第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下面四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Crime is a serious problem in Britain. One sort of crime which particularly worries people is juvenile (青少年) crime---that is, crimes committed by young people. For some years, juvenile crime has been increasing. There are two main sorts of juvenile crime: stealing and violence. Most people do not understand why young people commit these crimes. There are, I think, a large number of different reasons.

These crimes are not usually committed by people who are poor or in

need. Young people often dislike and hate the adult world. They will do things to show that they are rebels. Also in Britain today it is easier for young people to commit crimes because they have more freedom to go where they like and more money to do what they like.

There are two other possible causes which are worth mentioning. More and more people in Britain live in large towns. In a large town no one knows who anyone else is or where they live. But in the village I come from crimes are rare because everyone knows everyone else.

Although it is difficult to explain, I think the last cause is very important. Perhaps there is something wrong with our society which encourages violence and crime . It is a fact that all the crime children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people don?t agree that this influences young people, but I think that young people are very much influenced by the society they grow up in. I feel that the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people.

46. How many causes of juvenile crime are mentioned in the text?

A. Two

B. Three

C. Four

D. Five

47. According to the passage which young group from Britain is least likely to

commit crimes?

A. Adults in big cities.

B. Adults who are in great need of help.

C. Young people in big cities.

D. Young people in the countryside.

48. In the last paragraph, the underlined part “our society which encourages

violence and crime” means .

A. people don?t care much about violence and crime

B. the people who commit crimes are not punished severely

C. some criminals escaped being punished

D. social environment has a bad effect on young people

49. What is the main meaning of the passage?

A. Different kinds of juvenile crimes.

B. The causes of juvenile crime.

C. Increasing crime rate in Britain.

D. Stealing and violence in Britain.

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmen and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such

as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom, …Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it??”says Ballmer. There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbit (活动范围).

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”

But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.

“There?s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,”says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say(要说的话).

“My parents were on the …before? side of that change, but today?s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the …after?side,”explains Mr.Ballmen. “It?s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

50. The underlined word “gulf” in paragraph 3 most probably means .

A. interest

B. distance

C. separation

D. difference

51. By saying “today?s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the …after? side,” the

author means that today?s parents .

A. can set a limit to the change

B. follow the trend of the change

C. fail to take the change seriously

D. have little difficulty adjusting to the change

52. The purpose of the passage is to .

A. describe the difficulties today?s parents have met with

B. suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship

C. discuss the developments of the parent-child relationship

D. compare today?s parent-child relationship with that in the past

C

Support for renewable energy technology to fight global warming is weakening in the face of worldwide economic problems and the true scale of the carbon reductions required, a survey published today has suggested.

Figures presented at the UN climate talks in Poznan, Poland, show that climate expert have less faith in alternative energy than they did 12 months ago.

The survey shows less support for wind energy, solar power, biofuels, biomass(生物量) and hydrogen energy as technologies with “high potential(高潜力)” to reduce carbon levels in the atmosphere over the next 25 years.

Eric Whan of Globescan, which carried out the survey of “climate decision makers”, said: “As the climate crisis deepens (变浓,强烈) they could be becoming less optimistic that individual technologies may be able to solve the problem.”

The survey, supported by groups including the World Bank, the United Nations Environment Programme and the Pew Centre for Global Climate Change, questioned 1,000 senior figures across governments, pressure groups and companies in 115 countries over the last few weeks.

Almost three-quarters of the experts agreed in the survey that “equitable(公平的,公正的)economic growth and development and significant progress in combating(战斗)climate change can be achieved at the same time.”

Asked to rate the likely success of low-carbon technologies in the mid-term, they showed less confidence than a similar survey 12 months ago. Support for offshore wind farms, was down to 61% last year. Solar electricity generation was rated as having high-potential by 66% of respondents(回应), down from 74% . Support for hydrogen power was 32%, down from 36% in 2007.

The respondents also warned that a deep recession(衰退) would make a new global deal on climate harder to achieve. Some 44% agreed that the current economic crisis will significantly delay or compromise(折中)the “achievements of effective climate change agreements”.

53. Which of the following is NOT the alternative energy?

A. Wind energy.

B. Solar power.

C. Hydrogen energy.

D. Conventional(普通的)energy.

54. Which of the following alternative energy sees the most remarkable

reduction in support?

A. Offshore wind farms.

B. Solar electricity.

C. Hydrogen power.

D. Natural gas.

55. Why is support for renewable energy technology to fight global warming

weakening?

A. The technology has no use at all.

B. People don?t want to use the technology.

C. Nothing can be done to reduce carbon levels in the atmosphere.

D. The current economic crisis is to blame.

56. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Experts lose faith in renewable technology.

B. Global environment is worsening.

C. Who is to blame for the environment?

D. What can be done to save the earth?

D

“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.”

“Two full inches in the first three days!”

These are the kinds of statements used in magazines, newspapers, radios and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device (器具,设备). The promoters of such products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to beauty or desirability.

Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoters. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.

To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA (Food and Drug Administration )can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require remarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market has danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure (查封) of the product.

One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the waist through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it

was dangerous to health and life.

Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court procedure (法律诉讼), and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to identify the safety or effectiveness of such items.

57. It can be inferred that ads mentioned in the text are .

A. objective

B. costly

C. unreliable

D. illegal

58. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous product.

B. New products are more likely to be questionable.

C. The production of a device must be approved by FDA.

D. The promoters usually just care about profits

59. FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product .

A. if it is a drug

B. if it is a device

C. if it is consumers make complaints

D. if its distributors challenge FDA?s authority

60. The author intends to .

A. make consumers aware of the promoters? false promises

B. show the weakness of the law on product safety

C. give advice on how to keep young and beautiful

D. introduce the organization of FDA

第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从下框的A---F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余项。

Asakawa, 45, has spent the past eight years making the Internet a friendly place for people who can?t see. In 1997 her research group at IBM Japan put out one of th e world?s first browsers(浏览者)specifically made to read aloud the contents of Web pages. And last July, her team released software that helps Web designers figure out how to make their home pages accessible to people with poor or no eyesight.

2.

Accessibility is a serious issue. The Internet is becoming an increasingly

important source of information and services. For people who are blind, the Internet lets them do things on their own for which they previously needed a lot of help, like going shopping.

3.

At age 11, Asakawa accidentally hit her head on the side of a pool while swimming, damaging her optic (视觉的) nerves. Three years later, she was completely blind. At a vocational (职业的) school for the blind, Asakawa learned to program in various computer languages. To read code printouts she used a device that translated the code into raised letters sensed with fingers. It was a struggle. She recalls, “But it was possible.”

4.

In the mid-1900s, she began surfing the Internet, using a combination of software that could read out what was on the screen. But there were problems: the system only could read English. On-screen fill-out forms stumped the reader, and tables with vertical (垂直的) columns came out as gibberish (令人费解). Asakawa decided to develop software specifically designed to handle the coding used for Web pages. She inserted aural cues (暗示) to help browsing, like using a man?s voice for text and woman?s for links. In 1997 she put out IBM?s first Home Page Reader in Japanese, then in English followed by nice other languages.

5.

Asakawa is now doing basic research on using the sense of touch to direct the attention of the blind, as colors do for the sighted. She hopes this kind of research will also be useful for people with normal vision. “Sighted people don?t use the sense of touch very much,” she laughs, “What a waste!”
