Part I Reading Comprehension

Section A

Directions: There are 4passages in this section. Each followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best

choice.

Passage A

The habit of being on time is very important in modern life. To be on time means to do anything at the right time and never be late in keeping an appointment. If you always fail to be on time, that is to say, you often don't do things until the last minute, you will have a busy life. You would have to hurry for meetings, classes, and you would often feel sorry for having missed your train or flight. Even if you were OK, your friends would be angry, because you failed to keep your promises. They would worry about what you are going to miss next time.

What is more, if you are late for something, you will be wasting both yours and others' precious time. The reason is very simple: they will have to wait for you and cannot do their work.

If a teacher were 10 minutes late for his class, all the students in the class would lose 10 minutes. Imagine, how much work could be done if the students work together for 10 minutes?

However, being on time is not just a matter of time. Sometimes being late can be right, for example, we do not have to be on time for a dinner party, because it's impolite. Actually, when we say to be on time is a good habit, we mean that we should be considerate, don’t you agree?

Passage B

The cloud in the sky is part of our life. In some places, there aren’t many days without clouds all the year round. Some people call them "cotton in the s ky”. But do you know how clouds are formed?

There are three important things in the forming of clouds: water, heat, and air. The heat of the sun warms the water and air close to the ground. Some water changes into water vapor and goes into the air. Then the warm air rises. The warm air takes the water vapor up into the sky, where they meet with cold air. The water vapor cools down and changes back into water, forming very small drops of water, called water droplets(微滴). These small water droplets don't just fall down, because more warm air is still

coming up. As a result, we can see different kinds of clouds in the sky.

However, with more and more water vapor changes back into water droplets, they get together and become bigger and bigger, thus heavier and heavier. Finally, they drop down to the ground.

6. What is the passage about?

7. What are the three important things in the forming of the clouds?

A) The sun, water and air. B) Warm air, droplets and water.

C) Cold air, wind and water. D) Water, heat and air.

8. Why don't the small drops of water in the cloud fall down to the ground?

C) Because they get together. D) Because they are clouds.

9. When do water droplets drop down to the ground?

A) When they become water vapor.

B) When they get warmer and bigger.

C) When they become colder and smaller.

D) When they become bigger and heavier.

10. What will be discussed next?

A) Snow. B) Rainbow. C) Rain. D) Waterfall.

Passage C

We can find water in almost everywhere: in ponds, streams, rivers, lakes, and in addition, as we know it, there is water in the air, in the clouds. Perhaps there is only one kind of place when water is very rare: deserts. How much have we all learned from books, films, and stories about how water can be so precious and so hard to get in deserts!

For many years people have never doubted about this. But, is this true? Sometimes we may take many things for granted and stopped thinking about them. The water problem in deserts is a very good example. Actually, scientists have found that there is plenty of water in deserts, much more than we ever expected. But, why can't we find them and use them?

The problem is that deserts are all sand, which cannot hold water up. The water in deserts is not on the surface. Water quickly goes down into the deep sand. They are stored under the sand, pure and cool. Many people who died in deserts maybe just a few yards away from the unknown water supply. They either didn't know that there is water just under their feet, or they just didn’t have the necessary tools to get them out. If we can have the right tools, we can save many lives.

The money has gone to school systems to get them to use scientifically based ways to teach reading. The goal is to help all children read at or above grade level by the end of the third grade. The Bush administration’s education law, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, established Reading First. Now, the Department of Education has released findings from a study of the program. On average, teachers using it increased the time they taught reading skills like phonics and vocabulary. But the study also found, on average, little or no effect on test scores in reading comprehension. Government researchers say they are not sure how to explain the results. Another new report listed the books read most often last year by students in American schools. The Renaissance Learning company based the report on its reading programs used in many schools. Students read books and then took computer quizzes to see if they understood them. There are tests for more than one hundred fifteen thousand books. The book read most often by first graders was “Green Eggs and Ham” by Doctor Seuss. In the fourth grade the top book was, not surprisingly, “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” by Judy Blume. 1.
