I. Introduction

1.1 About Emily Bront?

Emily Bront?was born in Thornton, near Bradford in Yorkshire, to Patrick Bront?and Maria Branwell. She was the younger sister of Charlotte Bront?and the fifth of six children. In 1824, the family moved to Haworth, where Emily’s fat her was perpetual curate, and it was in these surroundings that their literary oddities flourished. In childhood, after the death of their mother, the three sisters and their brother Patrick Branwell Bront?created imaginary lands, which were featured in s tories they wrote. Little of Emily’s work from this period survived, except for poems spoken by characters (The Bront?s’ Web of Childhood, Fannie Ratchford, 1941).

In 1838, Emily commenced work as a governess at Miss Patchett’s Ladies Academy at Law Hill School, near Halifax, leaving after about six months due to homesickness. Later, with her sister Charlotte, she attended a private school in Brussels run by Constantin Heger and his wife, Claire Zo?Parent Heger. They later tried to open up a school at their home, but had no pupils.

It was the discovery of Emily’s poetic talent by Charlotte that led her and her sisters to publish a joint collection of their poetry in 1846, Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. To evade contemporary prejudice against female writers, the Bront? sisters adopted androgynous first names. All three retained the same initials: Charlotte became Currer Bell, Anne became Acton Bell and Emily became Ellis Bell.

In 1847, she published her only novel, Wuthering Heights, as two volumes of a three volume set (the last volume being Agnes Grey by her sister Anne). Its innovative structure somewhat puzzled critics. Although it received mixed reviews when it first came out, the book subsequently became an English literary classic. In 1850, Charlotte edited and published Wuthering Heights as a stand-alone novel and under Emily’s real name.

A portrait of Constantin Heger (1865), Professor of Emily and Charlotte during their stay in Brussels in 1842 Emily’s health, like her sis ter, had been weakened by the harsh local climate at home and at school. She caught a cold during the funeral of her brother in September, which led to tuberculosis. Refusing medical help, she died on 19 December 1848 at about two in the afternoon. She was interred.

1.2 A Summary of Wuthering Heights

It is a story about love and revenge. Heathcliff was adopted by Mr. Earn Shaw on the Livepool Street. He live with Mr.’s son Hindly and his daughter Cathy. Hindly hated Heathcliff but his sister likes Heathcliff. After Earn Shaw died, Hindly became the host of the family, he treated Heathcliff as a farmer and insulted him. At the same time, Cathy and Heathcliff loved each other. Linton, the son of Thrushcross Grange, pay court to Cathy, and visit her very often. Cathy made up her mind to get married with him, Heathcliff was very angry and went out. Heathcliff came back with a lot of money. He cheated Hindley’ belongings by gambling. He did the things all for revenge. He married Linton’sister Isabella. Cathy died after she gave birth to little Catherine. Isabella discerned Heathcliff and left him. She procreated little Linton and died . Heathcliff spoiled little Linton and badgered him to love little Catherine. Heathcliff hijacked little Catherine and forced her to be married with his son. After this, he annexed all Linton’ belongings and finish his revenge. At the same time, Heathcliff was importuned by Cathy. He stayed at his own room all day and didn’t have meal or sleep. At last he died in dumps and delirium.

1.3 The Writing Background of Wuthering Heights

Emily Bront? lived thirty years of British society when it was turbulent times. Capitalism is developed and increasingly exposed its inherent defects; between labor and capital contradiction; the unemployed workers poverty; a

large number of child labor was brutally tortured to death. Coupled with the British government repressive democratic reform to struggle and the workers’movement: such as the 1819 Peter road massacre is an example. Therefore this period of literary works also reflect. Our female writer Emily Bront? was born in such years of struggle! She was born in a priest family, the father named Petric Bront? (1777 - 1861), the original is an Irish priest, married in 1812 in Cornwall in southwest England(Cornwall) Maria Bo Lan Will as his wife, six sons and daughters of the knee. The older daughter Maria (1814), the two daughter of Elizabeth (1815), the three daughter of Charlotte (1816), only son Blaine will (1817), below is Emily (1818) and ANN (1820). The latter four were born in the village of Thornton is located in the wilderness of Yorkshire, Mr. Bront? was called to the Ministry in the parish. In one eight two years the family moved to Ho Chilling worth area, home in a remote corner of the wilderness. Their three sisters in this place to spend a lifetime.

