Have you ever thought about what your own personality is like?

If you are asked to describe yourself with three words, which three words

would you choose?

Or, do you actually have no idea what your own personality is like?

Are you actually a person with no personality?

But then again, is personality really so important?

Kenya Hara, a leading design personality in Japan, once said:

The value of personality, as well as the explicit expression of likes and dislikes,

have been unnecessarily overestimated.

It is a good thing that we live in a society where all people are free to express

their desires.

But freedom can also bring confusion.

What some people are really seeking is not to enjoy the freedom itself, but to

force others to see their freedom.

For example, “I want to eat Mac Donald’s” and “Mac Donald’s will do mean to eat Mac Donald’s.

But it seems that the former embodies a person’s independence, while the la reflects the lack of assertiveness.

However, is this really necessary?

Is one’s daily performance of independence with a variety of acts not an

embodiment of being not independent?

An independent person will indeed have a personality, but a person with personality may not necessarily be independent.

They might just be a slave of vanity, craving the attention of others every day.

What do you really need, freedom and independence, or a tag that hangs on you?

It seems that most people have not figured out this issue.

On a bench in Regen’s Park, London, on October 7, 1970, a young man studying for MBA degree at London Business School met an Irish girl who first arrived in London.

The young man was about to graduate from the business school and become a nine-to-fiver.

As a matter of fact, he was going to become an engineer at Chrysler Corporation.

However, his life trajectory was about to change because of the girl in front of him.

The two of them fell in love at first sight and married a year later.

Normally, they would probably each get a stable job and live a middle-class life day in and day out.

But they think they want more freedom in their life.

As a result, the young couple bought a small car a year later and started an

overland journey through Europe and Asia.

Eventually, they crossed the whole Oceania and arrived in Australia.

最终,他们穿过大洋洲,来到了澳大利亚;

Here they met with many other people who want to travel on their own, all of whom are eager to know the details of their travels.

So the couple published a book to share their travel experiences.

In the end, they opened a company that popularized all kinds of travel knowledge and experience and thus became the richest backpackers in the world.

The young man is called Tony Wheeler, and the Irish girl is Mauren Wheeler.

That is how Lonely Planet was born.

You may know that Taylor Swift is a creative and dramatic singer.

You may know that she is also a songwriter.

But if you assume that all her commercial success came from herself, then you are wrong.

There are a lot of people who've made great contribution to this icon's triumph.

And one of the most important ones of them all is Jack Antonoff.

He is Taylor's producer and a musician himself.

Don't get me wrong. Jack is not just a producer for Taylor Swift.

He is Taylor Swift's main producer.

2017 has been a fruitful year for him, because b esides Taylor's new album Reputation he also produced quite a lot other eye-catching pop records like Lorde's Melodrama and St. Vincent's Masseduction.

Being creative is not easy for anyone, even if it's someone as productive as

Jack Antonoff that we're talking about.

And his advice is:

If it's too big, don't look at it.

“If, on January 1, 2017, someone laid out in front of me that I was going to

make the Lorde record and the St. Vincent record and the stuff with Taylor Swift,

I’d say I couldn’t do it.

But I knew they were going to get done. You slowly chip away at it one day at

a time and keep your head down.

If it’s too big, don’t look at it.

If you want to do something massive, don’t look at it, because all you’re to see is why it won’t work.

The killer of productivity is reality.”

This is the advice that Antonoff shared.

And by the way, the time he usually wakes up is between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Right, he is not an early bird. And that's something to be despised by nearly all

the success books.

But apparently he is teaching a lesson way more important than anything they

taught in those books:

Life is a mess. It's already hard even if someone gave you a plan to follow.

It's much harder if your job is to create something new.

There is no shortcut for anything.

You just try everything you can and deal with it when something goes wrong.

Chances are high that you’ve heard such things:

Don’t indulge yourself in safety. That’s

like boiling a frog in warm water. It

will slowly kill you and you won’t even notice it.

不要贪图安逸的环境,那是温水煮青蛙,会在不知不觉中杀死你;

You should get out of your comfort zone. Go for some challenges. Only by

doing that can you grow stronger.

走出自己的舒适区,去接受挑战,这样才能变强;

You can only really learn what’s useful when you are facing immediate crisis. Nobody grows in a stable environment.

And I only have one sentence for all these soup:

Bullshit.

Don’t let yourself be fooled by those them.

And don’t despise a stable life.

This balanced state of life is a rare treasure.

So many young people fight like hell in those major companies not because

they enjoy the thrill of challenges but because they want to make such balance for themselves.

The ultimate skill for survival has never been the spirit of adventure or the ability to endure suffering.

