II 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

第一节阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Can people in developing countries benefit from free trade? I quite think so. The most common advantage of free trade is fewer or no barriers (障碍) between countries. This allows a freer flow of labor and goods between member countries. As free trade agreements become more common around the world, the positive influence on developing countries has been considered as one of the greatest successes of them. There are several advantages for developing countries that take part in free trade.

As developed countries are able to move their operations into developing countries, new job opportunities open up for local workers. Increased levels of employment lead to a higher standard of living and more consumer purchasing (购买). This finally does good to the country's economy and may help to develop locally-owned businesses. As locally-owned businesses develop, more local people can find jobs there.

Child labor exists in developing countries for many reasons, but one of the main reasons is lack of technology. Free trade allows companies to spend more money on equipment and pay higher wages to adult workers. With higher family incomes, children are able to attend school rather than work.

Not only does free trade allow foreign-owned companies to establish themselves

in developing countries, it also allows native companies to sell to foreign markets. This is particularly true for small businesses in developing countries. These companies no longer have to worry about barriers to market entry and can sell their products freely.

An increase in employment levels and incomes in developing countries can lead to better medical care there. The final result is an increase in the average lifespan and a drop in infant(婴儿) deaths.

As is shown above, we can say that free trade really benefits developing countries.

Sharks use their good sense of smell to search for prey. But a new study shows that rising levels of CO2in the ocean could reduce sharks' ability to find food. It's bad news for a healthy ocean. Sharks are top predators (掠食者) and are like the ocean's weed controllers.

Dixson works at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Her earlier work has shown that clown fish in acidifying (酸化的) water act strangely. "We want to expand this research to sharks because we know how important it is for sharks to find their food through their sense of smell," says Dixson.

Her team started by placing sharks in each of three different pools for five days. Each pool had a different level of CO2 in it. The first had the same amount as today's ocean water. The second had a level of CO2 that scientists expect to see by 2050. The third pool had the highest level of CO2. That's a level that could develop by the year 2100.

Sharks weren't allowed to eat any food while in the pools. This made sure that they would be hungry. Then, Dixson released the sharks -one at a time - into a pool with two side-by-side streams of flowing water. In one stream, the researchers pumped water, in which a dead squid had been overnight. This water smelled strongly of squid. The other stream contained ocean water with no scent (气味). Because each stream flowed at the same rate and in the same direction, the squid smell stayed in its stream. The sharks could choose to swim in either stream.

Sharks that had been swimming for five days in. pools of regular ocean water spent more than 60 percent of their time in the squid-scented stream. The same was true for sharks that had been in water with the CO2 level that could develop by the year 2050. But sharks exposed to the highest level of CO2spent just 15 percent of their time in the squid-scented stream.

36. To begin with, the writer comes to a shark's smell and _______.

A. appreciates its ability to find food

B. considers it dangerous to human beings

C. tells us how to control weeds in the oceans

D. worries about the oceans where sharks live

37. According to Paragraph 2, Dixson's research_______.

A. is related to sharks

B. doesn't cover clown fish

C. has dealt with acidifying water

D. has covered sharks' smell

38. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A. What oceans in the future will be like.

B. Who helped Dixson conduct the study.

C. What kinds of pools were used during the study.

D. What the levels of CO2 will be at in the oceans in the future.

39. The researchers pumped water where a dead squid had been overnight to _________.

A. help the sharks look for food

B. test the sharks' sense of smell

C. prove that sharks like eating squids

D. explain why CO2 in the oceans affects sharks

40. To conclude, the experiment done by Dixson's team is more _________.

A. interesting

B. inspiring

Cameroon is experimenting with Africa's first mobile system to send a heart signal over a wireless network. The system will give much needed medical aid to heart patients in poor areas. Arthur Zang invented the device called the Cardiopad. He was just 24 years old when he invented it. The Cardiopad allows heart examinations to be performed. The results of the tests are sent wirelessly to experts in other parts of the country who can interpret them.

Simplice Momo is a 55-year-old heart patient in a poor area of the country. He says the device saves him time and money. It is too costly and difficult for him to see a heart expert in the city.

Cameroon has a population of about 22 million. But it only has 40 heart surgeons. Most are in the cities of Douala or Yaounde. Sometimes the heart experts needed can only be found outside the country. Now the device allows doctors to send patients' medical information to experts in Europe.

