第一节阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D中),选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

A

When I was in college, I spent a semester studying abroad at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. In my brief time there, I came to love Scotland for its local culture, food and scenery (景色).

You might think, ―Scotland isn’t so different from the US; they still speak English there!‖ But when I stepped off the plane, I was greeted by a gruff-voiced (声音粗哑的) lady at customs. ―You’ll be coming from America, then?‖ she asked me, and I nodded. ―But all of our lads (小伙子) are leaving Glasgow for the States!‖ Her thick Scottish English and sense of humor were obvious right away. I was not in the US anymore, where customs agents never joke around.

As I settled in at the university, I could feel myself getting used to hearing –and even speaking – the Scottish English of my customs agent. In classroom discussions, people would say ―em‖ when they couldn’t think of what to say instead of ―um‖. After t he first few weeks, I stopped chuckling (咯咯笑) about this. Strathclyde students stayed up late into the night, running around campus and shouting, ―Here weh, here weh, here weh [curse word] go! Lat’s go, lat’s go, lat’s go [curse word] Glasgow!‖ Pretty soon, I was no longer saying ―thanks‖ at the supermarket – instead, I said ―cheers‖.

My Scottish friends drank whiskey and ate haggis (羊杂碎布丁), a hearty dish made from sheep’s heart, liver and lungs. I drank plenty of whiskey but I’m ashamed to admit that I wasn’t brave enough to try haggis. Scottish bakeries usually sell bridies (肉馅饼), pies filled with salt and pepper, sliced onions, steak, butter and fat. Add a cup of tea – though I usually Americanized it by choosing coffee instead – and a bridie makes for a delicious breakfast.

Every time I took a train anywhere in Scotland, I’d gaze out at the rolling hills and wonder if grass was greener anywhere else in the world. Then I’d reflect that there’s a reason this country was the birthplace of golf.

Tevin Hudson was in no hurry to get behind the wheel of a car. In high school, he rode the bus and caught rides with friends or his mom.

Yet the 19-year-old is not so out of step with his peers. For a growing number of US teenag ers, obtaining a driver’s license is more of a financial burden (负担) than a ticket to freedom. For Hudson, postponing his driving test was worth the wait.

―It looks like teens just can’t afford to drive,‖ said Matt Moore, vice-president of the Highway Loss Data Institute. ―Paying for their own cars, gas and insurance (保险) is hard if they can’t find a job.‖

Some see those same financial forces combining with other shifts (改变) in youth culture, including the arrival of new ways to spend their limited funds (基金).

―Young folks would rather spend their money on an iPhone than a car,‖ said professor Bruce Stephenson at Rollins College. ―It’s a lot cheaper not to have a car.‖

Stephenson said the push for walkable communities, green transportation and the growing desire for urban (城市的) living could have teens tapping the brakes (刹车) on getting a license.

Another reason a car may matter less to the younger set is because teens can communicate easily with peers via social media.

―They have another way,‖ said Michele Harris, director of traffic safety culture at AAA Auto Club South in Tampa, Florida. ―Before, you needed that car to be with your friends.‖

35. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?

A. The widespread use of the Internet.

B. Economic factors, such as the price of fuel.

C. The increasing difficulty of getting a driver’s license.

D. Teenagers’ growing awareness of how to use green means of transport.

38. What can we conclude from the article?

A. In the past two decades, the number of US teen drivers has decreased by 12%.

B. American teenagers are less connected with each other than they used to be.

C. For an increasing number of US teenagers, a smartphone is more appealing than a car.

D. The decrease of the overall population in the US is one of the reasons the number of teenage drivers has dropped.

Today we eat on the go, at our desks and even in front of computers. We eat take-out, delivered and packaged meals. Why is that? It seems that we have adapted our foods to our fast-paced lives.

―Over the past three decades, people have started eating out more than ever before and purchasing more prepared foods at the grocery store (食品杂货店), which tend to contain more fat, salt and sugar than their homemade equivalents (对应物),‖ noted US healthy living website SparkPeople.

