we are what we choose

as a kid, i spent my summers with my grandparents on their ranch in texas. i helped fix windmills, vaccinate cattle, and do other chores. we also watched soap operas everyafternoon, especially days of our lives. my grandparents belonged to a caravan club, a group of airstream trailer owners who travel together around the and canada. and every few summers, wed join the caravan. wed hitch up the airstream trailer to mygrandfathers car, and off wed go, in a line with 300 other airstream adventurers. i loved and worshipped my grandparents and i really looked forward to these trips.

on one particular trip, i was about 10 years old. i was rolling around in the big bench seat in the back of the car. my grandfather was driving. and my grandmother had the passenger seat. she smoked throughout these trips, and i hated the smell.

i have a vivid memory of what happened, and it was not what i expected. i expected to be applauded for my cleverness and arithmetic skills. jeff, youre so smart. you had to have made some tricky estimates, figure out the number of minutes in a year and do some division. thats not what happened. instead, my grandmother burst into tears. i sat in the backseat and did not know what to do. while my grandmother sat crying, my grandfather, who had been driving in silence, pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway. he got out of the car and came around and opened my door and waited for me to follow. was i in trouble my grandfather was a highly intelligent, quiet man. he had never said a harsh word to me, and maybe this was to be the first time or maybe he would ask that i get back in the car and apologize to my grandmother. i had no experience in this realm with my grandparents and no way to gauge

what the consequences might be. we stopped beside the trailer. my grandfather looked at me, and after a bit of silence, he gently and calmly said, jeff, one day youll understand that its harder to be kind than clever.

what i want to talk to you about today is the difference between gifts and choices.

cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice. gifts are easy -- theyre given after all. choices can be hard. you can seduce yourself with your gifts if youre not careful, and if you do, itll probably be to the detriment of your choices.

how will you use these gifts

listened carefully to me, and finally said, that sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didnt already have a good job. that logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final

decision. seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately, i decided i had to give it a shot. i didnt think id regret trying and failing. and i suspected i would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. after much consideration, i took the less safe path to follow my passion, and im proud of that choice.

tomorrow, in a very real sense, your life -- the life you author from scratch on your own --begins.

how will you use your gifts what choices will you make will inertia be your guide, or will you follow your passions will you follow dogma, or will you be original will you choose a life of ease, or a life of service and adventure will you wilt under criticism, or will you follow your convictions will you bluff it out when youre wrong, or will you apologize

will you guard your heart against rejection, or will you act when you fall in love will you play it safe, or will you be a little bit swashbuckling when its tough, will you give up, or will you be relentless will you

be a cynic, or will you be a builder

will you be clever at the expense of others, or will you be kind

how to improve our english good morning, ladies and gentlemen,! it’s really my great pleasure to be here. just now, off the stage, i was wondering if i could present well here, but now in the spotlight, i am not that nervous, and all i want to show you is my personality and confidence. at first, i will introduce myself. i am from class 4, grade 9. my name’s…. i like …my favorite subject is english. next i’d like to talk about “how to improve our english”. to be honest, i’ m really happy to stand here and say something about learning english, even if i’ m only a beginner of english. as everybody knows, english is an international language. what’s more, china has entered the wto. therefore it’s necessary for us to learn it. but you may ask how i can improve my english? well, i have some useful suggestions that i’d like to share(分享) with you. firstly, make sure that you pay enough attention to your pronunciation and intonation. otherwise, you might make yourself a laughing stock. for example,“can i use your bike?” if you say, “can i use your back?”“pass me the case, please.” you say, “pass me the kiss, please.” here you mispronounced the two words “bike”and “case”.that will certainly cause misunderstanding. besides, tones of different voice can also mean difference. for instance,“london bridge is falling down, falling down, my fair lady!” it means you are excited ! now listen again: “london bridge is falling down, falling down, my fair lady!” it shows you are so sad, right? secondly, practice makes perfect. don’t be afraid to make mistakes when you practice speaking english. on the one hand, you will learn from them, on the other hand, no one can avoid (避免)making mistakes, so don’t be shy, try to be brave and speak up ! spare time, you can watch some english movies. maybe you find it difficult to understand the voices, but it doesn’t matter. keep doing that, you”ll be able to follow later on . finally, in order to improve our english, we need to be patient . anyway, learning english takes time, so you must have a strong will and enough patience. remember: rome was not built in a day ! that’s all .thank you for your time.

In no time, I've put my heart into it so that I'll forget all the troubles. It's in this way that I've formed the habit of reading in any time. Little boys as I was, I was interest in picture books and storybooks. I was struck by them. No sooner had I entered the middle school than I began to read novel, plays, essays and so on. I found I could get much from them. Little by little I took great interest in literature and last term I won the first prize in the composition contest among middle-school students in Zhe Jiang. Reading “The Emperor's New Clothes”, I had to let out a burst of laughter over his fool. “The Little Match Girl” couldn't keep me from crying for her misery. “ Robinson Crusoe” took me into a strange world full of danger. And I was also deeply impressed by Helen Keller's patience and perseverance… Besides these, books also tell me other thing -how to be a man and how to tell the difference between right and wrong. In a word, good books can make me know what I didn't before. So I think of a good book as my best friend. I'll never forget this famous saying,“ Good books are best friends who never turn their backs upon us.” Have you ever learned English by watching English DVD movies? Is that an effective English learning method for you? Why? Watching English DVD movies is a very effective method of learning English. I learnt English at college at home. As a natural result of insufficient English speaking environment, my speaking and listening abilities were not developed satisfactorily, although my reading and writing abilities were quite all right. I remember my experience during a summer vacation when I made plans to watch 10 original English movies (I mean those not dubbed.) including the classic Casablanca, Rebecca, A Tale of Two Cities, and Little Women.

有关灾难的英语演讲稿 industrialization and environment pollution, some are likely pure natural that caused by earth geologic movements. Whatever it is, the point is when disaster strikes, what can we do ? There’s a saying I heard a long time ago, and it al ways stuck with me. “Plan for the worst, and hope for the best.” So the first step is to be well prepared. A lot can be done including developing the forecast system , learning common sense, taking emergency into account when constructing buildings to minimize the loss. The second point is about the post-disaster reconstruction. It is not only buildings and infrastructure, but also peoples hope and confidence that need to be reconstructed. The disaster, although tragic,is also a new begining. We have to start from scratch , but the cruel disaster makes us know more about love and interpersonal relationship. We know more about ourselves, and what is truly important to us. Disasters, as terrible as they are, often bring people

阅读与人生英文演讲稿 篇一:英语演讲稿-人生 Life Class 165 HeYi(何意) Good evening, Dear judges, ladies and gentlemen, my name is HeYi, I am from class 165, today I am very glad to give my speech here, and my topic is Life. As we know, life is precious and only one time for every person. So dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness lies for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around