Arthur Zang started the Cardiopad project five years ago. Then, the young computer engineer needed more training and $45,000 to develop the device. His

family did not have the money. Banks would not give him loans. So he shared his idea on social media. The president of Cameroon, Paul Biya, provided him with money for the project. Mr. Zang also received free online training from an engineering school in India.

The Cameroon scientific community considers the Cardiopad extremely effective. The device costs about $4,000. The government of Cameroon has not been able to provide the device for hospital in need.

Mr. Zang says he has had private investors contact him. But he is more interested in investors who share his vision. That vision is not of money, but of better ways to help improve people's lives.

41. From Paragraph l, we can know that __________.

A. Cameroon is the inventor of the Cardiopad

B. the Cardiopad is a medical device to kill the pains

C. Arthur Zang is a wireless and heart expert

D. the Cardiopad can send heart examinations to faraway experts

42. How does Simplice Momo like the Cardiopad?

A. Noble and smart.

B. Cheap and convenient.

C. Easy to carry.

D. Hard to use.

43. In Paragraph 3, what is implied about heart patients in Cameroon?

A. They no longer worry about their health.

B. They often go abroad to receive treatment.

C. They no longer rely on heart experts in Cameroon.

D. They often receive treatment from heart surgeons outside Cameroon.

44. Arthur Zang shared his idea on social media to __________.

A. tell people about his creative idea

B. look for higher-skilled computer engineers

C. draw the attention of the president of his country

D. ask for more support to develop the Cardiopad

45. Arthur Zang is looking for investors who __________.

阅读下面短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

A new health report says that having a good network of friends helps you live longer during old age. The report also says that close family ties have little or no impact on longevity.

Researchers interviewed 1,500 Australians over the age of 70 about their social and family ties. Its aim was to know how economic, social and environmental factors impacted health and general well being over that age. Of the 1500 people who took

part in the study, those with close friendships were 22 percent more likely to live longer, and having regular contact with children and other family members had little or no impact on longevity.

Researchers suggest that friends are more likely to influence people's health behaviors such as seeking help for medical problems or quitting smoking. They also have a positive effect on people's mood, confidence and ability to cope during difficult times. They also suggest that feeling connected to a group of friends may provide purpose, which is important to the human condition.

基础写作(One possible version)

Last month, I did a survey on the problems that arise during the urbanization in developing countries. One of the problems is that the quality of the environment has greatly decreased and some large cities are suffering serious traffic jams. With urbanization, the number of unemployed people is on the rise and people’s living conditions are becoming worse and worse. To solve all the problems, as citizens, we should raise our awareness to protect the environment and more clean energy should be put into use. Besides, the government is suggested to improve the public transportation facilities and people’s living conditions, and meanwhile, more jobs need to be offered.

读写任务(One possible version)

According to new research, old people with close friendships live much longer than others and friends are more likely to influence people’s health behaviors, mood, confidence and ability to deal with difficult problems.

As the saying goes, a friend is one who believes in you when you have stopped believing in yourself. Everyone needs friends, because friends serve as one of the biggest supports in our life. After family, friends are those who care for you.

As a senior high school student, I think friendship is also important to me. A good friend can share my happiness as well as my sorrow when I am having difficulties in life. In addition, we can help each other and drive away our loneliness.

Of course, I will treasure my good friends. I will respect and trust my friends. When they are in trouble, I will give them a helping hand and encourage them as well.

A Sundays, I walk to the supermarket. Mother hands me the grocery list and puts money in my pocket, hoping it will be enough. She's had a hard day, and I've had a hard week. Nothing out of the ordinary happens when I get to the store. I grab the bread, some milk, and other things on the list. As I turn to head out, I see a beautiful dress in the window. I turn away, bitter that I could never own such a dress. Outside, I cannot stop thinking about that pretty dress. It's not fair that I can never have what I want. I work so hard to help my family and yet I get nothing in return, just another list to do. In my anger, I fail to realize the apples are rolling across the road. Suddenly, I see a pair of hands, offering me an apple. Looking up, I see the tanned (晒黑的) face of this stranger. His clothes are mismatched, borrowed or stolen. But his eyes are soft and kind. “Thanks,” I say. No other words are spok en as he continues to help me. I tell him “thank you” one more time and am on my way because I have many other things to finish. Suddenly, he says, “Have a good day, ma'am.” And then he gives me the biggest smile I have ever seen. Right then, he looks years younger — and I feel a fool.