生存所需要的基本技能从来就不是冒险精神,也不是什么吃苦的能力;

It is the ability of managing risks.

That’s what you should learn.

I remember there is a sentence in the movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

"She doesn't know what she likes but she knows what she doesn't like."

This sentence is describing Cristina.

Back then I found this sentence really attractive. But that was when I was a foolish child and didn't know yet how hard life can be.

Now I find no charm in this expression. I only see confusion and pain in it.

Not knowing what to do is the greatest suffering in the world.

I've suffered it, in my life and in my career.

The beauty that I once assumed I would find in this state of vacancy never existed. It only seems to be beauty when you see it in someone else's life.

When it happens to you. Believe me. It's not beautiful at all.

Now I really cherish the goals that I've found or set for myself.

Life can only be happy if you find something to work for.

So search for it when you still have time. End your suffering while you can.

Have you ever failed?

If you haven't, I suggest you try some.

I have failed, many times.

And some of these failures were even painful.

But I cherish them more than I cherish my success.

Success sometimes makes you numb .

But failures make you awake. Failures are cleansing.

Failing is not necessarily losing. Neither does a failure make you a loser.

Failing is just the name we give to the state you stay in until you succeed.

A failure is a precious opportunity to learn new things.

And trust me. You always remember what you learn in failures better than those you learn in success.

Failing doesn't mean you lost something forever. It only means that you didn't get it yet and you have to find another way to get it.

And isn't that a treasture? A new direction to think.

Don't pray for easy success. That' a curse.

Pray for hard failure.

As long as it doesn't kill you, it will definitely make you stronger.

What books should I read?

What's the purpose of reading books?

That's two questions I've been asking myself my whole life.

For the second question, I guess I've already got the answer.

I read as much as I can so that I can be a man with vision .

I think that's the ultimate goal of reading. And I think that's the best gift reading can bring you.

And for the first question, I can't say I have the best answer. But I do have some experience to share.

First, you should read books which teach you things about culture.

Only by knowing a culture well can you deepen your thoughts. Only by knowing several cultures can you broaden your horizon.

Second, you should read books which teach you how to appreciate things.

The longing for beauty is what has been keeping human cultures developing. You need to know how to identify beauty and how to appreciate them.

Third, you should read books which teach you things from disciplines that you don't know yet.

There are too many still left to know. We can't assume that we've already known enough.

Fourth, you should read books which teach you about all the new things happening now.

The world is constantly changing. You need to keep pace with it.

Finally, you should read books which entertain you.

You are not a learning machine. You need to enjoy the physical and mental pleasure that every human enjoys. This recovers you and gives you energy to learn better.

These are the 5 kinds of books that I make myself read. And I think everybody should read them.

Don't you agree with me?

A group of researchers in America have done a survey .

They asked a lot of people what their greatest regret is.

And according to the statistics they got, 75% of the people said it's that they didn't work hard enough when they were young and as a result they had achieved nothing.

Nowadays it seems popular for young people to deliberately stay confused and do nothing seriously.

That's really sad.

Youth is the most precious thing you have. And it's the most precious resource at your hand.

Stay busy when you are young. Fight as much as you can. Life is hard enough

even if you try. Let alone if you don't.

Like what they say in Game of Thrones, winter is coming.

Winter is coming for everyone, all the time.

This winter's name is Time.

Opportunities are for those who have prepared themselves.

Are you one of them?

Recently, one of M’s friend was about to graduate. He had been looking for a job and he came to M for advice.

This friend of M’s n ow works as an intern in a public institution. This institution deals with international trades and provides a lot opportunities of international communication. And they pay the employees nicely.

Besides, it has a feature that most public institutions share: leisure.

The jobs are nine-to-five and you rarely work overtime there. You can say that

it’s many people’s dream workplace.

And the most thrilling part is that the institution wants this friend of M’s t o become a regular employee. They offered him to stay.

But what’s astonishing is that this friend turned them off.

And this is why he came to M.

He was afraid that he would lose his competitiveness in such a secured environment.

He was afraid that he would become the frog.

He thought he should find a place with fiercer competition and acquire abilities there.

And for the payment part, though what the institution offered is way higher than what most fresh graduates c an get, but he had heard about the surprisingly high starting salary that BAT pay their employees.

他曾经听说过BAT这些巨头那高得令人乍舌的起薪;

So he confidently thought that he could certainly find a better job.

However, he does not have any other offer at hand.

This beautiful future is just his imagination so far.

M was nearly scared to death when he heard this.

He was originally planning to persuade this friend to stay there.

