The NBA has 30 teams spread across the United States and Canada. Its super stars —such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry and James Harden —are international celebrities. The NBA, however, was not always such a big, successful league. In its first season (1946-1947), the NBA, known as the Basketball Association of America, or BAA, had 11 teams including such unfamiliar names as the Providence Steam rollers and Pittsburgh Ironmen. Slowly, the league grew with the help of certain star players. Some of the players who helped grow the NBA you may know, but others you may not.

George Mikan: Not fast or a great leaper, Mikan was an unlikely super star. He even wore glasses! But Mikan was big —6-foot-10, 245 pounds —at a time when NBA players were not as big as they are today. He was a strong scorer and rebounder who led the Minneapolis Lakers (later the Los Angeles Lakers) to five NBA championships in six years (1949 to 1954). Mikan was the league’s first big star and put the NBA on the map.

Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell: Chamberlain and Russell were the best big men in the NBA during the late 1950s and 1960s. The competition between these athletic giants got lots of fans interested in the professional game.

Chamberlain was a physical phenomenon. At 7-foot-1 and 275 pounds, he was almost unstoppable. Chamberlain scored a record 100 points during a game in 1962 and averaged more than 50 points a game during the 1961-1962 season.

While Chamberlain collected individual honors, Russell collected championship rings. Led by Russell’s rebounding and shot-blocking skills, the Boston Celtics won an

unbelievable 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons (1957 to 1969). Chamberlain’s teams managed to win only two championships.

Larry Bird and Earvin Johnson: They dominated the decade of the 1980s with Bird’s Celtics winning three NBA championships and Johnson’s Lakers winning five. Their teams met in three memorable NBA Finals that were shown on prime-time TV.

Michael Jordan: Even the youngest basketball fans know this name. With his high-flying dunks, Jordan led his Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships and became a worldwide salesman for such products as Gatorade, McDonald’s and, of course, Nike’s Air Jordan basketball shoes. Jordan, and others, helped make the NBA what it is today — a very big deal.

56. ______ was the first athlete to make NBA known worldwide.

A. Michael Jordan

B. George Mikan

C. Wilt Chamberlain

D. Earvin Johnson

57. What attracted people to NBA during the 1950s and 1960s?

A. The giants built up the fame of the NBA.

B. NBA Finals were shown on prime-time TV.

C. The stars did well both in NBA and business.

D. The best individual contrasted sharply with the best team.

Sometime in the past few years, the Cambridge, England–based novelist Ali Smith and the Norwegian Karl Ove Knausgaard had the same idea: to write a quartet (四重奏) of novels called Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. This month, Winter arrives in each series. But while Knausgaard engages in his signature blend (融合) of broad observations and too much thinking, Smith glares — at times sympathetically, at times unforgivingly — at a wasteland of a world where Brexit (脱欧) is possible.

It is not necessar y to read Smith’s Autumn before her Winter; while the two books share a philosophical style and a playfulness with words, they don’t concern the same cast. The characters here are the kind who find the winter holidays challenging, not comforting. Ashamed of his recent breakup, Art pays a young, foreign woman known as Lux to pretend to be his girlfriend during a visit to his mother Sophia. They spend their Christmas together in Cornwall, where the majority of voters supported Brexit —despite the fact that the poor county has received more than $1.3 billion in E.U. aid since 1999.

Winter pays frequent respect to A Christmas Carol, and Sophia is visited by her own ghost: a vision of a child’s head that follows her. Other ghosts haunt distant landscapes: “Refugees in the sea. Children in ambulances. Blood-soaked men running to hospitals or away from burning hospitals carrying blood-covered children.” Like many news watchers, Sophia has become accustomed to images like these. In a social

context of us vs. them, this book looks at the us and asks why we feel so little for them. “None of these things is happening here,” Sophia explains. “They are all happening far away, elsewhere.”

It’s a challenge to write a novel about a particular political moment— it threatens to become irrelevant. Smith has apparently tried to solve this problem in part by incorporating historical side plots that resonate (共鸣) with the present in both Autumn and Winter; here, it’s the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, where activists began protesting the site of a cruise-missile base in the early 1980s. She spins a fine story, but it feels shoehorned (硬塞进) in, and ultimately unnecessary.

