阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

In the morning Mother and I travel together to work. Rising at the crack of dawn.

I love the adventure of tiptoeing around in the dark living room where we sleep, whispering to each other so as not to wake Aunt Celia and Uncle Martin in the bedroom, then leaving the house soundlessly and making our way to the subway station in semidarkness.

By the time we reach the empty and quiet Kings Highway, which is usually swarming with human traffic, there is a sense of mystery—a sense of power—in being here before the rest of the world awakens…as if witnessing the beginning of time.

We love travelling together on the subway, Mother an d I. It’s fun to observe our fellow subway rider, exchange jokes and asides in Hungarian, play guessing games as to their identities, their ages, and their jobs and make bets as to where they’d be getting off.

In a couple of weeks Mother becomes familiar with the train route, and she no longer allows me to accompany her.

“But I’ll miss the fun of traveling together in the morning,” I protest.

“So will I. But it comes at a sacrifice. In order to accompany me, you must rise an hour earlier, losing an hour’s sleep. You need that extra hour of sleep.” Mother is firm, and I have no choice but to obey and regretfully give up on our morning fun.

“I hope you’ll have time to teach me English. Now that I have a job and travel alone on the sideway, I’ll need to improve my vocabulary. I don’t want to depend on you every time I need to make a phone call in English, or want to take public transport.”

“Okay, madam,” I agree in a happy tone. “How about today? Let’s have our first lesson this evening!”

Every evening I help Mother with vocabulary and grammar, and indeed in a couple of weeks she learns enough English to do marketing on her own and travel freely by subway.

21.The underlined words “swarming with human traffic” means_____________.

A. the street is crowded with people

B. the street is covered with rubbish

C. people are raising their voices there

D. drivers are honking their horns there

It was named the worst place in Britain to live. But now Hull has been selected as one of the world’s top 10 cities to visit in the travel guide company Rough Guides’ list.

The city in the English county of Yorkshire was honored 12 years after the book Crap Towns named it as the worst place in Britain to live. But why has the opinion of Hull changed so much? One of the biggest reasons is the appreciation of its many cultural attractions, just in time for Hull to be the UK’s City of Culture in 2017.

On its website, Rough Guides explained why it had chosen Hull in its list. “ It’ll be full of new hotels and restaurants, and even more of that home-grown creativity the city has always had,” It wrote. Indeed, Hull is famous for its historical pubs, like Ye Ode White Harte, the place where the decision to start the English Civil Wars of 1642 to 1651 was taken. But it is not just known as a city of pubs nowadays.

Hull is now praised for its building, too, like the interesting design of the Scale Lane Bridge, known as the “ pinball flippers(弹球板)” because it looks like part of a pinball machine. Hull’s biggest tourist attraction, the aquarium known as “ The Deep”, is also well-known for the design of its glass and aluminum (铝) building. The aquarium, which opened in 2002, was designed by Sir Terry Farrell to look like a big shark’s head.

This year’s cultural event will end with the 2016 September Freedom Festival, when the whole city will be turned into a stage for performers and artists from Sept 2 to 4. The event’s website describes it as a mixture of “ theater, music, comedy, poetry and outdoor performances aimed at a wide audience of all ages”. What could be a better way to celebrate the city’s amazing journey from bottom to top?

24.According to the author, the buildings in Hull ____________.

A. have attracted people with their designs

B. are known for their special building materials

C. have all been inspired by animal in their designs

D. have been rebuilt on the sites of historical buildings

25.What can we conclude about the September Freedom Festival?

A.All the performances will be staged indoors.

B.The event will offer a great variety of performances.

C.Hull organizes similar cultural events all year round.

D.Young people will be the main audience for this event.

26.The author wrote this article mainly to_____________.

A. introduce the 2016 September Freedom Festival

B. tell people not to miss Hull when they tour the UK

C. ask other cities to learn from Hull’s experience.

D. explain what is behind Hull’s big change

California Condor’s Shocking Recovery

California condors are North America’s

largest birds, with wind-length of up to 3 meters.

In the 1980s, electrical lines and lead

poisoning(铅中毒) nearly drove them to dying out. Now, electric shock training and medical treatment are helping to rescue these big birds.

In the late 1980s, the last few condors were taken from the wild, and there are now more than 150 flying over California and nearby Arizona, Utah and Baja in Mexico.

Electrical lines have been killing them off. “As they go in to rest for the nig ht, they just don’t see the power lines,” says Bruce Rideout of San Diego Zoo. Their wings can bridge the gap between lines, resulting in electrocution(电死) if they touch two lines at once.

So scientists have come up with a shocking idea. Tall poles, placed in large training areas, teach the birds to stay clear of electrical lines by giving them a painful but undeadly electric shock. Before the training was introduced, 66% of set-freed condors died of electrocution. This has now dropped to 18%.