In 1827, their mother died, aunt from Cornish group to take care of the family. Three years later, led by Maria, the four sisters went to boarding school. Because of poor living conditions, Maria and Elizabeth suffered from tuberculosis died, Charlotte and Emily survived, then studying at home together with brother Bo Lan Will. The family always keep oneself to oneself, four brothers and sisters will often with reading, writing poetry, and fiction story to spend the lonely time. Charlotte and Bo Lan Will to think Angelia Dynasty as the center to write novels, and Emily and his sister Ann creates a they called Gangduoer Pacific Islands to make up a story.

Although their home near to Chilling worth Industrial Zone, however, the house is located in between urban and wilderness. Emily often to desert her sisters to walk in the west. So on the one hand the Bront? sisters saw developing towns in the capitalist society, on the other hand is also affected by the atmosphere of the infection in the wilderness. Especially Emily, her surface be scanty of words, but passionate heart, although not understand politics, but very interested in politics. The three sisters often see liberal or conservative party

journals, like talking about politics, which of course is influenced by their father. Petric Bront? is a more radical conservatives, early German movement against crossing the, later also help ho Chilling worth workers, and support their strike. Emily and her sister had inherited his sense of justice and sympathy for the handicraft workers rebellion. This would create the conditions for the birth of

―Wuthering Heights‖.

II. An Analysis of the Protagonist -Catherine

2.1 Being Kind, Rebel, Sympathetic in Her Childhood

Because she born and was still living in the ragged surroundings, Catherine loved and was familiar with the nature. Meanwhile, the nature has a big impact on her personality. She is very strong, crazy, rebellious, and wild. When denounced by all the people, Catherine is very arrogant and thinks she is the happiest girl in the world, which shows that environment is very important for her developing personality. When her father asked her to do something, she always defied the authority of her father and she was very rebellious. Because influenced by the nature, she behaves without affection and bears little resemblance to the girl of her age. Nelly comments her like this: she put all of us past our patience fifty times and oftener in a day. From the hour she came down stairs till the hour she went to bed, we had not a minute’s security that she wouldn’t be in. Also The writer described as follows: ―Her spirits were always at high-water mark, her tongue always going--singing, laughing, and plaguing everybody who would not do the same(Bront? 1993:34) this wild, wicked girl has the bonniest eye, and sweetest smile, and lighten foot in the parish. (Bront?1993:34) One day her father, MS. Earnshaw, took an orphan little Heathcliff went home. Because they have something in common, Catherine and Heathcliff quickly became the closet friends. Catherine and Heathcliff were living together when they were in childhood. They always played together. They run crazily on the land. Also the rebellious Catherine and Heathcliff always get happiness from their fierce revolts. The funny experience in Wuthering Heights have been kept

5

in a diary of Catherine: Heathcliff and I are going to rebel. We took our initiatory step this evening. I took my dingy volume by the scroop, and hurled it into the dog kennel, vowing I hated a good book. Heathcliff kicked his to the same place. (Bront,1999:17) Her rebellious spirit stems from her wild and free personality which is owed by nature. Also because she is accompanied by Heathcliff in her childhood and they have personal characters in common, Catherine’ freedom wildness and rebellious was increased .

However, she was goodness, sympathy and pretty, because she rebelled her brother for his violence to Heathcliff and tried her best to protect him. When her brother mistreated Heathcliff Catherine sympathized him very much. She rarely cares about others, but when Heathcliff was hurt by his brother she would took care of him. The relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff was developing under the lack of civilized education. Their life was tightly held together, they had to face Catherine’ brother. So they have so much in common. They are both crazy rebellious wild but good and pure.

2.2 Being Vain, Selfish, Proud After Catherine Met Linton

One evening, Catherine and Heathcliff slipped into Thrushcross Grange to have fun. Unfortunately, they were discovered and Catherine was bitten by a dog. The master of Thrushcross Grange Mr. Linton drove away Heathcliff and kept Catherine to recover from the wound for 5 weeks. During her stay at Thrushcross Grange, Catherine became friends with Mr. Linton’s son Edgar and daughter Isabella. The brother and sister not only took good care of Catherine but also taught her good manners which changed her from a vulgar girl into a graceful lady. She was influenced by the civilized education and the upper class.

