For years I wanted a flower garden. I’d spend hours thinking of different things I could plant. But then we had Matthew. And Marvin. And the twins, Alisa and Alan. And then Helen. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.

Money was tight, as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I’d have to say,“Do you see a money tree outside? Money doesn’t grow on trees,you kno w.”

A famous American saying goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”That is exactly what a young girl from Connecticut decided to do.

Before her first birthday, Alexandra “Alex” Scott was diagnosed(诊断) with a fast-growing type of cancer. Instead of a happy childhood, Alex’s life became a series of trips to the hospital. More and more people joined her cause. Communities and schools began setting up their own “Alex’s lemon ade stands.” People from around the world wrote to give en couragement and show gratitude to the brave little girl.

Sadly, on August 1, 2020, Alex lost her battle with cancer---but not before raising an amazing $700,000! It was her privilege(优待) to present this amount to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Alex’s dream of raising $1 million was realized in November 2020, three months after her death.
