Which English?

When you receive a phone call from a friend, how long does it take you to know who it is? A few seconds, perhaps. The quality of someone’s voice and their choice of words make a person instantly recognisable, even though you can’t see him or her. In this sense everybody's use of language

-whether English, Chinese, or any other-is different. You could say that there are as man y varieties of English, or any other language fo r that matter, as there are speakers of it. English is spoken as an official language in more than 60 countries across the world and it can s ound very different from place to place. Pronunciat ion, as well as grammar and vocabulary, can change very quickly from one area to another. For examp le, within London the most famous dialect is cockn ey. It is only usually spoken by people from the east of that city so it is not the only form of English you will hear. You can usually tell wh ich part of the English-speaking world someone come s from by their accent, and there are some very

recognisable accents all over Britain. It is also quite easy to tell British and American English ap art.

Although most people believe there is a right and a wrong way to speak English, there is not real ly a standard form that everyone can agree on. En glish spread across the world over hundreds of yea rs because of trade, exploration and business, and this process produced many different Englishes. Pr ofessors of linguistics, writers and teachers all w orry about providing a perfect model to follow but as it is so widely spoken, it has become imposs ible to say which English is “correct”and which is “incorrect”. Perhaps correctness doesn’t matt er-as long as speakers can understand each other -it’s communication that counts. Australia G’day!D’ya speak Strine? Or rather, Hello! Do you speak A ustralian? Australia is one of the youngest nations in the world. The first English speakers arrived little more than 200 years ago-and they didn’t want to. Most of them went prisoners sent there t o work. They came from all over Britain, but espe cially from Northern Ireland and

the London area, which is why the Australians acce nt today has traces of both Irish and cockney spe ech patterns. The

English speakers found people who had been living in Australia for more than 50,000 years -the Aborigines, and extraordinary variety of wildlif e, unique to the continent. Many of the Aboriginal words for these animals, such as kangaroo, koala and kookaburra soon passed into the language.

But the main differences between Australia English and other varieties of English lie in the individu al sounds and intonation patterns. Sometimes it is difficult for British and American people to unde rstand the Australian accent, and mistakes are comm on. A few years ago a well-known English author w as signing copies of his books in a Sydney booksh op. A customer came up to the author holding a c opy of the book and said Emma Chissit. The author thought that Emma Chissit was the woman’s name. B ut when he asked how to spell the name, in cas e the customer wanted him to write her name in t he book (To Emma Chissit, with best wishes), he r ealised that the customer had been asking the ques tion: How much is it? Jamaica and Singapore Australian English comes directly from English spoke

n in Britain. But in other countries where English is spoken as a first language this is not the case. The variety of English

spoken in Jamaica, and other Caribbean countries, has some of the grammatical features of the Afri can languages spoken by the ancestors of the Jamai can people, so that there is often no apostrophe s (’s) (that woman house, instead of that woman’s house) or no link verb or article (He good man , instead of He’s a good man). Another feature i s the rhythm. It is the rhythm of rap music, whi ch became popular in the US in the 1980s.

On the other side of the world, in Singapore, Eng lish is a second language, spoken by about half t he population. Other languages include Malay and Ch inese. Almost everyone in Singapore is bilingual, w hile some people speak three or four languages. Th e most common variety of English spoken is known as Singlish. Sentences in Singlish often end with the word lah. The variety has been influenced in particular by Malay and the Chinese dialect Hokkien (language spoken in Minnan), both in grammatical features and vocabulary. Today there is a debate i n Singapore about which variety of English is the best: Singlish, or a variety closer to British E

nglish, which is the aim of the Speak Good Englis h Movement created in 1999

The Future of English

Ever since the invention of the first telegraph at the end of the 19th century, English has been spreading around the world. It has a powerful in fluence in the media, on the Internet and in pop music that is not going to go away. This commun ication revolution has turned the world into a “global village”in which everyone needs to talk to each other -and so often nowadays that means in Eng lish.

