The South Pole is at the bottom of the world. During its winter, the sun never rises. The men had to face the darkness of a six-month night, as well as the world’s worst weather.

The men lived in a group of building joined together by tunnels. They were cut off from the rest of the world. During the long winter, they could not be reached even by plane.

The men depended on one another for company. They also shared certain tasks. Everyone took turns working in the “snow mine”. This was a giant cave dug into the ice beneath their camp. There, they dug out clean snow needed as a water supply.

The word “word” is known and used by millions of people all over the world. Still, language experts have different ideas of where it came from.

Some say it came from the Native Americans, or Indians. When European first came to America they heard hundreds of different Indian languages. Many were well developed. One tribe(部落) especially had a well developed language. People in this tribe were farmers and fishermen. When there were problems, the leader of the tribe listened to different opinions and said “Okeh”, meaning “It is so”

The Indian language has given many words to English. Twenty-four of the American states, almost half have Indian names—Oklahoma, Ohio and Tennessee, to name a few. And the names of many American and Canadian rivers, mountains, cities and towns are Indian.

However, there are many who do not agree that “okay” came from the Indians Some say that President Andrew Jackson first used the word “okay”. Others say the word came from John Jacob, a businessman of the late 1700’s who became one of the world’s richest men. Still others say a poor railroad clerk made up this word. His name was Obadiah Kelly and he signed O. K. on each package people gave him to ship by train.

So it goes; each story sounds reasonable and official. But perhaps the most believable story is that the word “okay” was invented by a political organization in the early 1800’s.

Martin Van Buren was running for President. A group of people set up an organization to support him They called their political organization the “Okay Club”. The letter “O” and “K” were taken from the name of Van Buren’s hometown Old Kinderhook, New York, the place where he was born.

There is one thing about “Okay” that the experts do agree on; that the word is American and that it has spread to almost every country on earth.

However, the word “okay” is used mostly in speech, not in serious writing. In serious writing people

would rather use “I agree”, or other words or phrases suiting the occasion.

Advertising gives useful information about which products to buy. But modern advertising does more than gives news about products and services. Have you ever seen people dance? Some dances are fast and others are slow. People’s feet always more when they dance. They keep on moving until the music stops.

People have enjoyed dancing for a very long time. This story is of a different kind of dance. It is the dance of bees(蜜蜂).

If you have ever watched bees, you know that they are very clever. They also work hard looking for food and bringing it back to their home.

The home of the bees is called a bee hive. Here hundreds even thousands of bees live. They work day and night building small walls of wax. There they make their honey. This is the same honey that we eat. Where does the honey come from? Bees live on food from flowers. Have you seen bees flying around a flower garden? When a bee rests on a flower, it tries to go to the center of it. There it takes in as much food as its body can hold. Then it flies to take the food back to the hive.

At the hive, bees change this flower food into honey. Then they fly away for more food.

How do the bees know where to find the best food in the sweetest flowers? One bee acts as a guide. When it discovers good flowers, it flies back to the hive and tells the others. It does this by dancing for them.

The bee dances on one side. This tells the other bees which way to go to find the flowers. But that is not all. The be dances for some time. And the length of its dace tells the other bees how far they must fly to reach the flowers.