But fortunately, there are still several months left before the f riend’s internship ends. And anyway, it was the institution which proposed the job in the first place.

So there is still a chance for him to turn back.

Yes, if you examine all those success books and industry legends, you would find a lot of successful cases which were born under great risks.

The spirit of adventure seems to have become something worshiped by the whole society.

On the other hand, a stable job is usually despised by people. They think it shows a person’s lack of ambition and even lack of merits.

But all these successful cases born under great risks are just like the thought that you grow faster in severe competition. They are both survivor bias.

The ones who can show up in front of you and tell you this are the minority who survived. Most of the others have already died and disappeared. They don have the chance to come and warn you.

Yes, this is the current job market. Many young people who came to the first-tier cities ended up in devastating failures.

And you won’t know these people’s stories.

87 Every day is a lucky day I teach economics at UNLV three times per week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, I cheerfully asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been so good. He had his wisdom teeth removed. The young man then proceeded to ask me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question reminded me of something I'd read somewhere before: "Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to approach life that day," I said. "I choose to be cheerful." "Let me give you an example," I continued, addressing all sixty students in the class. "In addition to teaching here at UNLV, I also teach out at the community college in Henderson, 17 miles down the freeway from where I live. One day a few weeks ago I drove those 17 miles to Henderson. I exited the freeway and turned onto College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died. I tried to start it again, but the engine wouldn't turn over. So I put my flashers on, grabbed my books, and marched down the road to the college." "As soon as I got there I called AAA and arranged for a tow truck to meet me at my car after class. The secretary in the Provost's office asked me what has happened. 'This is my lucky day,' I replied, smiling." " 'Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?' She was puzzled. 'What do you mean?'" " 'I live 17 miles from here.' I replied. 'My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn't. Instead, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of here. I'm still able to teach my class, and I've been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn't have been arranged in a more convenient fashion.'" "The secretary's eyes opened wide, and then she smiled. I smiled back and headed for class." So ended my story. I scanned the sixty faces in my economics class at UNLV. Despite the early hour, no one seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them. Or maybe it wasn't the story at all. In fact, it had all started with a student's observation that I was cheerful.

The Historical Significance of American Revolution The ways of history are so intricate and the motivations of human actions so complex that it is always hazardous to attempt to represent events covering a number of years, a multiplicity of persons, and distant localities as the expression of one intellectual or social movement; yet the historical process which culminated in the ascent of Thomas Jefferson to the presidency can be regarded as the outstanding example not only of the birth of a new way of life but of nationalism as a new way of life. The American Revolution represents the link between the seventeenth century, in which modern England became conscious of itself, and the awakening of modern Europe at the end of the eighteenth century. It may seem strange that the march of history should have had to cross the Atlantic Ocean, but only in the North American colonies could a struggle for civic liberty lead also to the foundation of a new nation. Here, in the popular rising against a "tyrannical" government, the fruits were more than the securing of a freer constitution. They included the growth of a nation born in liberty by the will of the people, not from the roots of common descent, a geographic entity, or the ambitions of king or dynasty.

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside. Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn?t easy, and there were many times I didn?t feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself. I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren?t there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,“She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been.”My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults—and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn?t be replaced. I became a searcher, wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3 pressure to act in ways that I didn?t like any more, and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place. Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can’t be. If you put a buzzard1) in a pen2) six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt3) to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top. The ordinary bat that flies around at night, who is a remarkable nimble4) creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is to shuffle5) about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation6) from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash. A bumblebee7) if dropped into an open tumbler8) will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists9) in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself. In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations10), not realizing that the answer is right there above them.

With the American nation, for the first time, a nation was born, not in the dim past of history but before the eyes of the whole world.

It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the Earth, it has no time to flow down the spout. We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We all waited, some patiently, others irritated, because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I get lost in the sound and sight of the heavens w ashing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child come pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day. Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in, "Mom, let's run through the rain." she said. "What?"

Have you ever thought about what your own personality is like? If you are asked to describe yourself with three words, which three words would you choose? Or, do you actually have no idea what your own personality is like? Are you actually a person with no personality? But then again, is personality really so important? Kenya Hara, a leading design personality in Japan, once said: The value of personality, as well as the explicit expression of likes and dislikes, have been unnecessarily overestimated. It is a good thing that we live in a society where all people are free to express their desires. But freedom can also bring confusion. What some people are really seeking is not to enjoy the freedom itself, but to force others to see their freedom. For example, “I want to eat Mac Donald’s” and “Mac Donald’s will do mean to eat Mac Donald’s. But it seems that the former embodies a person’s independence, while the la reflects the lack of assertiveness. However, is this really necessary?
