Harry Potter

I'm sure many of you know Harry Potter books! I have read them many times since primary school. I really get lost in the stories. These days I' m reading them again in Germany.

2.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

The Vine That Ate the South

Kudzu is a fast-growing vine (蔓生植物)that covers a large area in the southern United States. It is so common that one might think it is a native plant, but it is not. Kudzu was brought to the United States from Japan in 1876. Many Americans thought it was beautiful, and they began to plant it. They didn't know it could grow up to a foot a day during the summer months. Nor did they know it would grow up and over anything in its path (路径).

In Japan, kudzu experienced cold winters and a short growing season. But in the United States, it has a very long growing season with warm and wet southern weather. It is fine weather for the vine to grow fast.

In the 1920s, people used the vine to feed farm animals. Ten years later, the government supported to plant kudzu because it kept soil (土壤)from washing away. However, by the 1950s, the government no longer wanted people to plant the vine. Twenty years after that, the government said it was a harmful plant.

The vine grows up trees and buildings, making some beautiful shapes. However, trees die after kudzu covers them because they cannot get enough light. Scientists are looking for ways to kill the vine. They used poisons (毒药)to kill the vine. However, some of the poisons made it grow even better. Scientists also find it difficult to dig up Kudzu. The plant is really tough.

Because kudzu is so hard to kill, some people are making the best of it. So they try to find different uses for the vine. They find the vine can be used to make paper and baskets, it can be used to feed the goats, and it can even be eaten by people. Scientists are studying it in the hope that the vine can be used as a medicine. At the very least, kudzu serves as an example of the unexpected results that can come from non-native plants.

(1)We can learn from the passage that ________.

A. kudzu mostly grows in the northern America

B. how people use the vine

C. why people want to kill the vine

(4)The writer uses the title "The Vine That Ate the South" most probably to ________.

6.阅读理解

Not every dog is right for children and not every child is right for a dog. Most dog or child problems I meet involve children under six years old. If your children are under six, you should invest a great deal of time and thoughts before choosing a new dog. Large guard dogs or dogs which have a history of being aggressive(好斗的) or biting should be avoided. Large and high-energy dogs that can knock children over would not be good choices either. Instead, parents should consider the little gentle dogs.

Parents with little children are usually very busy. They often do not have free time or desire to spend hours cleaning or walking a dog. In fact, a dog requires almost as much time as a child does. So ask yourself if you are ready to keep a dog when you are already very busy. As a veterinarian, many of the problems I meet are caused by the excuses like "the dog would be good for the kids" or "the children begged for one", but the parents do not really want a dog. If the parents cannot completely care for or train the dog, then I usually stop them from keeping a dog, otherwise it is not fair to the dog.

(1)According to the writer, most dog or child problems happen to children who are .

A. under 6 years old

B. from 6 to 8 years old

C. under 10 years old

D. over 12 years old (2)Which kind of dog might be suitable for children under 6?

A. Large guard dogs.

B. Large and high-energy dogs.

C. Large aggressive dogs.

D. Little gentle dogs.

(3)From the passage, we can know that the writer is a(n) .

A. reporter

B. animal doctor

C. expert

D. teacher

(4)The writer thinks that it is unfair if .

A. parents don't raise a dog for their children

B. children are not allowed to walk the dog

C. a mother with young kids needs to walk the dog

D. parents keep a pet dog but don't care for it well

Have you ever wondered what kind of music young people across the United States are

listening to? Are they crazy about Britney Spears? Do they love the Backstreet Boys? Or do they dance with Eminem?

Well, nearly 6,000 teens have taken part in a Teen & Music survey, made by the USA Weekend Magazine last autumn. And the result showed what type of music was hot and what was not.

It comes without surprise that hip-hop and rap are the most popular types of music among American teenagers. They began in the mid-1970s with young black kids in New York, taking music onto the streets. Hip -hop and rap are well-known for the break-dancing that goes with them.

The word "rap" comes from a slang word. It is a rapid rhyme that is spoken rather than sung.

Pop music, such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, has always met the tastes of the general public. It continues to enjoy support from teens and is the second most popular music after hip-hop and rap.

The third is rock music with exciting dance beats and simple lyrics that speak loudly of social problems. The melodies are led by electric guitars. Rock became popular in the USA in the early 1950s. The American singer Elvis Presley and British group the Beatles became world famous rock artists.

The survey also shows that jazz is least loved by American teens. It developed in the later part of the 19th century from a mixture of African songs and hymns. Jazz tends to be the type of music that people enjoy more as they get older.

A woman was next to him, shouting for help. The bus driver, 24-year-old Wang Ping, stopped the bus without thinking twice. He got off and asked the woman what happened. She said that the man had a heart problem and should go to the hospital. Mr. Wang knew he had to act quickly. He told the passengers that he must take the man to the hospital. He expected most or all of the passengers to get off and wait for the next bus. But to his surprise, they all agreed to go with him. Some passengers helped Mr. Wang to move the man ona the bus. Thanks to Mr. Wang and the passengers, the doctors saved the man in time. "It's sad that many people don't want to help others because they don’t want any trouble," says one passenger. "But the driver didn't think about himself. He only thought about saving a life." P6 2b He Lost His ArmBut Is Still Climbing Aron Ralston is an American man who is interested in mountain climbing. As a mountain climber, Aron is used to taking risks. This is one of the exciting things about doing dangerous sports. There were many times when Aron almost lost his life because of accidents. On April 26, 2003, he found himself in a very dangerous situation when climbing in Utah On that day, Aron's arm was caught under a 2,000-kilo rock that fell on him when he was climbing by himself in the mountains. Because he could not free his arm, he stayed there for five days and hoped that someone would find him. But when his water ran out, he knew that he would have to do something to save his own life. He was not ready to die that day. So he used his knife to cut off half his right arm. Then, with his left arm, he bandaged himself so that he would not lose too much blood. After that, he climbed down the mountain to find help. After losing his arm, he wrote a book called Between a Rock and a Hard Place. This means being in a difficult situation that you cannot seem to get out of. In this book, Aron tells of the importance of making good decisions, and of being in control of one's life. His lose for mountain climbing is so great that he kept on climbing mountains even after this experience. Do we have the same spirit as Aron? Let's think about it before we find ourselves “between a rock and a hard place”, and before we have to make a decision that could mean life or death. Unit 2 I'll help to clean up the city parks