The outlook at the end is dark, but soon enough Spring will come, and then maybe the threatening icicles (冰柱) will melt and the buds of hope will push through. Or perhaps the abundant foliage (植物) will simply cover up the scars made visible by the sparsity (贫乏)of cold midwinter.

P.S.

A BOOK FOR EACH SEASON Winter is the second in a series; Autumn was short-listed for the 2017 Man Booker Prize, and Spring is expected in 2019.

58. What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Both the English and Norwegian novelists are busy writing a series of novels of four seasons.

B. The Norwegian novelist has made broad observations about the novel Autumn.

C. Ali Smith shows sympathy to Knausgaard occasionally but doesn’t forgive him.

D. Ali Smith has a complex feeling when writing about the novel Winter.

A. The differences and similarities between Autumn and Winter.

B. The analysis of the main characters in the novel Winter.

C. The main plot and writing style of the novel Winter.

D. Sophie’s explanation of the social context of Winter.

60. How does the writer find Winter written by Ali Smith?

A. Winter is a nice story, though it has shortcomings.

B. It’s clever of Ali Smith to combine the past with the present.

C. The novel has negative effects on the political issue of Brexit.

D. All the problems in Winter are bound to be solved in Spring.

61. The following sentence “Nevertheless, Winter is a super meditation(冥想) on a complex, emotional moment in history.” should be put before ______.

A. Paragraph 2

B. Paragraph 3

C. Paragraph 4

D. Paragraph 5

C

We don’t choose our siblings the way we choose our partners and friends. Of course, we don’t choose our parents either, but they usually make that up to us by

sustaining us on the way to adulthood. Brothers and sisters are just sort of there. And yet, when it comes to our development, they can be more influential than parents. This holds whether they are older and cool, or younger and frustrating; whether we follow in their footsteps, or run screaming in the other direction.

Part of siblings’ sway (支配) has to do with their presence. Eighty-two percent of kids live with a sibling (a greater share than live with a father), and about 75 percent of 70-year-olds have a living sibling. For those of us who have brothers or sisters, our relationships with them will likely be the longest of our life.

Whether these relationships make our life better or worse is a more complicated question. On the upside, positive interactions with siblings during adolescence promote empathy, prosocial behavior, and academic achievement. This effect can be complicated by a full house, however. Kids with more siblings (a larger “sibship,” to use the industry term) do worse in school — although the universality of this finding has been challenged by studies of Mormons and the entire population of Norway.

When a sibling relationship is bad, however, it can be really bad —as in messing-up-your-life bad. Tense sibling relationships make people more likely to use substances and to be depressed and anxious in adolescence. Moreover, sibling bullying makes a kid more likely to engage in self-harm as a teen and to become psychotic by age 18. Whether a person models herself after her siblings or tries to distinguish herself has particularly important consequences. One study found that siblings who felt positively about each other tended to achieve similar education levels, while those who spent unequal time with their dad and perceived unequal parental treatment had diverging (分开的) educational fortunes. Not that divergence is necessarily bad: Research suggests that as siblings’ relationships with their parents grow more different over time, their relationship with each other may become warmer. And following in the footsteps of your sibling can be a mistake, depending on what she’s up to: Girl s are more likely to get pregnant in their teens and teenagers are more likely to engage in risky behavior if an older sibling did so first.

One way or another, sibling influence is lasting. A study of more than 1 million Swedes found that one’s risk of d ying of a heart attack increases after a sibling dies of one, due not only to shared DNA but also to the stress of losing such a key figure, which makes sense. Most of us are different people than we’d have been if our brothers or sisters were never born. Siblings seem like they’re just there only until they aren’t.

62. What does the underlined word ‘psychotic’ in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. relatively mature

B. mentally ill

C. less independent

D. more dangerous

63. The author probably holds the view that ______.

A. if teenagers communicate positively with brothers and sisters, they will surely do well in school

B. if one has more siblings, he or she will suffer from anxiety or depression during adolescence

C. those who spent less time with parents will probably fail to achieve good academic performance

D. there will be greater chance of one dying of a heart attack after a sibling dies of the same disease

64. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Ever-lasting influence of brothers and sisters.

B. How to solve frictions between kids.

C. Whether or not to have siblings.

D. The bonds of parents with kids.

D

Good evening. Thank you, David, for that kind introduction and for the opportunity to join you for the launch of CREA TE, the 2018 U.S. Chamber (议事厅) of Commerce International IP Index.

