During her sixty-year career performing, Lena Horne entertained people with her beauty and rich, emotional voice. She used her fame to fight social injustices(不公平) toward African-Americans.

Lena Horne was born in New York in 1917. At sixteen, Lena became a dancer at the famous club in New York City. After taking voice lessons, she soon became a singer. Listening should NOT be taken for granted(理所当然的), as it’s often thought in conversation between two or more people, that one person talking means others are listening. Sadly, this is not the truth in a variety of situations. People can get distracted from other people’s voices, by their own thoughts, by creating a plan of what to say next, or by many other variables.

Surely listening is not a looking-on sport and listening skills do affect our social, emotional and professional success.

Active listening is a communication technique that requires the listeners to understand and evaluate what they heard. As a type of structured way of talking, especially between two people, where focus is on truly hearing the communications of the other person, it’s a conversation model used in many settings. The ability to listen actively can improve personal relationships through reducing conflicts, strengthening cooperation and improving understanding.

Listening is NOT the same as hearing! Hearing is the first part and consists of the perception（感知）of sound. Listening, the second part, involves an attachment of meaning to the symbols perceived. Passive listening occurs when the receiver has little motivation to listen carefully, while active listening with a purpose is used to gain information, to determine how another person feels, and to understand others.

There are five key elements of active listening. These elements include paying attention, showing that you are listening providing feedback(反馈), delaying judgment, and responding appropriately.

A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy love(早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression(忧郁症). The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are worst of all.

As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven.
