Do you want to see the effects of global warming? Then head north. Recent studies indicate that the North Pole could be underwater during the summer in less than 10 years, instead of coated in thick sea ice. But seeing the Arctic terrain (地带)up close isn’t easy, unless you’re handy with a dogsled. Steger is going to take all of us there.

Steger, 64, is a great polar explorer. He was the first person to make a dogsled trip to the North Pole, and is also a devoted environmentalist who was early to ring the alarm bell on global warming.

Steger is about to lead a team of six young adventurers on a 1, 400-mile, 60-day-long dogsled trip across Ellesmere Island, in the Canadian Arctic. The sea ice in that region should still be frozen. “We want to take our audience to the front lines of global warming,” says Steger. The team will be uploading videos, stories and photos to the website global warming https://www.wendangku.net/doc/2917812783.html, as they march along, allowing armchair adventurers and kids in classrooms to follow their progress day to day.

Steger’s team will include some already-famous young explorers. Sam Branson, 22-year old, is an experienced Arctic traveler. Also on the journey will be 27-year-old Norwegian Sigrid Ekran. Last year Ekran become only the second woman in history to win Rookie (新秀)of the Year for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.

What they will see may be surprising. Even Steger doesn’t know exactly what to expect. Climate change has already reshaped the geography of the Arctic. “Within a decade or less, it’s going to be impossible to reach the North Pole by dog team, wi thout flotation (漂浮), ”says Steger.

1. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that .

A. climate change happens only in the far north

B. the effects of climate change are obvious in the Arctic terrain

C. climate change is going to be the biggest issue facing human race

D. climate change is the result of pollution

2. It can be inferred that the aim of the dogsled trip is to .

A. encourage young people to explore the Arctic

B. present the Arctic terrain to geography classes

C. study the cause of climate change in polar region

D. raise awareness of the damage that climate change is causing in polar regions

3. Which of the following statements about Steger’s team is TRUE?

A. Sam Branson, a member, is skilled at travelling in the Arctic.

B. Steger, the leader is a great environmental expert.

C. Ekran, a member, is the second woman to have reached the North Pole.

D. All the members are experienced Arctic explorers.

4. Why does Steger NOT know what they will see during their trip?

A. Because it will be the first time for him to go that far north.

B. Because the sea ice in that region should still be frozen.

C. Because the geography there has changed due to warmer temperatures.

D. Because they will go there by boat instead of by sledge.

B.

Some of the best evidence linking rising carbon dioxide levels to a warmer world comes from the coldest places on earth. Samples of ancient air extracted (taken) from deep inside the Antarctic(南极) and Greenland ice caps make it clear that CO2 is scarce in the atmosphere during ice ages and relatively plentiful during warmer interglacial periods(冰川期)—like the one we're in now.

The relationship between CO2 and climate is clear going back about 800,000 years. Before that, however, it gets murkier. That's largely because ice and air that old haven't yet been found. So scientists rely instead on indirect measurements—and these have led to a climate mystery: some episodes of past warming, including a planetary heat wave about 15 million years ago and another about 3.5million years ago, seem to have happened without a rise in CO2. No one quite understands why. Maybe other greenhouse gases were the cause—methane, for example. Or maybe it had to do with changes in

ocean circulation.

But according to a new study just published in Science, there may not be any mystery after all. By looking at the chemistry of fossilized foraminifera(有孔虫类)—tiny sea creatures no bigger than a grain of sand-a team led by Aradhna Tripati, of University of the California, Los Angeles, has detected a significant increase in CO2 level during both warming episodes.

If they're right, it could be pretty bad news, even for those who already worry about rising CO2. It's generally agreed that during the earlier warm period, known as the Miocene Climatic Optimum, which occurred 15 million years ago, the global temperature was high enough to make sea levels between 80 ft. and 130 ft. higher than they are today.

Of course, an increase in CO2 (or any other heat-trapping greenhouse gas) can't lead to that kind of sea-level rise unless the CO2 level stays high for a while. The latest predictions suggest a rise of 6 ft. at most by 2100, even if CO2 continues to increase at the current rate. But the new study implies that failing to reduce emissions could eventually lead to a disaster worse than most climate Cassandras have dreamed of.