Tonight is my first time speaking at the Chamber as Chairman and CEO of the MPAA (美国电影协会), but our two great organizations have a long, shared history.

Not only do our buildings occupy the same block, but did you know that the Chamber broke ground on this iconic headquarters the same year that the MPAA was founded?

I’m thrilled to know that our partnership will continue far into the future. The Chamber and GIPC’s work at the intersection of innovation and intellectual pro perty is critical to the mission of the MPAA as well as the film and television industry I am proud to represent. Together, we can advance a dynamic creative economy and support creators of all kinds.

I love that word —“creators,” by the way. It carries s o many positive emotions and personal connections.

Early in my career, I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with one of our greatest creators, Jim Henson — the founder of Jim Henson Productions, and the creator of Kermit the Frog and the Muppets.

Jim used to say, “Media — if used properly — can be an enormous source of good in the world.” And his Muppets certainly did prove that to be true. They made the world a better place.

They raised the level of preschool education in America and in more than 100 countries. They taught kids their ABCs — but also to respect others, to be more tolerant, and to dream big.

The Muppets became a beacon (指路明灯) to children of all ages and backgrounds because Jim was able to turn his creativity into a thriving (兴旺的)

enterprise. We were able to license our characters, distribute them across the globe, and protect them from unauthorized use.

You see, the Muppets aren’t just our friends, they’re an intellectual property success story. And there are thousands more like it — showing IP as the backbone of our economy; stories that we need to tell far and wide.

We need to be the voice of creators everywhere. We need people to have an emotional connection to the idea of creating in every context and every conversation.

All of us in this room, as champions of IP-related industries, know that IP is the lifeblood of innovation, and that ideas and creativity push society forward. Like media and the Muppets, IP is also a source for good in the world.

But that fact is not universally embraced. In the constant desire to find “what’s next,” I sometimes wonder if our society has allowed ideas to become commoditized.

Individual creations are still rightly praised. We want the gizmo(小发明), the new movie, the rocket ship to Mars.

However, once the “big idea” is realized, we quickly forget where it came from and why it is valuable.

Some even selfishly try to weaken the very IP protections that made the idea possible in the first place.

Go back to the Muppets —would they have boomed without strong IP protections?

Well, Jim’s amazing imagination still would have created them…I don’t think you could ever contain the genius th at is Kermit the Frog, Ms. Piggy and Gonzo…but would they have become universally known?

Would we have been able to sell the Jim Henson Company for nearly $1 billion back in 2000, a deal I was proud to be a part of? Would HBO have licensed five years of first-run Sesame Street episodes in 2015, more than 45 years after the show first premiered?

I believe the answer is no. Because the Muppets, like all creative works, are both emotionally and economically valuable. The reason the Henson assets (资产) were so valuable is that we were able to keep all of the rights protected.

It is a fundamental truth that the ideas we develop, produce, and protect are what make us thrive as a society.

All around the world, individuals, small businesses, and global enterprises alike depend on IP to put food on tables, drive progress, and fuel economies.

Just look at the numbers. The story of IP as an engine of creation and economic growth is all around us.

65. We can learn from the first four paragraphs that ______.

A. David is the founder of CREATE

B. the MPAA is located next to the headquarters

C. the lecturer is Chairman and CEO of the Chamber

D. the Chamber and the MPAA have been cooperating

66. Innovation combined with intelletual property plays a vital role in ______.

A. leading only the film and television industry

B. obtaining chances to work with creators

C. raising the level of preschool education

D. making the world a better place

67. How did the Muppets become popular around the world?

A. Jim Henson used his amazing imagination to create lots of genius characters.

B. Its founder Jim Henson managed to have his creativity protected by IP.

C. “Big ideas” of Muppets have been made emotionally valuable.

D. The Muppets became the backbone of the world economy.

68. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. The Muppets: An Intellectual Property Success Story.

B. The cooperation between the Chamber and MPAA.

C. How the Muppets took off in the global market.

D. The reserved rights of the great creators.

69. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?

A. The development of film and television industry.

B. Why IP-focused industries contribute to the GDP.

C. The percentage of the GDP created by IP-focused industries.

D. How to promote the value of IP-related industries around the world.

70. Translate the underlined sentence in the last but two paragraph into Chinese.

It is a fundamental truth that the ideas we develop, produce, and protect are what make us thrive as a society.

