二、阅读理解 A

A good teacher is many things to many people. In my own experience, the people I respect

the most and think about the most are the teachers who demanded (要求) the most discipline (纪律) from their students.

I miss one teacher in particular that I had in high school. I think she was a good teacher

because she was a very strict person. I remember very vividly (清晰地) a sign over her classroom door. It was a simple sign that said, “Laborato ry—in this room the first five letters of the word was emphasized (强调), not the last seven.” In other words, I guess, labor(工作) for her was more important than oratory, which means making speeches.

She prepared her work very carefully and demanded of us to do the same. We got lots of homework from her. Once she had broken her arm, and everybody in the class thought that maybe the homework load would be reduced, but it continued just the same. She checked our work by stamping her name at the bottom of the papers to show that she had read them.

I think sometimes teachers who demand the most are liked the least. But as time goes by, this

discipline really seems to benefit (有益于) the students.

21. Which of the following is considered a good teacher by the writer?

A. A patient teacher.

B. An honest teacher.

C. A strict teacher.

D. A hard-working teacher.

22. The teacher put up the sign over her classroom door .

A. to remind the students that this room was a laboratory

B. to advise the students to follow the disciplines

C. to warn the students not to be careless

D. to tell the students to work hard in the classroom

23. When the teacher’s arm wa s broken, she .

A. gave her students the usual amount of homework

B. gave her students less homework

C. asked her students to check the homework themselves

D. gave her students more homework

24. What’s the writer’s opinion of dis cipline?

A. It makes the students dislike their teachers.

B. It does good to the students in the long run.

C. It’s too much for young children.

D. It does more harm than good to the students.

B

Our surroundings are being polluted faster than man's present efforts to prevent pollution. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities and the growing use of man-made materials.

What can explain and solve the problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man--by his desire for a modern way of life. We make “increasing industrialization” our chief aim. So we are often ready to offer everything:clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant(连续不断的)flow of people from the countryside into the cities, eager for the benefits of our modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.

Isn't it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going--and why? It makes one think of the story of the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loudspeaker, “I've some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we are making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we are lost and can't know where we are going.” The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when we speak of our modern society.

25. According to the writer, more and more people crowd into large cities because they _______.

A. are tired of their present life

B. want to help find a comfortable place to work in

C. hope to change their way of life

D. wish to enjoy the achievements of the society

26. According to the passage, now man values _______ most in their life.

A. health

B. the future of the society

C. industry

D. beautiful surroundings

27. The story about the airline pilot tells us that _______.

A. the writer is worried about the future of our society

B. man can hardly know the future of the society

C. people are not satisfied with the development of the society

D. little can be done to get rid of pollution

It said that all men had the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Not every citizen of the new United States of America had one important right, however. That was the right to vote. She believed that women needed economic and personal independence. She also believed that there was no hope for social improvement in the United States until women were given the same rights as men. The rights included the right to vote in public elections. Susan B. Anthony was born in eighteen twenty. Her parents were members of the Quaker religion. She became one, too. The Quakers believed that the rights of women should be honored. They were the first religious group where women shared the leadership with men. 1. His mother had kept on hinting that there would be a big surprise for him during the vacation. Kevin took out his scrapbook (剪贴簿). The exams had just finished, and summer vacation had just started. Now he was free as a bird — free to draw, paint, play basketball, and watch television…anything he wanted to do. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, startling (使惊吓) him. It was his pain of a cousin, Max. “Hi!” screamed Max as he jumped on Kevin’s bed. “I have come to stay here for the holidays.” Kevin had never expected his mother’s surprise to be this bad. If this was the start of his vacation, then the next few weeks were going to be the worst experience of his life. The next few days were horrible for Kevin. After breakfast, Kevin decided to make a painting. Luckily, Max was not around. Kevin spread out all his art supplies and started painting some beautiful scenery. When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a Pepsi bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling Pepsi all over the painting and totally ruining it. The next day was even worse. Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes. One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world famous philatelist (集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.” This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.

If Arvada’s team lost, the mayor of Arvada would send the mayor of Boulder ten pounds of sliced potat oes, ready for frying. If Boulder’s team lost, the mayor would send ten pounds of sliced tomatoes, ready for sandwiches or salads. Unfortunately, before the game started, the mayor of Boulder happened to hear the Arvada mayor tell someone: “They grow t he worst tomatoes. If they lose and send us their tomatoes, I’m going to give them all to my pig.” The mayor of Boulder was upset to hear this, because he thought Boulder’s tomatoes were the best in the state. So he gave the matter some thought. The following week, the big game was played. Boulder lost its star quarterback in the first half when he tripped (绊倒) over a cheerleader and hurt his big toe. The quarterback sadly watched the rest of the game from the bench. His team ended up losing, 38 to 12. The two mayors shook hands after the game, and the Arvada mayor said, “I’m really looking forward to those tomatoes.” As the Boulder team left the stadium, some unhappy fans threw ripe tomatoes at them. A week later, the mayor of Arvada received a package of beautifully sliced tomatoes. He took them straight to his pig, which ate them right up.