These scientists aren't the first to look at the chemistry of foraminifera; the fossils are plentiful in ancient ocean sediments(沉积), so they're a particularly good tracer(追踪器) of the past. But they used a new technique to measure CO2: looking at how much of the element boron(硼) was present in the foraminifera's shells. When there's lots of CO2 in the air, there's also more in the top layers of seawater, where the relevant species of foraminifera live. That makes the water more acidic, which in turn makes the tiny animals absorb less boron into their shells as they grow.

5. What conclusion can be drawn from the samples of ancient air deep inside the Antarctic?

A. Antarctic is as cold as Greenland

B. There is the most CO2 in Antarctic atmosphere

C. The warmer the climate is, the more CO2 is in the atmosphere

D. The colder the world is, the higher the CO2 level is

6. The word “murkier” (Line 2, Para. 2) is the closest in meaning to “_______”.

A. more obvious

B. less certain

C. easier

D. less uncertain

7. What result did the scientists get by adopting indirect measurements to study the relationship between CO2 and climate?

A. CO2 contributed to the warmer climate most.

B. There were other greenhouse gases causing the warmer weather.

C. It seems that some past warming wasn't related to the rising of CO2.

D. It was the changes in ocean circulation that caused the warmer climate.

8. What did the study published in Science find?

A. Today's CO2 levels were higher than those of 15 million years ago.

B. The rising of CO2 was caused by the chemistry in foraminifera.

C. The fossilized foraminifera was the main cause of global warming.

D. There was a rise in CO2 during two episodes.

9. In what situation will today's sea levels be as high as those of 15 million years ago according to the passage?

A. The CO2 levels remain high for a period

B. The global temperature becomes very high

C. There is enough heat-trapping greenhouse gas

D. There are more emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere

Canyonlands National Park, a famous tourist attraction in Utah where visitors can see arches and other beautiful rock formations (岩石结构), is a wild and lonely area of rocks, rivers and desert plants. Only Native Americans, cowboys, and explorers entered this area before the park was set up in 1964. Even today, it is difficult to walk or ride through the park. The roads are still made of dirt. Driving requires a special vehicle. The National Park Service says Canyonlands National Park is wild America.

Rivers created the area as they cut rocks into many different formations. At the center of the park are two deep canyons(峡谷) carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. Three areas that surround these rivers are included in the park.

One of these areas is called the Maze District. This area includes rock art made by people who lived there more than 2000 years ago. Yet many people today cannot see the Maze District because it is so difficult to reach. The area is one of the loneliest, and wildest in the United States.

Another area of the park is called the Needles. It includes long, thin, red and white rocks that reach high into the air like fingers on a hand.

A good way to see all the areas of Canyonlands National Park is to fly over it. A one-hour trip in a small airplane makes it possible to see the park’s red rocks, flat areas where ancient Indian people once lived.

From high in the air, visitors can clearly see the third area of the park—a high broad flat rock known as the Island in the Sky. The island was formed between two rivers. Another interesting formation is called the Upheaval Dome. This is a huge hole about 450 meters deep and 1.5 kilometers wide. It is considered to be the most unusual geologic (地质) structure in the area.

10. What do we know about the Maze District?

A. No one is allowed to explore the area.

B. It remains unknown to the outside world.

C. Its rock art dates back over 2000 years.

D. It is the loneliest and wildest place in the world.

11. In order to have a good view of the whole park, the author suggests you go sightseeing _________.

A. by air

B. by car

C. by water

D. on foot

12. Which of the following has the unique geologic structure in Canyonlands National Park?

A. The Island in the Sky.

B. The Upheaval Dome.

C. The Needles.

D. The Maze District.

13. What can we learn from the passage?

A. You can see red and white rocks like fingers in the Upheaval Dome.

B. Visitors from other parts of America entered the area in early 1950s.

C. The Needles was formed between Green and Colorado Rivers.

D. Three separate areas surround Green and Colorado Rivers in the park.

D.

TUV ALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the sea.

Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu’s nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level. Salt water is already entering the countr y’s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable.

15.______________.

16.____________ Venice, a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50cm by 2050. A century ago, St. Mark’s Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year, Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, Tuvalu’s rising sea level is caused by global warming.

The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century; scientists expect it to rise by extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.

Warmer weather makes glaciers melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10-25 cm in the last 100 years.

17.____________ Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.

Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes. 18.___________

19. __________, the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with “climate refugees” looking for somewhere to live.

A. The main cause of global warming is human pollution

B. Without urgent help, the country’s days are numbered

C. The sea level could rise by one meter this century

D. people face a lot of pollution

E. But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea

F. much has been done to our planet

G. Should this come true
