Everybody knows that the favorite food in the United States is the hamburger. It seems impossible, but people eat 34,000,000,000 hamburgers a year. This is enough to make a line of hamburgers around the world four times.

The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast-food restaurant. In these restaurants, people order their food, wait just a few minutes and carry it to their tables themselves. They can eat it in the restaurant or take the food out and eat it at home ,at work,or in a park.At some restaurants people can drive up beside a window. They order the food, and a worker hands it to them through the window. Then they eat in their car.

Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-foodrestaruants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef, sandwiches,or Mexican food. They also serve fries(French fried potatoes),shakes(a drink made from milk and ice cream),soft drinks, and coffee.

Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than the quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same .People know that if they eat at a company’s restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same,if they eat in New Y ork or San Francisco,it will still be the same.

Going to court can be frightening, especially if you are a child.Y ou may have to stand up in the witnesss box,and swear to tell the truth and answer questions in front of a crowd of adults. It would be even more frightening if you were the victim of a crime and you had to sit in the same courtroom as the person accused of attacking you,for instance.

So the law in Britain has made it easier for children to act as witnesses.Children are allowed to tell what they know, from another room in the same courthouse.in this way they do not have to face all those people in the courtroom.

It works on a closed-circuit(閉路的)televiseon link, which means that the TV only operates inside the court. The child witnesss sits in a room with a social worker in front of a TV camera.Everyone in the courtroom can see the child on a TV screen, but the child can only see the judge and the lawyers who will ask him or her questions. The system has been so successful that it will be extended to more courts this year.

Another way to make it easy for a child to act a witnesss is to set up a screen in the court room around the witnesss box so that the child cannot see the defendant(被告).

Information given by children can be very important to a courtrial, but before 1988th e law did not really recognize that children told the truth .It stated that anything a child said in court had to be supported by other evidence in the case.

Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected him deeplymand he sat unhappily in his office doing littlee. He lost interest in his research.Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.

In the years following World War I honors were increasingly given to him.He became the head of the Kaiser Whihem Institute on Theoretical Physics. In 1921he won the Nobel Prize, and he

was honored in Germany until the rise of Nazism when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.

First-time dog owners may have many problems getting to know and train their pets.Sometimes a puppy,or even an older dog ,will chew their fingers or bite them.Even in play, this can really hurt.Unfortunately, many pet owners tolerate this in a young dog .However, when the dog gets larger,it is not fun to be bitten by it.Training a dog never to place his teeth on human skin or clothing is an important lesson. From now on ,if you feel your dog’s teeth while you are playing with him,say “Ouch”in a loud voice and move away from him.He will soon learn that when he bites, you will not play with him any more.

Another bad habit that many people tolerate in their pets is allowing them to bite and hold on to clothing.Don’t let your dog do this to you. When he does something you want him to do ,praise him and tell him he’s a good dog.Y ou can also give him a treat at the same time he performs the good behaveor.Eventually he will learn which kind of behaveor is acceptable and which is not.Remember that erward is more effective than punishment. If you reward your dog when he does what you want,he will become very well behaved. Also remember that puppies need to chew on something. So give him a sock with a knot tied in ti or an old shoe.If he chews the wrong thing ,take it away while saying “No”and give him something he can chew.If dogs are trained well, they will truly be your friends for a lifetime.

Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal,he begins to think about an overcoat;when a manager gets a new sports car,a big house and pleasure boats dance into view.

The many needs of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears.

The first and most basic level of needs involves food.Once this level is satisfyied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears.By the end of World War II,these needs were satisfyied for a great majority of Americans. Then the third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfyied. Then ,in the late 1950s,the fourth level of needs appeared:the “life-enriching”level.While the other levels involve physical satisfyion, that is ,the need for comfort ,safety ,and transportation, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happinesss. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury”items.Among them are vacateon trips ,the best medical and dental care ,and recreateon. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest styles in clothing.

