Churchill‘s childhood was an unhappy and lonely / alone one. Winston failed the entrance exam (入学考试) twice before finally / in the end managing to pass it. In 1895, the year his father died, he entered the army and was sent to Cuba, there / where he discovered his talent for writing. Churchill was delighting / delighted when his reports on the Cuban War of Independence attracted wide attention, and he seriously contemplated / revived a career as a journalist.

William Liu, who came to the United States as a youngster in 1946, views the Asian-American experience somewhat differently. As a new immigrant, he says, he felt a lot of pressure to excel, but for different reasons than Stevenson mentions. ―Stevenson‘s studies discuss the Confucian-style sense of obligation to one‘s parents, whereas I was largely motivated by prejudice,‖ he says. ―Anti-Asian feeling was quite widespread in America at that time. I couldn‘t be just average; if I wasn‘t obviously better than other people, I was considered worse.‖Liu‘s point is a compelling one; however, it doesn‘t explain everything. Liu is now learning that his children grew up with similar feelings of pressure, although the wartime discrimination against Asians had become largely a thing of the past before they were born. ―My son is studying medicine, but/although I knew he really wante d to be a banker,‖ Liu says. ― one day I asked him why he chose medical school instead of banking. He told me, ?All my life I heard you congratulating friends whose kids got into medi cal school. So I felt guilty. I didn‘t have any choice.‘‖Liu was horrified. ―I never meant to make my children feel they had to repay me for anything. But this sense that you owe your parents everything seems nearly irresistible.‖

Unit3

The biggest problem that ―cultural translators‖ have to solve is caused by very subtle cultu ral differences. Among the most troublesome cultural conflicts that international joint ventures have to cope with is the process by which decisions are made. The biggest difficulty is simply understanding that decision-making is a cultural issue. Since very few people are actually conscious of the decision-making norms that those norms are far from universal. So when they run into a different decision-making style they become first confused, then impatient with the other parties‘ ―inability‖ to make a decision. ―What‘s wrong with them — are they crazy or just stupid?!‖ The next phase is most often a determination to each the other side ―the right way‖ to make a decision —that is, their way. But since the other side (whoever it is) feels exactly the same wa y about their ―right way‖, the results of this teaching effort are usually profoundly non-educational. That’s when the situation becomes truly ugly, escalating into a total cultural war in which both parties accuse the other side of incompetence and non-cooperation.

Unit4

It‘s natural for parents to want their children to achieve great things in life, but not at the expense of the child‘s happin ess and personal development. How can you tell if your child is prone to the kind of ―achievement orientation‖ th at leads to frustration and failure in the long run? There are some signs that parents can watch for, and some steps a parent can take to preclude the most destructive effects. Is your daughter obsessed with winning, instead of being able to enjoy a game even though she loses? Encourage her to take part in activities that have no clear goal, such as going for walks or just daydreaming. Do all of your son‘s ―when-I-grow-up‘s‖ involve distinguishing himself in a glamorous career? By pointing out the positive aspects of the simple life, you can let him know that real success isn‘t measured in achievements. And don‘t forget the beneficial effects that frequent contact with nature has on children. Even if you can‘t afford to take your kids on camping holidays, you can make time for a day in the park or at the beach. It‘s great therapy for the whole family.

Unit5

When I visited the Netherlands last year, my first impression was that it was all too good to be true: a country where everyone is satisfied?! So, knowing that young people everywhere are gifted social critics, I sought out some university students and inquired what issues young people were concerned about. I was stunned to learn that the main problem students there see is with employment. In a country that‘s made good work conditions a[n] priority, this came as a real surprise. Even more stunning was the fact that it wasn‘t unemployment that these students were worried about — it was a shortage of highly paid management positions available to fresh university graduates. As the students expressed their resentment toward the older generation for ―taking up all the good jobs‖ and their bitterness over the thought of struggling to make ends meet on an entry-level salary, I couldn‘t help looking back on my own early employment experiences. I had graduated with honors from a good school, but my first job was doing door-to-door market research for salary that just barely allowed me to get by. For some reason I never resented that —or doubted that I‘d ultimately end up with a better job. I simply accepted that a young person who was just starting out would have to struggle a bit at first. I didn‘t assume that my university education gave me the right to expect special treatment. I thought my university education was a special privilege.

Unit6

Twelve graduate students are sitting around a table in a restaurant near Cambridge. Accompanying them is a 51-year-old man in a wheelchair, being fed by a nurse. Behind his eyeglasses, his blue eyes are bright, but his body looks terribly small and weak; he cannot speak; and he breathes through a plastic device in his throat. Each time the young people pose a question, the man responds with awkward movements of two fingers of one hand — almost the last physical freedom remaining to him. He slowly spells out his replies on a computer that turns his words into speech. The students are fascinated by spiritual matters, and many of their questions concern 空the origin of the universe, the laws that govern it and the meaning of life. One asks: ―Do you believe in the existence of a God who guides the universe?‖ The man smiles slightly as his fingers work空the many keys and buttons of his computer. The students await the reply in concentrated silence, as if their companion had the ultimate answer that would change their lives forever. At last the response comes, in the computer‘s strange metallic voice: ―No.‖

It turned out to be four men outside a cafe singing a love song about Cupid, each with different voice ranges, and a deep, swaying crowd, clapping along. 25 At the landscaped Seattle center, using cards and newspapers to shield themselves from the sun, rows and rows of immigrants at a naturalization ceremony listened to local officials speak about various aspects of the American dream. 26 They came from everywhere: Britain, France, Iran, Iraq-the name of every country read out, to cheers, as if we were at the Oscars and, of course, the waving of American flags. Unit 2 2 outwardly, I looked like the poster boy for success visiting from the United States.

Unit 1 4 Translate the sentences into Chinese. 1 On university campuses in Europe, mass socialist or communist movements gave rise to increasingly violent clashes between the establishment and the college students, with their new and passionate commitment to freedom and justice. (with their … and justice 部分最好提前,即先说学生的状况,再说学生与当权者的冲突。 2 These days political, social and creative awakening seems to happen not because of college, but in spiteof it. Of course, it’ true that higher education is still important. s For example, in the UK, Prime MinisterBlair was close to achieving his aim of getting 50 per cent of all under thirties into college by 2010 (eventhough a cynic would say that this was to keep them off the unemployment statistics). 3 I never hoped to understand the nature of my generation or how American colleges are changing by going to Lit Theory classes. This is the class where you look cool, a bit sleepy from too many late nights and wearing a T-shirt with some iro nic comment such as “Been there, done that and yes, this IS the T-shirt”.(第二句的主句是强调句式,汉译应在句法上稍做变通,以求类似强调语义的效果。 4 We’re a generation that comes from what has been called the short century (1914-1989), at the end of a century of war and revolution which changed civilizations, overthrew repressive governments, and left us with extraordinary opportunities and privilege, more than any generation before.