Lead poisonous has proved more difficult to deal with. When condors eat dead bodies of other animals containing lead, they absorb large quantities of lead. This affects their nervous systems and ability to produce baby birds, and can lead to kidney(肾) failures and death. So condors with high levels of lead are sent to Los Angeles Zoo, where they are treated with calcium EDTA, a chemical that removes lead from the blood over several days. This work is starting to pay off. The annual death

rate for adult condors has dropped from 38% in 2000 to 5.4% in 2011.

Rideout’s team thinks that the California condors’ average survival time in the wild is now just under eight years. “Altho ugh these measures are not effective forever, they are vital for now,” he says. “They are truly good birds that are worth every effort we put into recovering them. ”

27.California condors attract researchers’ interest because they ______________.

A. are active at night

B. had to be bred in the wild

C. are found on in California

D. almost died out in the 1980s

28.Researchers have found electrical lines are ______________.

A. blocking condors’ journey home

B. big killers of California condors

C. rest places for condors at night

D. used to keep condors away

29.According to Paragraph 5, lead poisoning _______________.

A. makes condors too nervous to fly

B. has little effect on condors’ kidneys

C. can hardly be gotten rid of form condors’ blood

D. makes it different for condors to produce baby birds

30.The passage shows that ________________.

A. the average survival time of condors is satisfactory

B. Rideout’s research interest lies in electric engineering

C. the efforts to protect condors have brought good results

D. researchers have found the final answers to the problem

Safety Tips for GPS Location-Sharing

Most “smart phones” allow you to run location-sharing software that uses the phone’s GPS capability to let friends and family know your exact location. There are lots of great uses for this technology. 31 So make sure you’re

permitted to use an app or service, and pay attention to how you are using it. Here’re some important points you may find helpful.

Choose what’s best for you. Some location-sharing services are games that let you give a shout-out when you’ve turned up at a particular spot. 32 Still others continue to share your location until you change the setting. Be sure you know exactly how your service shares your location.

Know who your friends are. 33 This means people can search to see if you’re online and add you as a friend. It’s important to remember that sharing your location with people you’ve never met in real life is risky, so you should carefully manage friend requests and share your location only with people you know and trust.

Check back often. Some services automatically stop sending your location after a period of time, but others will send it forever – until you stop it. Review your contact list periodically and delete anyone to whom you no longer feel comfortable revealing your location.

34 Location-based services are a great way for teens to let parents know where they are without having to call or text. Check-ins ease worries so they don’t h ave to follow your every move. If you’re heading home late at night, you can also use a service like Glympse to share your location as you drive, so they’ll know if you have car trouble or get stuck in traffic. 35

A.Update parents.

B.It can be an easy way to find your friends and be found by them.

C.Some location services operate like Facebook, where you invite and accept

friends.

D.Others show where you are all the time or for a period of time you set.

E.However, these services are not for all children.

F.With its help, you can easily share your location with them.

A On a Saturday night at home while relaxing with friends, a dog showed up at the house. In an attempt to find the legal owner and return the dog, we knocked on the door of the legal owner and an old man opened the door. This was the start of an interesting week. The old man sat down, made himself at home, and gifted us the dog. After a brief visit, he left, and we were now the proud owners of this dog. It takes experience and knowledge to know that our lifestyle can’t satisfy the needs of this dog; the owner that gifted us the dog was mismatched for him as well. Three attempts to return the dog to his old owner failed. (I think he was avoiding us.) Because our lifestyle didn’t allow us to give this poor dog the attention he needed, he disturbed the neighbors. They got involved. After we shared the story, they gained a new perspective and wisely stepped in to help us find a solution. One week later it was decided that dog would be picked up from us by the old neighbor. He would then return it to the previous owner who was more equipped to care for it. When faced with unexpected challenges in life, it helps to see everyo ne’s perspective. We have to look at one another’s perspective to solve a problem with honesty, experience and knowledge. That’s the sign of a leader. Although the old neighbor typically has little to do with leadership, it did bring a neighborhood together to understand one another and work as a team to solve a problem. 1. Why was the dog taken to the author’s home? A. To find food to eat. B. To seek a proper owner. C. The author was friendly to him. D. The old man couldn’t feed him. 2. What did the author find after he was gifted with the dog?

A “I am not an American,” mark twain (1835-1910) once said, “I am the American.” He had good reason to say so. A Nobel winner in literature, US playwright Eugene O’ Neill called him “the father of American literature”. Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media often praise him. But when you actually take the time to read the adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was first published 140 years ago, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever have imagined. The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical – a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure. More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses Tom to make fun of religion and its old traditions. “Often, the less there is to justify a traditional custom, the ha rder it is to get rid of it,” he writes in one chapter. Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical points about culture and politics. That’s why he is so loved in the US –he wasn’t afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly. For instance, Twain didn’t like US wars abroad. In 1900, after the US invaded the Philippines, Twain wrote in a newspaper article: “We do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines… We have gone there to conquer.” He also believed strongly in wo men’s right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.
