When I was 8 years old, I decided to run away from home after a fight with my mother. With my suitcase(手提箱) and some sandwiches in a bag, I started for the front door.

My mom asked where I was going. “I’m leaving home,” I said.

“What’s that you’re carrying?” she asked.

“Some clothes and food,” I replied.

“If you want to run away, that’s all right,”she said. “But you came into this home without anything and you can leave the same way.”

I threw my suitcase and sandwiches on the floor and started for the door again.

“Wait a minute,” Mom said. “You didn’t have any clothes on when you arrived, and I want them back.”

This made me completely mad. I pulled my clothes off---shoes, socks, underwear and all---and shouted, “Can I go now?”

“Yes,” my mom answered, “but once you close that door, don’t expect to come back.”

I was so angry that I shut the door rudely and stepped out of my home. Then I noticed down the street two neighbor girls walking toward our house. I was terribly shy so I jumped as quickly as possible under the big tree in our yard. You can’t imagine what a real shame it was for me at that moment.

After I was sure the girls had passed by, I ran to the front door and knocked at it loudly.“It’s Billy! Let me in!”

The voice behind the door answered, “Billy doesn’t live here anymore. He ran away from home.”

“Mom! I’m sorry, I’m still your son. Let me in!”

The door opened and Mom’s smiling face appeared. “Did you change your mind about

running away, my dear?” she asked.

“What’s for supper?” I smiled back.

A group of teenagers: they laugh and talk over each other, dance and make goofy faces---you wouldn’t think they had played the same as famous American singers Kid Cudi and Eminem. These seven kids, all under the age of 20, are members of the band Kids These Days (KTD). Fresh out of high school, the band has already achieved things that most teens couldn’t even imagine. They played at festivals including the recent SXSW in Austin and Lollapalooza in their hometown, Chicago, to a large fan base.

KTD uses a mix of hip-hop, jazz, soul, blues and classic rock to create a sound that is very special.

“Kids These Days simply mix most, if not all of my favorite kinds of music into one big masterpiece,” said Kamia Jones, a Chicago-area high school senior. “I like that they aren’t afraid to be different, and that their music is real and speaks to the soul(灵魂).”

The band formed two years ago in the basement(地下室) of one of the lead singers, Liam Cunningham. Now they are becoming popular around the world. Their Facebook page is filled with supportive posts from fans from California to Portugal.

“It’s really strange to me that people from London, Australia and Russia...They’ve heard of us and they like our music. It’s a really cool feeling,” says Macie Stewart, who plays the keyboard and is a singer for the band.

KTD is a group of normal teenagers and they remain very close to one another. While talking to reporters, they dance and make fun of each other.

When asked what advice they would give to other teen musicians, Greg Landfair Jr, KTD’s drummer, said: “Keep your heart in it. Never lose the music and what you’re doing, because that’s what you’re here for. Let the music always be first.”

“Millions of young people WILLLOSE their hearing in five years if they listen to MP3 players at a too high voice every day.” EU scientists warn recently.

Another new shocking national study in US has also found that nearly half of teens show some signs of hearing loss because of their experiencing some risky hearing activities, including listening to loud music.

The study compared surveys from nearly 3,000 kids tested in 1990s to nearly 1,800 kids tested over the mid-2000s.The first survey showed that about 15 percent of teenagers had some degree of hearing loss. Some 15 years later, that number had risen to nearly 20 percent. And in a recent U.S survey of 500 teenagers aged 13~19, 46 percent of teens are showing some signs of hearing loss. Now what do you think of the news? Do you often listen to MP3 players at a high voice while you are riding? Are you taking risks of hearing loss?

Some researchers are encouraging teenagers to turn down their music players like MP3 or iPod. “ Loud noise is likely to cause the problems, ” they say.

“Few people would call it noise when they listen to music on their MP3 player. However, there is actually a difference between what we think is loud and what is harmful to the ears.” said Alison Grimes, an ear doctor. “It doesn’t mean kids can’t listen to mp3 players, but it is really necessary for young kids to turn down the sound and take short breaks from listening.” Grimes added. “Teenagers really don’t pay attention to it, but even slight (轻微的) hearing loss may influence language development as well as their later life. A teenager with slight hearing loss might miss some sounds such as t, k and s. And they might not be able to hear their mother whispering (低语)‘good night’.”Dr. Gary Curhan of Harvard also worries a lot.

One of Curhan’s patients, 16-year-old Mathew Brady recently has trouble hearing his friends in school cafe. And Curhan believes that Brady’s hearing problem was caused by listening to an iPod turned up too loud and for too long.

“I laugh when they laugh,” Brady said.

Although his hearing returned little by little, it was never the same.

“Do not make your iPod too loud,” Brady said. “It’s only going to hurt your hearing. I learned t his the hard way.”

12. Paragraph 3 mainly shows us that _____.

A. thousands of teenagers volunteered to take part in the test

B. there are different hearing problems in different times in US

C. teens’ hearing problem at the end of last century was very serious

D. the numbers of teens’ hearing loss have increased terribly quickly

13. The opinion of Alison Grimes about hearing loss is that _____.

A. loud noise is the most important reason of hearing loss

B. it is different between what is loud to us and to the ears

C. teenagers should stop listening to music on MP3 player

D. loud music causes most of teenagers to loss their hearing

14. Dr. Gary Curhan has been so worried because _____.

A. few people notice the bad influence of hearing loss

B. teens’ language development is slower and slower

C. so many teenagers can’t hear the sounds like s, t or k

D. kids might miss their Moms’ “Good night” in the future

15. The article was written _____.

A. to explain to us why noise is bad for the ears

B. to warn teens that loud music might be harmful

C. to show how important hearing can be for learning

D. to suggest that teenagers shouldn’t listen to loud music

For centuries across the world, moms have been homemakers while dads have been breadwinners (负担家计的人). However, a recent report shows a milestone (里程碑) change in the social roles of mothers and fathers. The new findings, from the US government’s Current Population Survey, show more women in the workplace and fewer stay-at-home mothers in the country. For the first time, American women have passed men in getting college degrees since more women than men went to college in the 1980s, according to the survey. Among adults aged 25 and older, 10.6 million US women have master’s degrees or higher, compared to 10.5 million men. When it comes to finishing college, about 20.1 million American women have bachelor’s degrees. The number for men is nearly 18.7 million. The gap of more than 1.4 million has remained steady in recent years. American women first passed men in bachelor’s degrees in 1996. Women’s educational achievements are giving them greater chances for a wider choice of jobs. This is contributing to a change in traditional gender roles at home and work. The new “Mr. Moms” include Todd Krater, 38, of Lakemoor, Illinois. He has been a stay-at-home dad for the past seven years to his three sons after his wife, who earned a master’s business degree, began to succeed in her career as a software expert. Krater said he found it difficult adjusting at first and got little support from other mothers at school events. In his blog, “A Man among Mommies”, Krater encourages other fathers to take a larger role in child care and says he now feels happy to see more dads at the park, library and school. “What was once an uncommon sight of a dad with the kids during the day is becoming more and more common,” said Krater. “But many still feel the pressure of gender roles and feel if they don’t make money they are somehow less of a man.” Jeremy Adam Smith, author of the 2009 book The Daddy Shift, believes that more stay-at-home dads will appear. “In the long term, the numbers of Mr. Moms are just going to keep going up,” Smith said. 1.