So, the Slow Food Movement has arisen to counteract this fast food trend. It encourages us to

value the time we spend preparing, sharing and consuming (吃) food, as a recent USA Today article put it.

It all started in 1986 with the efforts of Slow Food’s founding father, Italian activist Carlo Petrini, who wanted to revitalize (使复兴) food varieties and flavors that had gone dark in the face of industrialization. At that time, he asked people to follow a more sustainable (可持续的) living model. Now, his ideas are almost completely mainstream (主流的).

Starting at the table, the movement promotes an unhurried way of life founded on the idea that everyone has a right to culinary (烹饪的) pleasure, but that everyone must also take responsibility to ―protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that make this celebration of the senses possible‖, wrote The Phnom Penh Post.

―Slow food doesn’t necessar ily mean food that takes a long time to cook. It means turning down the speed at which we eat and increasing the amount of time we spend dining together with other people,‖ Althea Zanecosky, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, told The Huffington Post.

―It is a way to bring back the social togetherness of yesterday. Dinner table conversations keep families together,‖ noted the Belgian non-profit organization Greenfudge.

39. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?

A. To advise readers to eat at home instead of outside.

B. To tell the story of Slow Food’s founding father.

C. To introduce the Slow Food Movement.

D. To analyze what led to the fast food trend.

40. The underlined word ―counteract‖ in the third paragraph probably mea ns ______.

A. make up for

B. work against

C. compete with

D. catch up with

41. Why did Carlo Petrini start the Slow Food Movement?

A. He wanted to make people aware of the benefits of eating slowly.

B. He was worried about the negative effects of industrialization on food culture.

C. He thought people should value the time that families and friends spend dining together.

D. He believed the development of industry might help revitalize food varieties and flavors.

42. According to the article, which of the following would Althea Zanecosky be likely to agree with?

A. Generally, fast food is not as healthy and delicious as slow food.

B. We had better not have small talk when we’re eating dinner with other people.

C. It’s not only the food itself but also the tim e we spend dining together that matters.

D. The Slow Food Movement is based on the idea that we should spend as much time as possible on cooking.

Are you a dog person or a cat person?

With so many photos and videos of cats and dogs doing cute things online, it’s easier than ever to answer which of these furry friends you like more. There are many reasons why people prefer one type of pet over the other. So, have you ever wondered what your preference for cats or dogs says about you?

In fact, a 2010 study done by Sam Gosling, a psychologist at the University of Texas, US, and his graduate student Carson Sandy found that dog people are more extroverted (外向的), agreeable and conscientious (认真的) than cat people.

―Cats will occasionally engage in soci al activities, but usually after only a few minutes they will abandon the game. Dogs, on the other hand, will often engage in play, like fetching a thrown ball, for hours at a time,‖ said Modern Dog magazine.

Just on the basis of dogs’ nature being more sociable than cats’, you may expect that the

personalities of dog people also reflect higher sociability. And Gosling’s study found that dog people are generally about 15 percent more extroverted and 13 percent more agreeable, both of which are linked with social orientation (态度).

In addition, dog people are 11 percent more conscientious than cat people. ―Conscientiousness‖ is a tendency (趋势) to show self-discipline (自律), to complete tasks and aim for achievement. This trait (特点) also shows a preference for planned rather than spontaneous (一时冲动的) behavior.

In comparison, cat people are about 12 percent more anxious, but they are also 11 percent more ―open‖ than dog people, due to a general appreciation for art, emotion, imagination, curiosity, adventure, unusual ideas and variety of experience. And people high on openness are more likely to hold unconventional (非传统的) beliefs.

Despite vast differences, there are some things that cat people and dog people have in common. ―Both types of people cons ider themselves close to nature, dislike animal-print clothing and are generally optimists,‖ noted Mother Nature Network.

