There are many important differences between human beings and animals. Perhaps one of the most important differences is that human beings have the ability to think, to make new ideas. Humans can do this because we have a well-developed brain. The brain allows Us to think, to invent an idea, and to remember it.

The brain has three main parts. Each part does a different task, so each part is equally important.

The cerebrum (大脑) is where you think, decide, remember, and feel. This is the large part on top. Under the cerebrum is the cerebellum (小脑). This part controls your muscles, so this part dictates your body movements. The third part, called the medulla (髓), controls a very important group of nerves. It is through these nerves

that messages pass from your brain to your body. The medulla does

not help you think. It tells the muscles in your body to work. For example, the medulla keeps you breathing, it makes your heart continue to beat, and it tells your stomach to digest the food that you just ate.

The human brain is a very complicated organ. Each of the three parts does different jobs, but actually no one knows for certain how the brain works.

Skin has two parts. The top part which we can see is called the epidermis (表皮). It is a very thin layer of dead skin. The body replaces this layer all the time. People lose about twenty kilos of skin in their life.

The inner layer of skin is called the dermis (真皮). The skin in this layer is living. The dermis makes new skin for the epidermis. In addition, the dermis has tiny oil glands (腺). The oil glands are important because they produce oil

After a long period of studies, scientists are uncovering surprising new findings about dolphins (海豚). They believe that dolphins do “talk”to each other, whistling “names” among themselves and others in their group. They help one another when in trouble. Like bats, they use sound waves to "see". Because of these and many other findings, many scientists now place dolphins among the cleverest animals on earth.

Dolphins love to mimic (模仿)- If we swim on our backs, they do too. If we dive, they follow. Once a trainer blew a puff of (一口)cigarette smoke against the window of an observation tank (观察舱), a young dolphin suddenly swam to its mother, nursed a moment, and spit out a cloud of milk against the glass.

It is even more surprising that dolphins are able to understand sign language. One of Herman’s dolphins .mastered more than 50 sign words. And they can also mimic the signatures of others. Now scientists are learning how dolphins “speak" to each other.

Dolphins help one another. When birth-giving takes place, females (雌

性)gather to keep off sharks (鯊鱼). Later, while the mother looks for food,, they take care of the young dolphin, swimming in a circle.

In October 1949, the United Nations brought a number of officials on food to Geneva to discuss the problem of eating habits and food supplies of peoples throughout the world. One problem that interested them particularly was a form of illness, about which little was known among the children in Africa and Latin America. Two doctors were chosen to make the study.