On the fourth level,a lot of money is spent on services, while on the ferst three levels more is spent on goods .Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases,or will they continue to demand luxuryes and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action.Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs ,our clothes closets ,our garages ,our teeth ,and our minds,we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

Wedding ceremonyes in the United States vary as much as the people do.But many weddings,no matter where or how they are performed, include certain traditional customs. For instance, the bride and groom often exchanged rings at the ceremony. The rings are usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, and are exchanged in the middle of the ceremony.Today, the ring shows the couple’s love for one another.

After the ceremony, the couple is often showered with handfuls of uncooked rice by friends and family.Rice,as we know ,shows productiveity and harvest. And then, there is often a party, where the food is so plenty that it almost takes the attention away from the people.Soon the bride stands in the center of the room, often on a chair, and throws her flowers to the unmarried women at the party.Tradition says that whoever catches the flowers will be the next bride. Some women eagerly try to catch the flower;others shy away.

And then it is time for the bride and groom to set off the tradition of a honeymoon,a trip after the wedding. The trip nowadays varies greatly by wealth ,time and preference.Sometimes the couple will spend a single night at a nearby hotel;or they may spend two weeks at a faraway foreign city as well .

When John Milton, writer of “Paradise Lost”,entered Cambridge University in 1625,he was already skilled in Latin after seven years of studying it as his second language at St.Pant’s School,London.Like all English boys who prepared for college in grammar school,he had learned not only to read Latin but also to speak and write it fluently and correctly. His pronunciation of Latin was English ,however, and seemed to have sounded strange to his friends when he later visited Italy.

Classroom Culture Shock

V isiting teachers in China must deal with a lot of challenges. Many of them are expected-language barrier, different values and beliefs, chopsticks.Others are surprising-the hazards of crossing the street, the stares, chou doufu(臭豆腐).We learn a few Chinese phrases, develop a strategy for crossing the street safely, and avoid the stalls selling chou doufu.A greater challenge, however, lies in the classroom.

I recall walking confidently to my first Oral English class five years ago, armed with all the modern methody I learned in school and a lesson plan stolen from an ESL expert. But something went terribly wrong. My initial instructions were greeted by wide-eyed wonder and silence, followed by giggles, ending in nervous chatter that didn’t sound completely friendly.I couldn’t understand what went wrong. All I had asked them to do was throw their books in the

corner, push all the desks away ,and put their chairs in a circle.

After that first two-hour class, which must have lasted at least four,I needed to go home, lie down, and ponder these surprising new developments.A couple of things occurred to me at that time.First,I still had a lot to learn.Second,it was the students, not me this time ,with culture shock.

I took it upon myself to observe some more “tradition al”English classes and saw very few traces of the techniques I planed to use .I still believed in the effectiveness of a student-centered,communicative approach, but I realized that it would be a struggle to implement. My first class had been a shock ,to students and teacher,so for the next class I was more forthcoming in what I expected, and why .I wasn’t sure about China, but I knew in America I would be fired for forcing open a student’s mouth until the words tell out,so I explained that speaking English was something only they could take responsibility for.Minor shocks were again dealt when I confessed I had nothing new to teach them and that I would try to speak as littlee as possible. This all took a littlee more chewing than expected, but they seemed to swallow it and were willing to try things my way.

Then they circled the chairs and with eager nods they listened as I introduced the lesson.Groups were formed and tasks assigned.Any minute now lively discussion and debate would be in full swing .Only, once again, the classroom had fallen silent.Nobody wanted to say anything.

I canceled the following class and instead met with each student individualy in my oncampus apartment.I was determined to get to the bottom of this. What I found was a group of intelligent young people with all the skills to speak proper English and none of the confidence.Understanding this,I took a more nurturing tone in the classroom.I became more of a kindhearted coach than a

teacher. The smallest of successes were acknowledged and praised.Mistakes were noted, but not publicly corrected.Everybody was encouraged to take part, and even the shy girls in the corner were willing to say a few words of English.By the end of the term I could hear English being spoken before I even entered the room.A breakthrough had been made.

In the past five years I have noticed a growing awareness in Chinese college students.More and more of them realize their time and effort spent studying English has littlee value if they do not use it to communicate.I still hear the lament that English is merely a tool, but it is said with the understanding that owning a hammer does not make you a master carpenter.Great progresss has been made in embracing English as a living language. Now,if I could only develop a taste for chou doufu.