More people now speak English as a second language across the world than as a native language. It is estimated that 1.3 billion people will use Engl ish as either a first or a second language by 20 50. But what will that form of English be like? Traditionally, British English has been taught acros s the world, but it is only one variety. Experts believe that the future shape and grammar of Eng lish, especially in its spoken form, will no longe

r be determined in the traditional English-speaking countries like Britain and America but in the re st of Europe, Asia and Africa. International organi sations

Module 1 Reading The City of the Future What will the city of the future look like No one knows for sure, and making predictions is a risky business. But one thing is certain— they are going to get bigger before they get smaller. In the future, care for the environment will become very important as earth's natural resources run out. We will use lots of recycled materials, such as plastic, aluminium, steel, glass, wood and paper, and we will waste fewer natural resources. We will also have to rely more on alternative energy, such as solar and wind power. All this seems certain, but there are plenty of things about city life in the future which are not certain. To find out what young people think about the future of urban life, a teacher at a university in Texas in the United States asked his students to think how they would run a city of 50,000 people in the year 2025. Here are some of the ideas they had: Garbage ships To get rid of garbage problems, the city will load huge spaceships with waste materials and send them towards the sun, preventing landfill and environmental problems. Batman Nets Police will arrest criminals by firing nets instead of guns.

必修1 第一单元ANNE’S BEST FRIEND Do you want a friend whom you could tell everything to, like your deepest feelings and thoughts? Or are you afraid that your friend would laugh at you, or would not understand what you are going through? Anne Frank wanted the first kind, so she made her diary her best friend. Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War II. Her family was Jewish so they had to hide or they would be caught by the German Nazis. She and her family hide away for two years before they were discovered. During that time the only true friend was her diary. She said, “I don’t want friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty.” Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place since July 1942. Thursday 15, June, 1944 Dear kitty, I wonder if it’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the song of the birds, moonlight and flowers could never have kept me spellbound. That’s changed since I came here. …For example, when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven one evening in order to have a good look at

Unit 1 Women of achievement Reading A STUDENT OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Africa. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family beings to wake up and move off. Then we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. However, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her babies play in the tree. Them we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as long as in a human family. Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observing and recording their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she first arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to begin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For example, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until then everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chimps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how chimps communicate with each other, and her study of their body language helped her work out their social system. Four forty years Jane Goodall has been outspoken about making the rest of the world understand and respect the life of these animals. She has argued that wild animals should be left in the wild and not used for entertainment or advertisements. She has helped to set up special places where they can live safely. She is leading a busy life but she says: “Once I stop, it all comes crowding in and I remember the chimps in laboratories. It's terrible. It affects me when I watch the wild chimps. I say to myself, ‘Aren't they luck?' And then I think about small chimps in cages though they have done nothing wrong. Once you have seen that you can never forget…” She has achieved everything she wanted to do: working with animals in their own environment, gaining a doctor's degree and showing that women can live in the forest as men can. She inspires those who want to cheer the achievement of women. Using language WHY NOT CARRY ON HER GOOD WORD? I enjoyed English, biology, and chemistry at school, but which one should I choose to study at university? I did not know the answer until one evening when I sat down at the

语篇提能 Ⅰ.阅读理解 Americans have taken over from the Indians many things besides their continent! Where did corn, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate and maple sugar come from? The Indians. Who invented moccasins, snowshoes and hammocks? The Indians! A list of the tools, plants, materials, and designs we owe to the Indians would include hundreds of items. But there is something far more familiar, something that is always at hand. It is used daily by every American: a large vocabulary of Indian words. Potato, tomato, chocolate, moccasin and hammock came into English from Indian languages. So did cocoa, tobacco, maize (an Indian word for corn) and succotash. Some words have changed on the way. Potato, for example, comes from a word that sounds like “batata”. Cocoa beg an as “cacahuatl”. Some meanings have also changed. The long Indian word from which succotash comes means “something broken off in bits.” Indian women often varied their dishes by mixing bits of one food with another. White men who ate an Indian dish of mixed lima beans (青豆) and corn began using the Indian word to mean this particular mixture. Put on your moccasins and take a walk in the country. If it is a cold day and you wear a mackinaw, your jacket will be as Indian as your shoes. But mackinaw came from “michilimackinac,” the Indian name of a place where a fort (集市) served as a trading post. Bright-coloured blankets or jackets bought at the post soon became known as “mackinaws.” Early white visitors to the continent found Indian words useful for the thin gs new to them. But some Indian sounds, such as the “tl” at the end of many words, were hard to say. That is why “coyotl” became coyote and
