improve performance

C. it is difficult to create a good sleep environment

D. night work requires people to adjust their body clocks

C

One of the biggest complaints I hear from people is that their friends just aren't there for them. More than that, sometimes friends are downright(完全地)rude or even mean. You can't change people, but you can surround yourself with more positive people. Here are some benefits that spending time with positive friends can provide.

With positive friends, you don't need to beg for help when you need it. Positive individuals want others to be happy, and will go out of their way to help you when you're feeling down. As https://www.wendangku.net/doc/cc11868905.html,'s Guide to Stress states, "Ideal friendships provide support when you're down, fun when you're up, wisdom when you're lost.”

Compare that to toxic friends, who might snipe(抨击) at you or even laugh at you behind your back. Negative people celebrate the downfall of others, and as a result you'll end up feeling worse about yourself or the situation you're dealing with. Friends who aren't positive will add to whatever amount of stress you are feeling.

Your positive friends will not only help you recover from negative hits you take in life, but they will also inspire you to be the best you can be. For example, perhaps you always wanted to be a writer. The negative people in your life will probably tell you all the reasons why you won't succeed. But who needs that? Chances are you have already gone over the reasons why you might fail and this is what has prevented you from trying. But with positive people in your life, you'll feel more comfortable sharing these types of goals because your friends will give you the emotional push you need to go after what you want in life.

You naturally attract the kinds of friends who are most like you. So if you're a downer, you'll probably find that negative people come to you. The same is true for being positive. The more you are able to maintain a positive attitude, the more like-minded people you'll attract in return.

29. Your true friends are probably those who _________.

A. you can change gradually

B. will not turn to you whenever in trouble

C. will stay with you when you're in need

D. are always polite and never waste anything

30. The writer mentions the statement of https://www.wendangku.net/doc/cc11868905.html,'s Guide to Stress in order to _________.

A. emphasize the importance of friendships

B. point out everyone may meet with difficulties

C. compare the differences between success and failure

D. explain to us what ideal friendships are in reality

31. By saying "The same is true for being positive", the writer intends to tell us that “________”.

A. It is true that everyone is positive in life

B. If you are positive, you'll attract positive friends

C. The negative people don't like the positive ones

D. The positive people would like to stay with everyone

32. Which of the following is conveyed in this article?

A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

B. Friendship is love with understanding.

C. Old friends and old wine are the best.

D. Positive friends can benefit you a lot.

D

Something in chocolate could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers.

Their study found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present.

The Imperial College London researchers who published their results online said the discovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is not necessarily harmful, it can have a major effect on the quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem,” said Professor Peter Barnes.

Ten healthy volunteers were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicine are stopping coughs.

The team found that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin needed to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they need only slightly higher levels of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo.

The researchers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a nerve (神经) activity, which causes coughing. They also found that unlike some standard cough treatments, theobromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness.

33. According to Professor Barnes, theobromine ______.

A. cannot be as effective as codeine

B. can be harmful to people’s health

C. cannot be separated from chocolate

D. can be a more effective cure for coughs

34. We learn from the text that volunteers in the experiment _______.

A. were patients with bad coughs

B. were divided into three groups

C. received standard treatments

D. suffered little side effects

35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

B. Chocolate May Cure Coughs

C. Cough Treatment: A Hard Case

Dear Susan,

I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble adapting to your new school life in America, but this situation can be easily changed if you take my advice.

Firstly, you should work hard at English, which can give you more opportunities to communicate with others. Secondly, why not make some friends? They can help you know more about America, and friendship can help you to forget your loneliness. Thirdly, it would be a good idea if you take an active part in all kinds of activities, which will help you to make your life more interesting. By doing this, you will be happier with your new life soon.

I hope you’ll find these ideas useful.

Yours,

Li Mei