43. What does the article mainly talk about?

A. Differences between dogs and cats in their personality traits.

B. Factors that influen ce people’s preference for dogs or cats.

C. How raising a pet helps shape your personality.

D. What your preference for dogs or cats tells about you.

45. According to the study done by Sam Gosling, dog owners tend to ______ than cat owners.

A. be more imaginative and creative

B. live a more organized life

C. love to get close to nature more

D. be more easygoing and adventurous

46. According to the article, both dog people and cat people ______.

A. are generally self-disciplined

B. are usually positive and care about nature

C. are likely to hold unconventional beliefs

D. like to wear animal-print clothing

Everyone has heard of the American Dream, which for many means having a big house, an expensive car and a job with a high salary. But a survey has revealed that attitudes toward success in the US are changing and material possessions are less important than before.

A survey published in May by American Express, a US financial services company, found that those surveyed ―define (定义) success by wha t they do more than by what they have‖. Health, a good relationship and an enjoyable job, rather than a well-paid one, featured among the top five contributors to personal success.

Of the nearly 2,200 US adults who were surveyed, 61 percent said they d efine other people’s success by their happiness levels, not their income (27 percent). Only 33 percent consider money to be the key to a successful life.

From difficulty to happiness

According to The Huffington Post, the US’ financial crisis (危机) and high jobless rate played an important role in changing attitudes toward success. Although many suffered from financial problems, the experience also helped them to realize what is important in their life.

Glen Pizzolorusso, a US citizen, is one of them. In 2007, when he was 29, Pizzolorusso was earning $100,000 (605,112 yuan) a month and owned several houses and cars, including a Porsche

911. When the financial crisis hit in 2009, he lost everything.

But instead of feeling broken, Pizzolorus so found happiness. ―I began to realize the things I had been so naive (天真的) to overlook: my children, my health and some of the greatest friends on the planet. And the best part of it was this was all free,‖ he told the NPR.

This realization led Pizzolorusso to change his definition of success. ―I was actually ashamed I had earned so much money and the only thing I had to show for it was a handful of pictures. I hadn’t helped anyone but myself. I could have done so many positive things with the money I earned, but I failed to.‖

Give and you will receive

In a study published in May, two professors from Harvard University in the US argue that it is possible to buy happiness – if you spend money on life experiences and other people.

―Even something small, like going out for a meal or little shifts (改变) in how you spend $5 or $10 can bring happiness to people. Because experiences are more emotionally involving than simply buying stuff,‖ Michael Norton, one of the professors, told Boston magazine.

―Money matters, but social experiences and that fee ling that you maybe had an impact on someone’s life –these are things that are helpful for your overall being,‖ he said. ―Experiences get [better] in our memories over time. Every time we think back, those memories get better and better and better.‖

US on right path

The survey results from American Express support that. They show that 72 percent of US adults would rather spend money on experiences than things. Of those who consider themselves to be successful, 66 percent said they make a difference in other people’s lives and 56 percent give back to society.

47. Which of the following is now considered more important as a sign of personal success?

A. Having a high social status.

B. Being able to spend money on others.

C. Having a happy family.

D. Having all kinds of experiences.

48. What has changed American people’s attitudes toward success, according to The Huffington Post?

A. The trend of returning to family.

B. Public campaigns asking people to spend on others.

C. The economic crisis and unemployment rate.

D. Personal financial failures and other setbacks in life.

49. Why is happiness something that you can buy according to the article?

A. Because people feel good when they spend money on others.

B. Because spending more on experiences often leads to changes in your attitude toward life.

C. Because the feeling of having an impact on others will makes people reflect on what they overlook in life.

D. Because spending money on others improves your social relationships.

50. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Most American people consider money to be the key to a successful life.

B. Many American people have begun to value time with children and friends.

C. About 72 percent of American people prefer life with less money.

D. 66 percent of those who consider themselves successful give back to society.

第三部分写作

第一节阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读下面的短文并用英语回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is _______ the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time – about eight hours after you wake up – your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.

In many parts of the world, people take naps(小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional , people often suffer less from problem such as heart disease.

Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a

short nap – even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