However, at the same time Catherine’ s affection towards Heathcliff also underwent a subtle change. Although she knew she still loved Heathcliff very much, she came to feel it a shame to marry him, a servant. She said to Nally that if all else perished, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained and he reminded and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger;

6

I should not seem a part of it, from which we can see she loves Heathcliff deeply. But she became selfish and vanity pride and she has changed in many ways. Also her manners much improved and habit has changed. Like this: First, there alighted from a handsome black pony a very dignified person, with brown ringlets falling from the cover of a feathered beaver, and a long cloth habit, which she was obliged to hold up with both hands that she might sail in. But before she was a wild, hatless little savage jumping into the house, and rushing to squeeze us all breathless. Second, when she saw her lovely dogs, her eyes sparked with joy, but she could hardly touch them in case they spoiled her splendid garments. Third, she gazed concernedly at the dusky fingers she held in her own, and also at her dress; which she feared had gained no embellishment from its contact with Heathcliff’ s. But before she never disliked and avoided Heathcliff. Maybe Catherine wants to be a gentle girl not a wild girl at all. Then, their relationship has changed because Catherine clear that Heathcliff could never give her that she wanted and she loved Edgar like she said that ―because he is young and handsome and cheerful and rich‖and she also thought if she mar ried Edgar she could ―leave an uncomfortable disorderly home for a wealthy respectable one ‖ In addition, she thought the wealth of Edgar would be useful to help Heathcliff. But in reality, it did not work. She did not have a good understanding of love, which is something pure and saint. However, Catherine lost her childhood at the time when she started to consider her future. She totally knew that it was impossible to be together with Heathcliff. She had to find the future, a wealthy, handsome husband who could give her steady life and reputation while Heathcliff had nothing. Between the true love and vanity, she chooses the vanity and high social standing. This bad result was caused from the tradition in her life that the money and class is very important. So she wanted to have a civilized upper and more comfortable life.

2.3 Being Crazed, Wicked After She Got Married

7

When she married Edgar and Heatncliff left, she didn’t feel happy at all. She was very lonely in her spirit. She remembered that she had betrayed Heathcliff and herself. Catherine tells Nelly that her life in Wuthering Heights is much better than heaven because Heathcliff is here. This is also a reason why Catherine wants to relive this unforgettable experience when she is tormented to death by two kind of tremendous forces after her marriage .Money and house brought her into nothingness. She began to cherish the memory of Heathcliff, cherished t s self-abased. In their love, even at that storming night, Heathcliff left. She never thought about their future, their life. Thus, shall we ask that love should be based on what? Catherine loved Edgar, but she also said to Nelly:‖ you think me a selfish wretch; But did it never strike you that if Heathcliff and I married, we should be beggars? whereas, if I marry Linton, I can aid Heathcliff to rise, and place him out of my brother's power.‖ Before the difficulty, she chose to confront. On the contrary, Heathcliff chose to escape, because he had no courage to overcome it. Catherine was 15 while Heathcliff was 16, they were children. They did not understand what love was. They just found the happiness they had in common. He is a little boy stood by her. There was no etiquette and standard but sincerity. In the Wuthering Heights, happiness was gone forever. Because of Hindly, Heathcliff lost the chance to learn and he was almost lost himself.

Fortunately, Catherine did not give up him. He abandoned himself for Catherine represents wild nature, in both her high, lively spirits and her occasional cruelty. She loves Heathcliff so intensely that she claims they are the same person. However, her actions are driven in part by her social ambitions, which initially are awakened during her first stay at the Linton, and which eventually compel her to marry Edgar. Catherine is free—spirited, beautiful, spoiled, and often arrogant, she is given to fits of temper, and she is torn between her both of the men who love her. She pushes herself into her tragedy, the endless predicament between her love and marriag e, which won’t end up

8

with her death. In one hand, because Heathcliff married Edgar and he took revenge in their next generation he broke Catherine ’heart deeply and she was ill- tempered extreme and negative. On the other hand, Linton always tolerated her and was patient with her, she became more and more selfish crazy and ill-tempered.

2.4 Two Tragedies Caused by Duel Characters

Catherine represents wild nature, in both her high, lively spirits and her occasional cruelty. She loves Heathcliff so intensely that she claims they are the same person. However, her actions are driven in part by her social ambitions, which initially are awakened during her first stay at the Linton, and which eventually compel her to marry Edgar. 3 An Analysis of the Formation of Her personality

3.1 From the Social Background

The story in Wuthering Heights happened around the late years of the 18th century to the early years of the 19th century-the age of Victoria which was right the time that British was suffering social turbulence. From the social development since the industrial revolution in the second half of the 18th century, the social class in english society had undergone radical changes. The

9

life style was broken by the enclosure movement and expopriation. The majority of peasants were driven off their land which had been passed into the hands of the landlords. The landless peasants went to cities and became workers who owned nothing but labor and had to work long hours for low wages.people hated the old life style, they looked forward to seeing new fancy and new things. People in life would be affected and restricted by all kinds of new customs , ect.

