A group of homeless children in the Indian capital of New Delhi publish(出版) a newspaper telling about their own lives. It is called Balaknama, which means “children’s voice”.

The newspaper is written and edited by children up to 19 years old. About 10,000 people read it. The children write about poverty, child labor, underage marriages and drugs. When reports arrive, they sit down to select（挑选）the story, and fights usually break out. They argue: this story will have more effect than that story. So there are a lot of debates before the final selection goes to print.

The newspaper has 70 reporters in several states and 14 in the capital. All of the reporters, editors and managers are homeless children. Many of their parents are jobless and cannot read or write. The children now earn money, and many of them have classes online.

The newspaper is published every month. It has eight pages. In 2002, when it began operations, the newspaper was published four times a year. It has changed the lives of many of the children who publish it, and hopes to improve the lives of thousands of others.

Non-governmental organizations and charity groups support the newspaper. Sanjay Gupta leads a group that helps the children and gives money to the newspaper. “They feel very encouraged when people think highly of them. When they talk to the officials and before the media, they gradually build up their self-confidence. I think Balaknama is a powerful tool for them. The newspaper costs about three cents. That is lower than the price of a small cup of tea in India. But the low cost gives the children hope that they will someday have a home and a job.”

How far would you be willing to go to satisfy your need to know? Far enough to find out your possibility of dying from a terrible disease? These days that’s more than an academic question, as Tracy Smith reported in our Cover Story.

There are now more than a thousand genetic（基因的）tests, for everything from baldness to breast cancer, and the list is growing. Question is, do you really want to know what might finally kill you? For example, Nobel Prize winning scientist James Watson, one of the first people to map their entire genetic make-up, is said to have asked not to be told if he were at a higher risk for Alzheimer’s（老年痴呆症）.

“If I tell you that you have an increasing risk of getting a terrible disease, that could weigh on your mind and make you worried, through which you see the rest of your life as you wait for that disease to hit you. It could really mess you up,” said Dr. Robert Green, a Harvard geneticist.

“Every ache and pain,”Smith suggested, “could be understood as‘the beginning of the end’” “That’s right. If you ever worried you were at risk for Alzheimer’s disease, then every time you can’t find your car in the parking lot, you think the disease has started.”

Dr. Green has been thinking about this problem for years. He led a study of people who wanted to know if they were at a higher genetic risk for Alzheimer’s. It was thought that people who got bad news would, for short of a better medical term, freak out. But Green and his team found that there was “no important difference”between how people dealt with good news and possibly the worst news of their lives. In fact, most people think they can deal with it. People who ask for the information usually can deal with the information, good or bad, said Green.