As world of work changes, colleges need to adapt

College is increasingly seen by high school students as a means to an end: getting a job. Since the Great Recession, surveys of teenagers —and the choices they are making about their college majors — show that higher education has become less about preparing for life or learning something that interests undergraduates and much more about securing employment.

A recent Harris Poll found that two-thirds of 14- to 23-year-old students want a degree to provide financial security, ranking it above all else when it comes to their motivation for going to college. At the same time, fewer students are majoring in the

humanities, according to newly released government data. More flock toward science, technology, engineering and math majors that they think will polish up their employment prospects.

While unemployment among recent college graduates is at historic lows, underemployment is not. About 40 percent of college graduates are underemployed, meaning they are in jobs that don’t require a bachelor’s degree. Without being gainfully employed, newly minted(刚完成的)graduates will find it difficult to enjoy the broad benefits that higher education provides.

That’s why college leaders and faculty members are beginning to recognize that they need to prepare students for employment and provide them with a broad education for life. Some schools, such as Emory University, are adding degree programs that combine applied mathematics and statistics with traditional liberal-arts majors.

Those efforts seem to be paying off. Employers are starting to take notice that students are coming out of college armed with skills needed in the job market. About 60 percent of business executives and hiring managers agree that students have the knowledge to succeed in entry-level positions, according to a survey released last week by the Association of American Colleges & Universities.

But the work of colleges to prepare students for the future of work is only beginning. The same survey found that just 34 percent of top executives and 25 percent of hiring managers say that students have the skills to be promoted. Many of those skills are soft skills — communication, team work, problem-solving — that are critical in a quickly shifting job market. Entry-level skills change every few years; it’s the habits of learning to learn and dealing with the ambiguity of a career that will prove most valuable to undergraduates in the long run.

Higher education “needs to ensure that we are effectively transferring the skills that will serve students well in our tech-driven and knowledge-based economy,” Farnam Jahanian, president of Carnegie Mellon University, told me recently.

For its part, Carnegie Mellonhas introduced what it calls“instructional sidecars,” Jahanian said, which put continuous exposure to communication, critical thinking, collaboration and entrepreneurship into courses.

It shouldn’t be left only to higher education, however, to train the next generation of workers. Employers play an important role, too.

The world of work has changed, while colleges, along with employers, are living in a dif ferent era. It’s nearly impossible any more for colleges to arm students with the vocational hard skills they’ll need to last more than a few years in almost any job after graduation. Most of college graduates’ 20s are spent moving from job to job to furth er their education and learn additional skills. And the paradox(悖论) is that job hopping is the primary reason employers are reluctant to invest in workers in the first place.

Colleges need to be more flexible in their academic offerings and employers in how they hire. That way, students will get what they want out of higher education and

支持

There are different ways to show people we care, one of which is “hugging”. Opinions about “hugging” vary from person to person. Some think hugs have benefits while others find them embarrassing.

Personally, I choose to hug someone I care. It’s a convenient and fea sible way to form a positive bond, especially between family members. For example, when Mom or I become unhappy, Dad, who is not talkative, simply hugs mum or me, and we almost always feel better immediately! What’s more, hugging makes people warm and less stressed. As students, we may be under great pressure when we have an important exam or we have butterflies in our stomach when taking part in a fierce race. At such critical moments, hugging contributes a lot to being self-confident and energetic. It can bring out the best in ourselves!

In a word, hugging does do lots of good to us teenagers. (150)

反对

There are different ways to show people we care, one of which is “hugging”. Opinions about “hugging” vary from person to person. Some think hugs have benefits while others find them embarrassing.

As far as I am concerned, it’s not a good idea to show we love someone by hugging. We Chinese are conservative. Hugging normally happens between close partners or mother and child. As to greeting others, adults mostly shake hands. Hugging, especially between new acquaintances in public places, is more than embarrassing, thus making both parties feel uneasy. At school, we teenagers can communicate with each other through different activities, using our mother tongue or English, or other body

languages rather than hugging, because hugging between boys and girls may lead to puppy love, which is against school rules and unbearable to parents.

To be brief, it’s not necessary to choose hugs in terms of our traditional culture. (150)