The cause of the tragic fate of Catherine is profoundly related to the society. From the prospect of the time, patriarchy is the leading factor of family life and the marriage and destiny of children, who can’t choose their own life ways while following their hearts. And even if they have rights and freedom to choose, they will be overwhelmed by the social value and their parents’wills sooner or later. Catherine could not break away from the view of social class very easily, meanwhile, Catherine can also could not abandon the love to Heathcliff from her deep heart. She is unable to resist the temptation of material civilization. During the process of pursuing a civilized life, although she ever tries to change her lover in order to combine ferity and civilization together. Whereas she attempts to get help from others other than solve her problem by her own endeavor, which resulting in loosing herself. She is a girl with a fairly good family background , she is also a girl who likes to make adventures, to meet challenges. Her annoyance of Edgar is an irony to the life of upper class, to the apparent decency of those gentlemen.

3.2 From Her Family Background

Family is the first place when people came to this world. Different family will determine or influence one’s character and one’s fate to some extent.since her childhood, Catherine was a flower in the green house. She was born in a rich family. she was very energetic and mischievous. Different from other girls, she is very naughty and has many fantastic ideas. She was wild, wanting control others. When her father had a journey she asked for a whip

10

for riding house. When denounced by all the people, Catherine is very arrogant and thinks she is the happiest girl in the world, which is showing that environment is very important for her developing personality. When her father asked her to do something, she always defies the authority of her father and she was very rebellious. 1993:34) this wild, wicked girl has the bonniest eye, and sweetest smile, and lighten foot in the parish Her rebellious spirit stems from her wild and free personality which is owed by nature. Also because she is accompanied by Heathcliff in her childhood and they have personal characters in common, Catherine’freedom wildness and rebellious was increased .However, she was goodness, sympathy and pretty, because she rebelled her brother for his violence to Heathcliff and tried her best to protect him . She remembered that she had betrayed Heathcliff and herself. and after her marriage, Linton always tolerated her and was patient with her, she became more and more selfish crazy and ill-tempered.

3.3 From Her Own Personality

Catherine is arrogant by nature, so she has a burning desire for admiration from all the people due to extreme vanity. Therefore, she marries to Linton, whose social status is relatively high. She expects that others yield to her, or else she will torment herself intensely not only in physical but in the mental. Catherine is selfish. She loves Heathcliff, but she mistakes the love for

11

something that must be rewarded with money, so she marries Linton in order to help Heathcliff, whose thoughts are not taken into account by Catherine, however, when Heathcliff came back, she immediately developed an intimate relationship with him, and she also asked that Linton liked him just like her, or at least he could accept him. Catherine did everything out of her aspiration, and she thought all of people should take her as the center of the life. So in the end she still considered that her unhappiness in life was due to unfriendly conducts from others. From his point, it is concluded that what Catherine needs is more unconstrained love and living a life in her own way than owning an artificial life. It is extreme character makes her have a miserable life. Catherine, who chooses money, does not obtain happiness. But her choice is sensible, because only marrying a wealthy person can make sure her survive in temporal society. Provided that Catherine chose to lead a vagrant life with Heathcliff, would they be happy?

VI Conclusion

William Somer Eset said that I do not know what a novel in which the pain of love, obsession, cruel, persistent, ever so surprisingly describe. ―Wuthering Heights‖ makes me think of those great paintings of El Ge Like in a dim barren land in the painting is a landscape under dark clouds, thunder prolonged sickness East crooked West down silhouette is one that did not belong to the emotional earthly confused trance, they breathlessly. Leaden sky passing a bolt of lightning, add the finishing touches to the scene, adding to the sense of mystery horror. That shows he gives a high marks to this novel .It also has a big impact on me. Especially, the tragedy end of the novel. The changeable character of Catherine is caused by many reasons. Her vanity pride and selfish, the family factors, the social background, the environment that she lived in. Catherine gives an unbelievable reason for her marriage with Linton was she wanted to help Heathcliff by using her husband’s money. And the other one was

12

she could be the most important lady miles around by marrying him. It was very clear that this kind of selfishness was the radical reason for their tragic endings. But if she would be far away from the vanity and selfish, not taking the positional difference into consideration, not be afraid of the poor and hard life and marrying her true love- Heathcliff, there will be a good result .It is a kind of vehement and destructive love which is unpolluted by the secular things, such as fame, wealth and social status. Maybe the happy and pure life in Wuthering Heights is a good reason why Catherine looks down upon Thrushcross Grange and asks Edgar to bury her in the moor her only way to return to nature .which teach me to keep the dignity of life and heart of freedom. No matter how austere the challenge we meet. We should yearn for freedom. About love, everyone should follow his heart. However, and there is still something. I cannot fully understand. Many people in the world are trying to find a perfect companion. But some of them do not know what their new wife or husband is like. This kind of situation often leads to separation or hostility, so we should be radical. As we all know, pure love can bring happiness to us, but selfish love can ruin a person. Also about hate, I deeply feel that hate is a horrible thing. Hate makes the world dark. Hate makes people forget the happy and beautiful thing around them. If it cannot be dealt with well, it would influence the next generation. In addition, attitude is also important. Different attitudes produce different results. We can learn that from the different ending of Catherine and her daughter. We can see how important a positive attitude is. Love is ever lasting, but hatred is not. What we should do is insisting on pure love and do not let the hatred blind our eyes. In a word, be positive and following your heart.

Heathcliff is a fictional character in the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bront?. Owing to the novel's enduring fame and popularity, he is often regarded as an archetype of the tortured Romantic Byronic hero whose all-consuming passions destroy both himself and those around him. Heathcliff can also be viewed as a reflection and product of his psychological past: the abuse, neglect and scorn of those with whom he grows up render him abusive, neglectful and scornful. Legend has stereotyped him somewhat into a romantic hero, and he is generally known more for his love for Catherine Earnshaw than his final years of vengeance in the second half of the novel, in which he grows into a bitter, haunted man (although there are also a number of incidents in Heathcliff's early life that show that he was an angry and sometimes malicious individual from the beginning; again, these tend to be glossed over in the popular imagination). His complicated, mesmerising and altogether bizarre nature makes him a rare character, with components of both the hero and the anti-hero. Catherine Earnshaw, known as Catherine Linton after her marriage, is the main female protagonist of Emily Bront?'s novel Wuthering Heights. While residing in her ancestral home Wuthering Heights, she forms a deep romantic bond with foster brother Heathcliff, one that leads them both into misery, violence and despair. Edgar Linton is a character in Emily Bront?'s novel Wuthering Heights. His role in the story is that of Catherine Earnshaw's husband. He resides at Thrushcross Grange and falls prey to Heathcliff's schemes for revenge against his family. Edgar is the father of his and Catherine's daughter, Catherine Linton, and the brother of Isabella Linton. He is a complete foil of Heathcliff as a character, as shown by his tender, gentle, and weak personality as opposed to Heathcliff's savage, tyrannical nature. Isabella Linton is a female character in Emily Bront?'s only novel Wuthering Heights. She is the sister of Edgar Linton and the wife of Heathcliff. Hindley Earnshaw is a male character in Emily Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights. The brother of Catherine Earnshaw, father of Hareton Earnshaw, and sworn enemy of Heathcliff, he descends into a life of drunkenness, degradation, and misery after his wife Frances dies in childbirth, enabling

On the Three Female Characters in The Great Gatsby

On the Three Female Characters in The Great Gatsby 20111151121 中国青年政治学院外语系潘思岑1.General introduction The "American dream" is a unique cultural phenomenon in American history, also is a everlasting theme in American literature. Fitzgerald, most good at writing about "American dream", is a genuine author born under American culture and the "American dream". Fitzgerald is outstanding in literary circles in the United States along with Hemingway, Faulkner. The Great Gatsby is the representative work of Fitzgerald, published in 1925. By describing the protagonist Gatsby pursuing the American dream, achieving the American dream and eventually becoming a kind of sacrifice during the process of the American dream, the novel critically reflected the corruption, erosion and the strong criticism of the American society under the a flashy, bright and exciting surface. This work has been praised as the most profound contemporary American novel, which has been recognized embodiment of creative thinking and artistic style of Fitzgerald. The author himself also acknowledges that the novel is his conscious artistic achievement from creative thinking. It is Gatsby, as one of Fitzgerald protagonists in the novel, who has been a typical figure in the world literary gallery and recorded into the western literary classic(114). In The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald exquisitely and accurately depicts the “jazz age”. The three important female images are particularly impressive: Gatsby's dream lover, Daisy Buchanan from a noble family, Daisy's girlfriend, also a golf player Jordan Baker, and Tom Buchanan's mistress Myrtle Wilson. As for Jordan Baker who always keeps skeptical for the world, “there are only people just pursuing and being
